as a veteran of vietnam, I can understand what those solders were thinking and feeling when they were under fired! The smoke, shells, explosions, screaming and yelling, the dying and the dead all too real!

God bless you and thank you for your service sir! What was your unit and M.O.S.? Am 26 years old, and with respects look up to you guys that went over to Vietnam. You guys are an inspiration just as those whom served our nation during the war of the Rebellion.

I live in Maryland and commute into D.C. almost every day. Ft. Stevens sits at the intersection of Georgia Ave. and Missouri Ave. Tens of thousands pass this intersection everyday with no idea what happened there. Just north of the District line, on Georgia Ave is a small Episcopal Church. There's a plaque and about a dozen rebs, buried in the churchyard. It(the church) was their field hospital. I fish the mouth of the Monocacy all the time. Most people remember Lew Wallace for writing Ben Hur(if at all). What he did there was one of the most heroic feats of the war. What a well done flick. Thank you.

The battle of Monocacy, and Ft. Stevens were tiny insignificant battles. The Confederate attack by 10k troops was never an attempt to capture Washington DC. It was merely an attempt to cause fear and divert Union forces from Richmond and Petersburg. Of which it was a total, if only a weak, success. ( It diverted the Union 6th Corp to the defense of Washington. A Corp is approx 3 Divisions.) That's why it is recorded as a Confederate victory. Wallace was soundly defeated, and retreated to Baltimore. The Confederate delay was not caused by him.ike I said, the Confederate intent was never to capture DC. Early's force was only 10k and the Washington defenses were long, and well established. This was merely a feint to cause panic, and divert Union troops. For that reason, it was recorded in history as a Confederate victory.

@@unitedwestand5100 I agree that Early's thrust was a feint. However, if Wallace hadn't delayed him, and delay him he did, the 6th Corps wouldn't have been entrenched in the circle forts. Who knows what could have happened. Regardless, Lew Wallace facing up to Early's Corps with little more than a brigade was shear brass balls.

Some folks think of Lew Wallace as the general who intentionally got lost during the first day of Shiloh. He carried that misconception for the remainder of the war. Even though Wallace is considered to have lost the battle at Monocey he bought valuable time for Halleck and Stanton to assemble as many troops as they could to man the outlying forts. He also put some doubt into Early's plan to occupy Washington. In my opinion Lew Wallace was a brave and daring general who greatly contributed to Early returning to Virginia a little earlier than General Lee was counting on. Ha

Our family heirloom we have is a Springfield.58 that was my great,great grandfathers. It was fired in 2015 for the 150th anniversary of the end of the civil war. Still worked. It was very emotional for my grandfather when it was fired. A Federal civil war re-enactor fired it.

I love this type of show. It is obvious that the producers spent a lot of time and energy getting the wounds just right. Some of the battlefield injuries looked real! The beards and moustaches could do with a do-over - but that's just me nit picking. This was a really good production and I wish there were more like it.

A great Civil War film I had never heard about before. Good things are even better when they come unexpectedly...

For an independent film, this was outstanding.

The best movie so far after gettysburg they play their role well even without millions dollar budget green screen and fancy editing you still can feel the war thank to all of them who involve in this movie and make it happen

Thank you for this wonderful movie. The battles were packed full of the horror that these brave men on both sides had to endure. I only wish Hollywood could take the same care to produce something like this.

@Derrick Bridges I agree with you to a point. I should first let you know that I'm not an anti-Souther. My primary areas of study are Robert E. Lee and Jackson. The CSA had more equiptment than believed. The CSA lacked the capacy to get equiptment to their troops in the field. There was no standardized rail guage in the South. States were also reluctant to work together and supply states other than their own. After Petersburg Lee wasn't beaten by Grant, he was beaten by the lack of food. Instead of food he was sent ammunition. With more cooperation the troops could have faired better.

@@edwil111 It may shock you to hear that Gen. Thomas Jackson (Stonewall) had a meeting at the start of the war with Lee and Davis. Jackson Submitted the only way the South could win the war was to adopt a "Total War and Scorched Earth" policy in the North by tearing up rail tracks, burning towns and cities to the ground, taking crops and livestock and burning the rest. Jackson wanted to leave the North in ashes in a bid to turn public opinion against the Lincoln administration and the war. Lee and Davis were both horrified at Jackson's plan. Lee, because he wanted to fight a gentleman's war with honour. Davis because he thought Jackson was mad. Both men dismissed Jackson out of sight. Davis would never fully embrace Jackson after this and they had a strained relationship. (Gwynne Sam, Rebel Yell: 2014). No doubt, as a devout Christian Jackson was drawing on the Old Testament and the way the Children of Israel had purged the Promised Land. It was Lincoln, Grant and Sherman who adopted this Scorched earth policy in the end during Sherman's march to the sea. The South and especially the Southern border states were laid waste during the war. because most of the fighting took place there. Today, the ACW is portrayed in terms of good against bad, the end of Slavery and moral right vanquishing wrong. This war like any conflict cannot be reduced to absolutes. There is no black and white in war only shades of grey. The cause of the ACW and how it was fought is a lot more complicated.

I've seen parts of this years ago on the channel. I always wanted this, but I couldn't get one myself as a gift. I saw this on another channel called CivilWarFlix. It was great. Here I see it again. Makes it worth while.

​@John John Lincoln was the President... bud. I don't wanna sound like a dick but Lincoln didn't do that. He prosecuted a horribly bloody War that was fought by the Men in the Armies. The Men won the War, it is their Victory being their Sacrifice and all. Thinking on it right this very moment and in my opinion, in North America a Confederation could never defeat anyone with a Central Government. Unless by Miracle..... Example would obviously be the American Revolution. A bunch of separate Colonies going up against the British Empire. Congress was Locked up worse than our Government today. I'm rambling. Lincoln didn't take anyone from a farm and forcefully pushed them to factories. That's ridiculous. The South was Horrified When Lincoln was Assassinated.... He was to be far less severe on the South than what actually happened. Proof would be... Lincoln paroled all Southern Armies and let them go home. With Horses and sidearm's or whatever they needed to get South up and running. Instead Johnson came in and the Radical Republicans punished the South. Could you see Biden or Trump grabbing people from their homes and stuffing them in Factories? Fu#k no. Come on..... Don't be gullible, you are better than that. God gave us Brains for a reason...... To eat Pu%%y. :)

Monocacy finally gets the attention it deserves, with a production made with a lot of feeling. This film could have used a more professional level of sound management, but it's a good movie overall, without the usual level of histrionics.

A fine movie that struck me with the real sounds of battle without a music score. The actor who played Lincoln did a commendable recreation. No actor has come close to mirroring the look of Robert E. Lee as the actor who portrayed him in "NO RETREAT FROM DESTINY: THE BATTLE THAT RESCUED WASHINGTON." A really fine effort at capturing history. One of the best Civil War films that I have ever seen.

@John John Well he did help pass the 13th amendment which liberate slaves in the U.S and he wanted to give 400 acres of Land but died and Johnson was against the order and the confederates were overwhelmingly pro slavery so they weren't much better I mean when Blacks. were allowed to serve in the Union army the confederacy gave an order to kill all black soldiers and there white officers . And the Democrats stole the election that is an anti democratic belief that fuelled the confederacy they seceded just because someone they didn't like won .

The fighting for bread scènes, are a nice preview of what is to come in the very near future!!! 🙏🙏🙏

Best battle scenes better than "Gettysburg ","Cold Mountain" or "Glory". I visited the Antietam battlefield in 2010. It is surrounded by beautiful country with split rail fences like it was frozen in time.

Good quality production, represents the choas and confusion of battle and avoids over sanitising the effects of the minie bullet.

Very vivid re- enactment. Good acting.Thank you for posting this.

No. Just no. This movie is so poor. I'm not even going to waste my breath on explaining why in the very first 6 minutes it's a shitty movie

Everyone have wholeheartedly put together in my opinion a masterful occasion of that time , not only we'll done but mesmerising to see

You may wish they would all be alive again and they would all play the same scenes again.... If you want a new episode in a couple of years , you would have to add a whole new casting crew ending in the same result... They will never learn and are condemned to repeat the same mistakes again as a never ending story you will be glad to watch forever.... Please show us Gone with the wind... ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Magnificent! I was impressed that the makers of this film left out music and let the sounds of battle underscore the severity of the situation. And for the actors, brilliant! I wouldn't mind having some of them play wounded for my Medical Corps Men when we are out on maneuver. Many of them were convincing to an astonishing degree!

Very very impressive battle scenes, probably the best yet ever to hit the screen, thanx for all involved in this gem of a movie, and historicaly correct.

Maybe the most realistic Civil War film ever made. Finally an actor who actually looks like Bobby Lee!

It's remarkable isn't it ? The resemblance is uncanny. That's the first thing I thought when I saw the actor on screen. It almost looks like he's related to the General or something. Perhaps he's a descendant.

Was in the reenacting hobby for over 40 years. Co E 2nd Md CSA was honored to meet Brian Pohanka. This documentary was excellent! Those here that. Portrayed the soldiers of the period have reached perfection! Sarubbi

It is very realistic portrayal of the rude way the battle would have been fought. Leaves hollywood in the dust even though it is not so professional a production, all the same a very clear portrayal of the realities of that war.

One of the best civil war movies. Its like standing beside them, inmidst and among them. Actors, location and artwork are outstanding.

The Vermont Brigades helped quite a bit from my research during the Civil War despite being a small state, the state threw everything they could into it. The 1st Vermont Bridage also know the "Old Brigade" fought at a battle called "Battle of Cedar Creek" and also part of the Army of the Potomac. Also in Vermont farmhouses were abandoned do to all their sons being wounded or killed. The number of being killed was around 1,172 killed. (Thought I drop some history if you saw the "10th Vermont" show up) There's a place in Rutland, Vermont I visited called Giorgetti Park where you can see an old farmer stone wall, stone fence or a foundation (I am not sure do to how long it was). Hoped you enjoy some knowledge. :)

They would have been digging trenches sooner. They figured that out towards the end of the war. Bold charges into massed artillery and rifle fire were mostly suicidal.

Excellent reenacting! Better than in some movies...

The actors were superb! Stellar! Convincing! The pace of the film was very good and realistically depicted the solemn and serious stakes that hung over our nation in 1864. It was only yesterday...in 1958, my grandfather showed me the actual clipping from the morning newspaper the night after Lincoln was shot. He was a kindly lawyer and worshipped Abe Lincoln. It was then that I knew this was all too real.

Great Heros for there country freedom warrior.

Music is too loud. Aside from this, just looking these battle reenactments, awakes profound feeling of terror, compassion and sadness.

They must have been using reenactors from Northern Virginia companies because their historical impression was spot on. They really did this movie right. Don't worry about desertodavid. He obviously thinks that he is a wit, but he is only half right.

So many times I have to explain this, but I'm actually blind, so my ideas about films are often very different from everyone else's. Having a little listen at Gettysburg again, perhaps the sound is a little more impressive, but having been to some re-enactments, the sound in this seems much more realistic.

This really captured the gore of war, the terror and how death surrounds you with troops fighting so close; you feel the sense the next bullet is yours or that you loading under fire is tempting fate as you struggle to get a shot. It is superb and the actors are great, Lee looks like his twin! It is well casted for many. There is no real romance here, it was survive or die; suffering and sacrificing, stakes are high for everyone involved and it was not promised at all you would get out alive or you would gain victory. You start to feel for the men as they die or get wounded.. What got me was the one rebel soldier seeing his friend suffer from a wound and he begs like a child for the Union musket to stop, but is drowned out by guns and bullets buzzing by him, hitting men or the tree he cowers behind. This was Americans, all of them, butchering each other in droves. Let us remember this war and the carnage, and avoid having this slaughter again; for another war would destroy the nation and leave nothing for anyone, and the sacrifices of soldiers from this war to current would have been *in vain.*

An excellent film about the American Civil War which I haven't seen before. I am a Brit with American born relatives so American history is of interest to me as much as British history. The only other film I have seen of the American Civil War is 'Glory' which shows the brutality of war of which the Civil War is one of the bloodiest and probably the first modern war because of the technology at the time with the first Ironclads and also submarine warfare not previously experienced in previous wars. Well done to Lionheart in making this film.

Just saying but I am an American with British born ancestors the Ike’s and sefftons and a civil war movie I would recommend you to watch is Gettysburg it’s my all time favorite movie and the reason is because the scenes of the 20th Maine on little round top where shot on the property of my 4x great grandfather Jacob weikert who’s house and barn was used as a Union field hospital for the 5th corps army of the Potomac and I would also recommend the movie Gettysburg because during the battle there was this British soldier named Arthur Lyon Fremantle who was at Gettysburg and he is in the movie Gettysburg and another thing that i would recommend to you is to read this book called what a young girl saw and heard of the battle of Gettysburg and it’s the only civilian account of the battle and the author is Tillie pierce Aleman and the original copy of the book is at Pennsylvania state university’s online library and the book is amazing because when people hear of the Gettysburg the names of my ancestors the Weikerts Shrivers and Kitzmillers they think that they didn’t play a part in American history but when I read the book it told me what my ancestors experienced like from witnessing soldiers being amputated and speaking to generals and to being called something that the person isn’t and being threatened by a gun and lying and also hearing about what parts my ancestors played in the battle of Gettysburg and the civil war like before I read the book I never knew that one of my 4x great uncles and aunts attic was used as a confederate sharpshooters nest and I never knew that my 3x great grandfather Emanuel weikert was building his house when the battle happened and I never knew that my 4x great uncle named George E Kitzmiller fought in the battle and I never knew that at that time girls and boys went to different Schools and were segregated and I also never knew that my 4x great grandparents were baking bread and the thing is they had to leave their house with the bread in the oven but luckily union soldiers prevented the house from being burned down.

Never heard of this movie before now. But it looks like it would make a nice addition to the Gods and Generals, Gettysburg, Lincoln series of movies!

I knew the character before the sub title. This reminds me of how The Downfall got really close looking actors to the real life characters.

The Reenactors were fantastic, this made me proud of my fellow reenactors, love the scenes with the women and food shortages and women fighting on street over bread. Confederate Soldiers are being hit with bread pieces or something else, and look like they didn't know what to do!! This film was a masterpiece. You should do a film on the riots of 1863 in New York and Federal Soldier coming from Gettysburg.

At 12:57, the subtitle says, "Army of the Potomac Headquarters." Wrong! It should say, "Army of Northern Virginia Headquarters." I can't continue to view a film in which the producers can make such an egregious error.

AWESOME MOVIE, brought back fond memories of my reenacting days. Was great seeing my ol' comrades Ed Mantel and the Surgeon Rex Hovey , GREAT JOB pards ! Miss you all . Oh & bwy, too bad the Confederate sniper pulled to the right !

This is very good I had the DVD with the CD for the sound track. Still think Wicked Spring is your best film done. Other than that I wish the sound was better in some pats of this film. But that happens on all productions.

Not having hundreds of re-enactors is fine, as this is a low budget film. What's missing however in a well-staged skirmish sequence is no cries from the wounded or those immediately hit. The confusion and chaos of battle isn't there.

I had two Ellis brothers from Puslinch in Canada fighting for the Union. One killed and one shot in the hand.

A self confessed CW nut; re-enactor; portraying the 14th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry that fought at Monocacy, and for its courage, is referred to as "The Monocacy Regiment". If you are there, visit our monument!
