City of Miami officials closing Biscayne Bay islands to all boaters

When boaters hit Miami’s waters for Memorial Day weekend, there are some spots that they won't be able to visit.

Don’t let this be turned into Cuba. The city shouldn’t punish the many for the actions of the few…. With all the environmental funds they take in they should do their jobs and just enforce the laws that have been on the books for ever and hold the litter bugs accountable… That’s what used to be done when this was a civilized society.

As a boter for over 45 years I completly support this descion. There is nothing worst than having the people that enjoy our waters the most be the sole responsibles for trashing our islands and bay. I rather this type of meausre than seeing so many irresponsible people that don't appreciate how lucky we are to have our natural resources. Hopefully this will raise awareness and consciousness, specially for the boat owners and captains who are ultimately responsible for the safety and behavior of their guests. My personal view when being on the water is to leave with more trash than what I come with. I carry extra trash bags to take all trash that I find even if it is not my own and I teach my kids the same. That is the legacy I strife to leave behind.

The video shows the garbage cans that the City / County has had on those islands for years. They collected the garbage every Monday. That told the boaters that there is garbage pickup service on the islands, so many left their garbage bags there. But what about the responsible boaters that don't litter? Why is it OK to ban them from the islands? Why was there no public meeting or public hearing before closing the islands to everyone? Why is it possible for the police to enforce an island closure, but not inform and enforce the new "leave no trace" policy? It's very easy to take away a personal freedom, as long as it's someone else's personal freedom.

I live in Baltimore County, Maryland and have a condo in Miami Beach @ 55th and Collins. On one side is a gorgeous beach, on the other side is Biscayne Bay. The beach now has greater public access which is good. But, (BIG but) litter / trash on the beach has become really bad. I kayak around the Bay side and even THAT has become trashy. Sad. Happy that the islands are now closed to drunken boaters!!!

This boaters in Miami not boaters in general. We have an island in Pensacola that boaters go to every weekend. There is not so much as a buble gum wrapper. There is no police presence. The law is for the lawless.

@@OmarLopez-yh2lx I am not in Miami, actually Minnesota. My point is that if you provide garbage cans people get trained to leave garbage next to them when full. The islands we have do not have garbage cans and nearly everyone is responsible and packs out what they bring in.

@@rack9458 Different class of people up in Minnesota too. The people down here are entitled, foolish pr*cks that don't care. So glad to hear there is another place in this country where people are still courteous of their surroundings. Not down here though. Which is why Florida is becoming less and less desirable of a place. The people inhabiting it are ruining it.

The trash is 99% from the locals that are pigs and if the trash bins are full, you should always bring a plastic bag in your boat and pick up your own garbage and take it with you when you leave get a grip man
