Citizenfour: Inside Story of NSA Leaker Edward Snowden Captured in New Film by Laura Poitras

democracynow.org - "At this stage I can offer nothing more than my word. I am a senior government employee in the intelligence community. I hope you understand that contacting you is extremely high risk … This will not be a waste of your time.” This was one of the first messages Edward Snowden wrote to filmmaker Laura Poitras beginning an exchange that helped expose the massive surveillance apparatus set up by the National Security Agency. Months later, Poitras would meet Snowden for the first time in a Hong Kong hotel room. Poitras filmed more than 20 hours of footage as Snowden debriefed reporters Glenn Greenwald and Ewen MacAskill. That footage - most unseen until now - forms the backbone of Poitras’ new film, “Citizenfour.” She joins us to talk about the film and her own experience with government surveillance. The film is the third installment of her 9/11 trilogy that also includes “My Country, My Country” about the Iraq War and “The Oath” about the U.S. military base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. Poitras’ NSA reporting contributed to a Pulitzer Prize for Public Service awarded to The Guardian and The Washington Post.

It may be just just me, but does anyone else wonder why incredible women like Laura Poitras are not highly sought after and desired by many men (and other women who are lesbians), instead of most hollywood actresses who appear to severely lack in intelligence. Man, if I were single I could definitely see myself going for someone like her.

We’ve got nothing to fear - but fear itself? Not pain or failure, not fatal tragedy? Not the faulty units in this mad machinery? Not the broken contacts in emotional chemistry? With an iron fist in a velvet glove We are sheltered under the gun In the glory game on the power train Thy kingdom’s will be done And the things that we fear Are a weapon to be held against us… He’s not afraid of your judgement He knows of horrors worse than your Hell He’s a little bit afraid of dying - But he’s a lot more afraid of your lying And the things that he fears Are a weapon to be held against him… Can any part of life - be larger than life? Even love must be limited by time And those who push us down that they might climb - Is any killer worth more than his crime? Like a steely blade in a silken sheath We don’t see what they’re made of They shout about love, but when push comes to shove They live for the things they’re afraid of And the knowledge that they fear Is a weapon to be used against them…

I just saw this and It was very good, although some of it was very misleading. Right off the bat, this was not a documentary, but like the popular series "Offices" it was meant to look like one. The Character of Glenn Greenwald was played by actor Eddie Deezen. Snowden played himself. He also wrote directed and produced the film. Interesting fact. Glenn Greenwald doesn't know Portuguese, but Deezen is fluent. Scenes where Greenwald was speaking Portuguese was a way for Snowden to make Greenwald appear as, "less of a middle management shlub." James Clapper was misrepresented as pro NSA, when really, before the falling out, Clapper gave Snodwen the idea to steal secrets. The biggest give away that this was a work of fiction, loosely based off of a true story is perhaps that when Snowden was said to be in Hong Kong, they were actually shooting in Oslo. That is why Wikileaks founder, Julian Asange, was able to make a cameo appearance. Greenwalds lover was played by a member of a Brazilian boy band called Br'oZ. Br'oZ had much success in the early 2000s. Other than all that the movie was fantastic, and I strongly recommend seeing it.

***** You know Hollywood these days. It's all canned, as they say. This was a great movie. I'm glad to see that it was recognized at the Oscars. Eddie Deezen did a fantastic job playing Glenn Greenwald. Other than the discrepancies that I mentioned, this movie was pretty true to real life. Definitely based on a true story, if not exactly a true story.

This is ridiculous. NOne of this is true. It's a documentary. Glenn Greenwald was himself, for God's sake. Where do you get the idea it was filmed in Oslo? Assange was not in Oslo.

@@elizabethcsicsery-ronay1633 maybe you’re thinking of a different movie. Did you have another window or tab open? Maybe you mistook my comment, with one on another tab that is….. suspect. If you were intending to respond to my comment…. Anyway, I have read what I wrote. I believe it’s all true, but it has been six years. I’ve had a rich and adventurous life since then. I survived a pandemic. It was very distracting. I wouldn’t mind watching this again. If I watch it and see something that proves I’ve been inaccurate, I’ll update my original post with redactions. Thanks, Elizabeth. I hope you enjoyed the movie as much as I did!!

Our Creator gave us the knowledge of building a computer and internet by only 2 numbers, zero and one in order to show His mathematical miracles in the Arabic Quran, and to work as the largest archives of information and at the same time to expose the evil doers amongst us. He gathered together few young people from the middle of nowhere, fully protected, in order to expose the evils. This is the power of the Almighty God.
