City Girls JT | Angie Martinez IRL Podcast

This week on Angie Martinez IRL Podcast, Grammy award nominated, multi-platinum selling hip hop star JT of the City Girls.
Straight out of Miami, this born hustler has always been an intelligent girl who wanted to move faster and further. From Burger King to Whole Foods to scammin’ to rapping and topping the charts, JT always had the skills, but she couldn't always break the generational curses. Less than two months after dropping her first record with the City Girls, she was indicted and would later have to go on to serve a federal prison sentence. One week after she was released, a global pandemic happened. Imagine that?
Although she has found love & success, the trauma still rears its ugly head sometimes, and she often feels misunderstood. However, JT is learning how to deal with her life day by day and acknowledges to Angie that she is ready for therapy.
The future is bright for JT - she’s rekindled a relationship with her mother, taken on the challenge of rewriting the angry black girl narrative, focused on holding the City Girls together, and mastering what it means to be unapologetically true to herself. Check out JT in a way you have never seen her…. in real life.

I think therapy will benefit her so much, especially since it’s obvious she’s been doing the work in her own. She hit my heart hard when she said, "Back then I wasn't afraid, because I knew they were going to F with it; but now I'm a little afraid." As we get older, fear inevitability creeps into our spirit and we no longer believe in ourselves and our abilities like we did when we were young. Life and people change us sometimes for the worse or stops us in our tracks, because we forget who we are and what we are really all about. JT is turning that corner and is realizing what is really important and that is her self-worth and inner peace. Those two things are more valuable than anything else in the world. She did a GREAT interview and I wish her much success on her growth.

this was such a real vulnerable interview. there was so many key points, and things she has over-came. Imagine living with 16 siblings, abandonment, mom on drugs & then in out and out of people house at such a young age. I’m so glad JT was so open & well-spoken about her life. Definitely saw her in a different light. I love that she wants to change. She understands now that’s she’s leaving an legacy behind her. I’m so genuinely Proud of her growth & can’t wait to see what 2023 has in-stored for her.

I hate that after going through all that growing up she spent the biggest moments in her life (at the time) in prison. She literally went in a day after her feature with Drake dropped. What makes it worse is that rapping was her idea and she wasn’t there to enjoy it. I’m glad all that is behind her though, I’m sure she have nothing but greatness coming her way.

I got to see the humanity in JT not that I never did but it’s just good to see she wants to be seen as Human & not this character people have painted her out to be and she’s an extremely vulnerable girl because of her past especially with her already being a timid individual. Give her grace and love folk and don’t forget to give her her flowers for going out on a limb and starting the group.🙏🏽💪🏽💡

This is JT’s BEST interview I’ve ever seen her have and she doesn’t have many. It was very smart of her to take it upon herself to ask Angie for a conversation. She completely spoke her truth. Essentially, she knows who she is and what she wants and the direction she wants to move in. I love that. It’s crazy how the media or anyone can just paint their own narrative of someone. “City Girls” is ultimately her dream and what she wanted and has so much talent. I love that she still wants to share that platform with Caresha no matter what. She’s a girls girl, caring, supportive, loving, beautiful.. EVERYTHING they try to paint her not to be. I’m rooting for her. She comes from humble beginnings and is still solid. I can’t wait to see her shine brighter into who she is truly becoming and after therapy. This was so good.
