When boaters hit Miami’s waters for Memorial Day weekend, there are some spots that they won't be able to visit.

As a boter for over 45 years I completly support this descion. There is nothing worst than having the people that enjoy our waters the most be the sole responsibles for trashing our islands and bay. I rather this type of meausre than seeing so many irresponsible people that don't appreciate how lucky we are to have our natural resources. Hopefully this will raise awareness and consciousness, specially for the boat owners and captains who are ultimately responsible for the safety and behavior of their guests. My personal view when being on the water is to leave with more trash than what I come with. I carry extra trash bags to take all trash that I find even if it is not my own and I teach my kids the same. That is the legacy I strife to leave behind.

The video shows the garbage cans that the City / County has had on those islands for years. They collected the garbage every Monday. That told the boaters that there is garbage pickup service on the islands, so many left their garbage bags there. But what about the responsible boaters that don't litter? Why is it OK to ban them from the islands? Why was there no public meeting or public hearing before closing the islands to everyone? Why is it possible for the police to enforce an island closure, but not inform and enforce the new "leave no trace" policy? It's very easy to take away a personal freedom, as long as it's someone else's personal freedom.

Congrats L Aguirre! You have been instrumental in in making a difference. This situation has gotten progressively worse. I've been a boater for many years. Back in 90's we used to go to a cove close to Fisher Island. We finally took action and would bring trash bags once a month and pick up trash others left. We would leave with 2 or 3 full bags per boat. I rather the islands remain close than seeing how poorly other boaters trash our treasure. Bravo!!!

Don’t let this be turned into Cuba. The city shouldn’t punish the many for the actions of the few…. With all the environmental funds they take in they should do their jobs and just enforce the laws that have been on the books for ever and hold the litter bugs accountable… That’s what used to be done when this was a civilized society.

So Memorial Day and July 4th are like Spring Break but for boaters. Got it.
I applaud the city of Miami for shutting this down. It’s way overdue. The people that visit and trash those islands have no business going there. Hopefully this shutdown is permanent.

Paradise lost because of slobs. In the 60's and 70's we carried out our own trash. What's so hard about be a responsible adult and protecting what God gave us?
As much as I worked against the bottle bill in Michigan, it has helped with littering. If the abandoned deposits could be credited to retailers who exchange the bottles that would be an improvement. People trash our lakes too, but there is always lots of pier pressure! (Get it, Pier Pressure?)
Bravo!!!
Imagine if this was done countrywide 😢 people are such pigs compared to years gone by 😢😢😢 How about enforcing litter laws, it would be a great way to collect millions of dollars annually, thus allowing us who respect nature to enjoy nature.

Was walking around Virginia key by the old Flipper set. Several people on the tiny little beach were leaving by boat. They left every single piece of trash. Beer boxes, hotdog packaging, and left the little fire going. Then a boat pulls up and throws 2 garbage bags of trash off the front onto the beach. Right in front of us.
