    I think the parents were right. It was the best option for them - smaller, but nicer area and beautifully updated. His parents support them, I think it's lovely! He values the opinion of his parents and I think that's wonderful. The other couple has seen amazing properties out in the country and found the right place for them too, great! Even though old, it was still a really nice episode as always, thanks!🎉

    Yeah, because you don't want people with a lot of life experience giving you advice or insight. Learning from other people's experiences and mistakes is never useful and getting help making a decision from people who have known you from infancy (and know you find it difficult to commit) - big mistake. Of course, the fact that the parents were able to advise them to get a flat that they ended up loving, that's just the exception to the rule: never, ever, involve your parents in any major decisions. They are useless.

    @@FigaroHeyFigaro, my parents had a set idea of what was good for me, which happened to correspond exactly to their tastes and values - not mine, which they never understood. There is _no way_ I would have consulted them on such an important decision as buying a home, and I didn't. My home, my choice, no anxious twittering in my ear, no regrets. Part of this young man's difficulties might be precisely that he is unable to cut the apron strings; why so indecisive when he is left alone to decide with his girlfriend/fiancée and Kirstie? But he is perfectly fine letting his parents choose a flat for him sight unsern. This isn't someone who listens to his parents' advice then makes up his own mind; this is someone who has no capacity to function as full-fledged adult. There is a forest of red flags for the young woman here.

    The narrow bathroom with the green tub in the first flat would be a deal breaker for me, as wood the tiny eating nook in the second flat. And, I agree that bigger is better, so you can grow into it over time. I can understand why the parents might like something more finished, but they are at a different stage of life. I don't understand the current obsession with open concept, unless the rooms are otherwise quite small. I don't always want people to watch over and distract me while I cook. If I am entertaining, I prepare the meal in advance so I don't spend the social time in the kitchen - but for a few finishing touches. When I relax in the sitting room, I don't want to see the dishes waiting to be washed. Mostly, I like having the quiet spaces and storage that walls provide. Moving with the hopes of starting a catering business in an unknown area seems risky. Without a business plan, a proper assessment of existing area shoppes, etc., it's seems like a wishful assumption about which is the best location. I am also surprised that kitchen details are not high on the list, considering the catering aspirations. Having grown up in rural Nova Scotia, I love seeing the Scottish landscape and the similarities of the views :) Risk averse - sight unseen? Wow!

  • @lysem4392

    @lysem4392

    Regarding the obsession with open spaces: I am 110 percent in agreement. If I have people over for a meal, I too will prepare it in advance. I too would prefer not to have a pile of dishes staring at me while I have after dinner conversation with my friends. Even if I am on my own, I find it more relaxing to have separate spaces. I _don't_ want to have a kitchen in my living room! I _don't_ like a room that has all the intimacy of an airport hangar. Besides, I like a house to have a bit of a sense of mystery: I don't want all its spaces to be revealed to me the instant I step into it. I like nooks and crannies; I like unexpected layouts; I like to be surprised and enchanted. Regarding the catering business: I completely agree again. No indication was given that either one of this couple had any experience at all in this; it all comes across as a dream of what fun such a business would be. I have no business experience either, but my little finger tells me that running the business would take more time than that actually spent cooking. Another possible hurdle is that she seems so unfamiliar with Scotland; her target consumers might be quite different from what she expects.They also would like to start a family, so having a new baby, if it happens (she is in her forties) would leave little time, energy, and money for setting up a business while also learning how to run it on the go. This all looks very, very risky. Realistically, his income would need to be sufficient to finance both the potential new family and the iffy new business if they are to stay afloat.

My brother doesn't. His girlfriend doesn't. My best friend doesn't. People who live in older apartments don't. Also, having or not having a dishwasher will never change my strong preference : I don't want my kitchen to be in my living room, sort of like I don't like my beef stew to have ice cream on it: these things are best left separate.

    @@relocatetoItaly I have a dish washer. When I prep a meal, I clean as I go and if there is time I also load the DW. As I put the food into serving dishes, I rinse and stack the pots and utensils, but for a big meal they wouldn't all fit in the DW unless I run two loads, and if I did that right away the food would get cold. When the meal is over, as I clear the table for dessert, I rinse and stack all the dishes ready to load. My kitchen is small, but I have learned to be efficient over the years, and have staging areas for each task, but there is always something on display waiting to be done. We don't leave the dishes until morning, but it still takes time to get everything done. When we leave the table to sit in the living room, it's nice to sit and relax where we can't see it. Some people don't mind a mess, but I can't relax if I have to look at it. I like to sit in another room so my guests don't feel like they need to help clean up.
