Claire Wineland - Clairity In Medicine It's Just A Disease - EEM LA 2018

We were honored to have Claire Wineland speak to a collection of doctors and other clinicians at our studio for an Essentials of EM event in 2018. We were truly saddened to hear of her passing but remain deeply inspired by her life and what she can teach us about medicine and humanity. We’re posting this here in memoriam of Claire and our thoughts go out to her family and friends. Starting around the 20m mark there are some great lessons for us medical professionals. If you already know her story you can check that out first.

she is the only person who has ever made me change my mind about the way i see something. she did not live a short life, her life and wisdom were concentrated in a shorter period of time. we got the essence of it and she would have been proud of her message getting so wildely spread among the internet right at this moment. she did more than she could've imagined.

Hopefully this will also help change the western worlds perspective on like she stated "viewing patients with pity", but also those of us with mental illnesses (bipolar with me personally" and addiction still to this present day being shamed and casted out of society... Especially during this epidemic of fentynal being snuck in literally anything possibly (im so lucky to be living in the pacific northwest which has the first steps towards a better future for our culture being scammed with the lie of just the war on drugs altogether and besides South of cali up towards Washington with Oregon in-between already with over a decade of harm reduction, needle exchange/testing for stds, and last decade Washington implemented programs seeking help instead of incarceration for known addicts homeless by police I believe... but Oregon this year began it with a huge milestone achievement by voting in measure 110 with the almost decriminalization of all drugs being lowered to only a ticket at certain amounts to encourage help instead of punishment thru incarceration and surprisingly voted 109 to allow for the study of psilocybin microdosed on ptsd (mostly used veterans as the way to gain public support because of the stigma and false beliefs around truama let alone psychology by even what is considered to be on the western side of America to be more "progressive/modern" yet its still got so much more to catch up with modern science and understanding that other countries have been successful with how they implemented it for awhile now. R.I.P. Claire Wineland Thank you for helping more of us in ways that all of us dealing with health issues need to continue to fight for the progress and change you and I along with others believe in so whole heartedly

It’s kinda like her life’s purpose was to do exactly what she did, make people appreciate their lives much more and realize that family is what is important! It’s so sad that not everyone is able to live a normal healthy life however this woman made her mark on this earth! Her speech’s will live on for many many years on this earth and continue to help people and not just sick people but Healthy people that just need to hear this stuff to make them appreciate that they have their health and they have everything they need to be happy they have NOTHING to be mad or sad about!

My mom used to say 'If you have your health, you have everything.' I've heard it many times in various places and I bought it. Sure health is the most important thing in life. To the point that I convinced myself that people who are very ill have no quality of life. That if you can't live the life you want to live and have and are missing or have lost....then you need to reconsider life as a viable option. Claire cuts right through a very basic assumption that there's an ideal quality of life out there waiting for us if only we were focussing on it, early enough. Her point is to simply LIVE no matter the conditions you find yourself with. It's not the collective pre/proscribed push to achieve QOL that is going to make us happy. Don't make your life going after those factors to individually 'improve' QOL quotients....rather fully BE in a state of participation with each moment and opportunity to shine. Don't let the tail wag the dog.

In a similar vein to what Claire is talking about, I've heard the best palliative care docs are the ones who ask patients what is important to them, & what they would like to do with the time they have left, rather than the ones that push hard to extend life. Quality over quantity. Always involve the patient in their own care, & tailor the treatment where you can, to help them achieve their personal goals.

Yes Claire, I do love you. FOREVER. I don’t live to be ill and I don’t have even a comfort to have time to look after myself. I am to huge extent bed bound yet I run entire house and all the most difficult matters from bed, nothing is spared to me ever, and I often have to drag my a$$ to do things around, I don’t even know how I do it. It’s not about being ill and existing to treat the illness/yourself. I don’t even know how it would feel like, as I said, I don’t have comfort of “being ill”, having people to look after me. I get some help but not that I lie on the pile of pillows and get pampered. I don’t think that’s really applies to that many who suffer serious diseases, I won’t call it terminal, as life is a terminal condition anyway. You were great while here physically and you continue to live through your message. Be ok and happy wherever you are now. Hope to meet you one day somewhere out there in the universal sphere. Funny enough, very healthy people live mostly to maintain their health and that’s their life purpose, that would bore me to death!

“In the end it might just be the fight for my health that will end up ki*ling me” I have to feel bad for her, whether she wants me to or not; she put off her transplant for SO long. She finally decided to go for it, and then boom, that was it. She was gone :( I miss her. Never met her, never knew her, but I felt like I lost a sibling or best friend when I heard she had passed.

"I miss her. Never met her, never knew her, but I felt like I lost a sibling or best friend when I heard she had passed" I feel the same feeling it's kinda wierd right? but remember my friend, if she hadn't fought for her health she would have died before and the worst thing about this story is a new medicine was launched 2 years after her death that increases the life expectancy of cystic fibrosis pantients in about 30 to 40 years so she and others CF pantients could have a new life. I still feel sad for her, but her smile was so beautiful that I think thats the part we should keep in our hearts for me the most beautiful smile I ever seen she was a golden girl anyway all the best for you my friend
