Civilization 6 Hit 100K Players For The 'First Time' Because Of Civ 7

Ойындар

Besides the launch, Civ 6 has never had 100,000 concurrent players on Steam and Civ 5 never hit that number. For the first time since launch, Civilization VI crossed 100K because of the Civ 7 announcement. I wanted to look back at how things were in preparation for what's to come. @@Fastwinstondoom It's hard to get exact stats. Rough sales estimates puts Civ 4 at 3 million sales and Civ 5 at 8 million, but as you say piracy and 2nd hand discs etc would leave out a lot of players. That's why the polls from 2016 asked people what their first Civ game was. It focused more on when people got the game and played it, not when (if) they bought it. We couldn't just pull up Steam stats in 2016 because they wouldn't mean much. 50% said they started with Civ 5 and this is before Civ 6 released, so that wasn't an option. This was multiple polls, across multiple communities, with varying sample sizes ranging from a few hundred votes to many thousands. They all floated around half starting with Civ 5. Based on every indicator, Civ 5 doubled the Civ playerbase if not more. It being released on Steam is likely a big factor for that because of ease and accessibility. Similar to how Civ 6 increased it's playerbase significantly by releasing on consoles and the Switch. A lot of people who couldn't or couldn't be bothered to get Civ before could now just get it. Like my friend who is exclusively a Nintendo gamer. Never played a Civ game before until Civ 6 came to the Switch. Also keep in mind Civ 5 was like all other Civ games, it didn't blow up until over 2 years and 2 expansions after release. 2010-2012 was when Steam blew up, I remember I bought a Skyrim disc in 2011 and it just installed a Steam copy. Steam was becoming mandatory and Civ 5 blew up in 2013, right when everyone had been jumping onto Steam.

I started with Civ 4 and what I've consistently noticed with new Civ releases which probably also sours the taste for a lot of people playing their second civ installment is the fact that without fail the base game of the new installment feels like a step back from the previous installment with its expansions. I picked up Civ 5 pretty early and only started playing it a fair amount after Brave New World was released, when it actually started to feel like an improvement over Civ 4. For Civ 6 I waited until I could get the base game bundled with the first two expansions and it just felt like buying a worthwhile base game at that point, which was very enjoyable. Will probably be doing the same for Civ 7.

I was there, 2500 years ago, when the switch from 3 to 4 was happening, and it was not pretty, not at all. New engine, bad performance on older hardware, new rulesets, "bubbly" graphics, axing of the old editor... civfanatics forum was on fire for couple of weeks :) I think you're right. These games are meant to be played for a really long time and people get used to "their way" and any deviation from that is a sin. Also, if they just reskined the older version ( same rules new graphics ) they would be rightfully be called out. Also a fully complete older game with expansion packs, mods etc has a higher value by default but its always nice to try something new in a Civ game. Certanly, if I look jump from 3 to 6 is a massive one and I for one am looking forward to new one ( although I still like to fire up teturkhan world map with 60ish players and go wild in 3)

I never had an issue with the art style of Civ. 6. I prefer a more artistic approach rather than realistic approach to graphics, because 9/10 times artistic styles tend to look less dated in the future than realistic styles do (at least in my opinion that seems to be the case). My issues with Civ. 6 really come from being a casual gamer, who enjoys gaming, but I really only have about four to six hours a week that I can dedicate to gaming. It felt like too much having to plan districts and not have automated workers (I really miss having automated works going about my Civ making improvements by themselves). It felt like too much for me. I really love the game as a whole, I just don’t have the time to really dedicate to understanding the game, and sticking to learning the strategy required for Civ. 6. I’m hoping automated works return in Civ. 7.

Civ 6 has gone on 90% sale 15 times since 2022 and the latest discount was because of civ 7. People are jumping on the sale this time more than before because of Civ 7. But also the whole graph is about players not sales. You can see the launch numbers and how it tanked immediately, sales don't equal players. Civ 7's teaser trailer was published on the 7th of June with the Civ 6 sale and it's normal marketing to give a big sale when you announce the sequel because the last game becomes part of marketing. Civ 6 is still regularly crossing 80K concurrent players, and again, remember this is just Steam we don't have console numbers, of which Civ 5 has zero.

There's something about 2D/ isometric graphics that lends itself to these types of historic / strategy/ god games. It feels more like you're opening an old time map and you're living in the middle ages/ renaissance. Civ3 was my first, maybe this has something to do with it of course. Civ 6 is Civ 5 with the district expansion. They're the same game to me. Visuals are different but I like them both equally. Civ 7 is coming to Nintendo Switch. That to me says a lot about what to expect. It's not an ambitious game technically. They're going for widest audience possible. I was hoping they would do a major departure from abstract turns and tiles and board game roots, similar to what the XCOM team did with Midnight Suns. I'm sure I'll buy it no matter what it is, but it is a bummer they set Switch as the baseline platform. Switch 2 will probably be out when Civ 7 launches. Civ 6 isn't going to disappear when Civ 7 launches. Nor will Civ 5.

The ai seriously slow down in every aspects once you reach industry era. Civ 5's ai at least could maintain some strong armies until modern era, the vox populi mod made decent ai at handling military units' movement and diplomacy, while Civ 6 ai code is not released and thus cannot be fixed by the community.

the animations and graphics in civ 6 are ugly at best. I use mods to make it more like civ 5. I played Civ 6 since release, it was, just as civ 5 and 4 utterly broken at release. Civ 6 was more or less fixed when first expansion was released. Then I started to play civ 6 more thhan civ 5. Civ 6 is a good game.

I'd argue Civ 6 is the most played because of the graphics and especially due to gaming being much more mainstream nowadays. Player numbers certainly don't reflect the quality of a game. But as long as people have fun, who cares. I'm personally hoping for a more realistic Civ 7.

Completely agree, Civ6 got hella unwarranted hate from some very angry dorks that just wanna be "the best" at "the meta" but don't care for the wider experience if the game. Or at least, it sure feels that way sometimes how vile some of the haters get over something that is not that serious. Also, Civ has *ALWAYS* had a somewhat cartoon aspect to it, or at the very least has since Civ3 so I think a lotta punks wanna act tough lol

Civ6s gameplay is the best in the series, it's really only rivaled in my mind by Civ4 and Alpha Centauri - and Civ4 vanilla is not as good it's only modding that takes Civ4 to be the best overall civ game still in my mind. Like, Civ5 is good, it has some solid mods, but Civ6 is just everything it did and more

I like Civ 6, I actually love it, but we have to agree that the AI doesn’t pose any challenge at all. Even at deity the game is too easy and therefore it gets easily boring. The future is either a very good AI (and we might get there soon) or multiplayer. But if we want ro have an enjoyable multiplayer experience I think the developers should reinvent the mechanics of the game

I mean based on the graph you were showing civ 5 had more players than civ 6 for 2 whole years after civ 6 release date. I think that says everything you need to know. Civ 5 is an old game, there's no server to host games, people have to host their game and they play with different modes so they can't play together. And when they do play together the experience is unstable, ppl getting disconnected or losing sync. Vanilla game is very unbalanced today and it's the reason there's not a lot of players today, not everyone knows about the mods such as LEK mod that brings a new experience. However the game itself is still better than civ 6 And you can't take the statistics your mentioning as facts, the pool size is small, it's obvious more than 25% of players hates on graphics of civ 6. I tried countless time playing civ 6, i think they made some nice new concepts, gameplay wise it brings something new. However i couldn't finish a single game because the graphics are just terrible. How can you make a game 7 years later and have worse graphics. Civ 5 is old but it looks like a serious game. The cartoonish graph of civ 6 makes it look like everything is a joke, for kids and that's my biggest problem. I personally just hate that style not just in civ 6 but across the whole gaming industry

Yes I say the 2 years thing in the video. And we don't have the numbers for Civ 4, but it took 2 years for Civ 5 to really take off as well and it's likely Civ 4 stayed more popular. The exact same thing will happen with Civ 7, taking 2 years before it overtakes Civ 6. This is standard for the Civ series. I'm also not commenting on the quality of the games here at all besides me mentioning that many still consider Civ 4 to be the best. This is just about popularity. And more than 25% of players hate the graphics of Civ 6? Where are you getting that from? I ran polls, Civ Fanatics ran polls, there were polls on the 2K forums, and a giant Google Docs survey back in the day. None of them showed more than 25% of people hating the new style. If I can't take multiple polls with thousands of votes on multiple platforms as reasonable data, how can you just say "more than 25%" with zero data at all? It's not obvious at all and every piece of evidence points to the opposite. You can personally hate the style, I say that's fine, but don't make up numbers.

Look at Civ 5's numbers: steamdb.info/app/8930/charts/#max Launched with 70K concurrent players then tanked to around 25K for 2 years. Only really picked up in July 2013. Does that say everything we need to know about Civ 5? Of course not.

@@GamerZakh all those polls are still small sample. Majority of ppl who didn't like the game do not go out finding polls to vote, they just don't ignore the game completely. There's a lot more players that liked the game that participated in those polls than those who didn't like the game and will waste time finding some polls of a game they didn't like. And if you like numbers that much, 96% positive reviews civ 5 vs 86% civ 6.

A ton of people hate the Gathering Storm climate mechanic. There's plenty of reasons to hate Civ 6, don't make up numbers is all I ask. You can't say my sample size is too small when yours is zero.

IT SAYS A LOT ABOUT A GAME LIKE CIV 5 XD, Great game that some skkiped in those times and now that they knew civ6 the believe its the best shit they can play among 4x games? Civ 6 was never free on Steam and none of the Epic players are counted here. Civ 5 has also been on massive sales repeatedly. If you want to talk about reality, stick to reality. Epic, Playstation, Xbox, and Switch players are not counted in the Steam graph. And you can compare Steam reviews sure. Civ 5 is 96% while Civ 6 is 86%. I never said Civ 6 is better than Civ 5. But also, everyone who brings up the review score never mentions the number of reviews. Civ 5 has 120K user reviews while Civ 6 has almost doubled at 230K reviews. 110,000 more user reviews is a much larger sample size. Plus, Civ 4 continued to compete with Civ 5 just the same as Civ 5 competes with Civ 6. Many still say Civ 4 is better than Civ 5. And Civ 6 will continue to compete with Civ 7. None of this says anything about the quality of any of the games. When Civ 6 keeps more players than Civ 7 for 2 years after release and continues to compete with it until 2030, will you say Civ 6 is a good game? No, right? That's just popularity, not quality. Don't use reasonings for Civ 5 that you won't use for Civ 6. People also said Civ 5 sucked until all the DLC and expansions.

I'm just trying to be neutral and sticking to facts, but a lot of people hate me for that haha. It's totally okay and valid to not like Civ 6. There's lots that makes sense to dislike. Just keep in mind the formula for Civ is always the same. Ever since Civ 3. The game will release, it will be missing features from the last game. For the first 2-3 years, the previous game will be more popular while the new game gets 2 expansions. Then when the 2nd expansion releases, people will consider it 'good' and it becomes the most popular. It was like that for Civ 3, 4, 5, and 6. Civ 7 will do the exact same thing. fun video. especially the complaining about the complainers :P I think for me civ6 was too cartoony and the mechanics felt too "exact" (like you HAVE to build a settler at this and this turn, your academy HAS to be on this and this tile etc...) to really get into. I just want to build a civ. I started with civ3, and it remains mostly my favorite. I'm hoping for a more globalized civ game with a lot of automatic flow of things (like trade, I really liked the trade units introduced in civ5) and less microing particular tiles.Oh and amazing photorealism :P but that's just me

Did they remove the unfun and stupid mechanic of climate change in Civ VI? I've been extremely annoyed about the final stage where it's basically just a sudden death by RNG. Also the number of DLC is yet another argument against Civ VI. Civ VI is still the only civ I haven't bought and only tested it a bit, but it's boring and annoying. It kind of made me go back to Civ IV actually. IV and V are very different games, and both are really good. Civ V seems extremely polished, to the point where it feels a bit generic (and the world feels extremely static), compared to Civ IV.

  • @GamerZakh

The climate change mechanic is part of the Gathering Storm expansion, when you create a game you select what version of the game you want to play. So if you pick 'Rise and Fall' or 'Standard Rules', then there's no climate change in the game. If you do pick Gathering Storm, you can also set Disaster Intensity to 0 where disasters have minimal effect.
