I just order yesterday blue version. I wanted automatic diver for long time and i choose this Citizen.

After some time of watching comparing videos I bought the Citizen at a diver's shop for € 190,-- . It's a NY0040-09EE build in July 2021 with the updated Miyota work 8204 which is hackable (great!). It looks so stunning with the black dial, very good build quality with all elements accurately in place. It holds time so good that I have to look twice before realizing that it hasn't lost or gained a second during the last 3 days. I wear it 24/7 because it's so comfortable with the crown at the 8 o'clock position and it keeps the watch running accurate. The lume is absolutly readable throughout the night without extra exposure to light in between. My only complaint is working the crown because it can be a bit fiddly to get it back in. Other than that I'm happy as I can be with my purchase. It will accompany me to Africa next year as my Safari watch.

@@GadgetsforGentlemen Besides the now hackable movement the new ones come with a rubber strap which is softer than the older ones. Therefore I see no reason to change that. There is a successor model with sapphire crystal, a bit larger at 44 mm but also with prize of about € 300,-- definetely more expensive. I wanted a tool watch which can withstand some rough use and I wanted it to be automatic (I have a G-Shock Rangeman GW-9400, too, so the quartz compartment is already full) and this very model is quite perfect for my needs. Your video and this article were the last pushes (www.fratellowatches.com/citizen-promaster-ny0040-dive-watch/#gref) I needed to get it so the diver's shop owes you a beer.

These are 100% still in production. Your serial number starts with “8D” which means 2018 December production date. So likely build my right before you bought one. I’ve seen 2019 serial numbers on the forums. Unfortunately Citizen only distributes these in a few European countries (Italy, Greece etc.) which is part of the reason many people think they have been discontinued.

I have the same watch that I bought back in 1997. It has scratches on the bezel but not on the crystal. The original rubber strap broke long time ago and I have since replaced it with a quick release metal band a couple of days ago since I have started wearing it again. One thing I learned from this video though is I didn't know it can be winded by hand.

Hi Boris. I feel what you are saying. I think I will regret letting the blue dial go. For the time being I keep it in my collection. I pair it up with a shark mesh bracelet. This makes it a bit more versatile compared to wearing it on the original blue rubber strap in my opinion. If I need to choose only one NY0040, then I will keep the black dial due to its classy and sturdy look.

I just received this watch and I must say I am very pleased, I am happy I bought it in black (thank you for helping me with the decision) I bought a nice strap because I don't like the one it comes, rubber is not my thing.you got a new viewer, I like your videos:)

Thanks for your comment Mr Thabet. I don’t think Citizen makes divers with sapphire crystals. However, you may want to have a look at the Citizen NY0071-81EE, it ticks a lot of boxes. Orient also makes divers that have a lot going on, for example Orient RK-AU0301B, Ray, Mako, Triton. Don’t get me started on Seiko: mini Turtle, SPB077, SPB079... Hope this helps your search!

I got both too!! Blue first, then black for same reasons. Great watches.

Great Video, nicely explained! But when I saw the Vostok on the watchwinder I had to sit down , because I had to laugh so hard. Lol! I myself own a couple of tho Citizen 0040. But I won't get one without the hacking feature. Makes on sense. At least they must have the 8204 movement that is hackable. My newest Citizen is the 0100-50M That titanium case works so beautifully with that blue dial, g always keep looking at the watch.

6:19 Have you heard of the ``SKX 171´´ which does have applied indices and polished plain aluminium bezel? It seems much more unknown and difficult to find than the ``009´´ or ``007´´ we are accostumed to. It's shocking to me that nobody on the internet seems to care about it! I have one currently on my wrist and it looks just as good as this Promaster. Nice video by the way!

The lowest price you can find it in Greece now, is around 180 Euros. Most stores sell it for 200-250 euros. In a big retail store i found this Citizen ny0040 for 305 Euros!!! I bought it 1 year ago for just 150 E. The price in other European countries are even higher. This model consider to be one of the best watches of Citizen and the price will go up as the time goes by. Especialy if the production stops

Hi, there is also a little bit of play on the bezels of both my NY0040 watches when I press from top-down. Especially at the 2 o clock position when the bezel is properly aligned at 12 o clock. Hope this helps 😁

Much appreciated! I have owned three different ones. Currently I have the black dial and the blue dial with a Pepsi bezel. The black dial somehow got one large horizontal scratch. The blue dial version that I used to have was absolutely fine. The Pepsi so far so good. Guess the black dial had a battle scar, but I do not even know what battle it was. All I can say: I love these watches. Writing with a SEIKO SKX009J1 on the wrist, another one of my current favourite watches.

@@Dilshan_Kasun I never serviced mine. Probably most watch makers know how to service/repair it when needed. It is a simple movement. I can highly recommend this watch and also the dive watches by Orient. Alternatively you could go for the new Seiko 5 diver, that resembles the SKX lineup.

Iron Man at the 12. I also own that watch. Fantastic watch and keeps great time. Very accurate. Better than the SKX in every way. Citizen never gets the love Seiko receives. Unfortunate. You can't get a better watch for the money than a Citizen Promaster. Great review. Not sure I would say a mineral crystal is prone to scratching. Prone is too strong a word. It's just not as scratch resistant as a sapphire.

Hi Pete, as far as I can see it has the do with the intended market. Northern Europe vs Souther Europe. Thus the second language on the date wheel seems to vary according to market group. I recently purchased the Citizen Promaster NY0040-09EEM from MIT. it looks great and compared to my Samurai, has extra attention like the framed date/day, wears small, and deep face color.. However for only $60 USD (at dept store) more the Samurai feels much better (and wears smaller than its size). The 60 click bezel feels very coarse, the stainless band feels very inexpensive, and the lume is close but not as good. If you can get it under $200 it is a good casual watch, but paying more approaches the sale price of the Seiko Samurai at dept stores. I think the NY0040 looks great with the black band, they did away with the N.D. on band, and they hack now. I am keeping mine.

I have both the blue and black version, great affordable auto watches. A bit underrated IMHO but I'm perfectly fine with that. I also have the SKX007J and IMO, the NY0040 is a better watch.

What is the pendle? When I shake the watch I can feel and hear the rotor of the automatic movement spinning. That’s quite normal with these movements. I think it has some charm 😁

I’m not sure. I know Seiko produces most of its affordable watches outside of Japan (Malaysia, South Korea or China for example) due to the higher costs of manufacturing in Japan.

Emam Araf hi Emam, I see it’s quite hard actually. In many shops it’s out of stock, such as: www.chronograph-divers.com/citizen-ny0040-09e/ My advice would be to check Amazon, eBay and Chrono 24. Or come to Europe. Availability here is much better 😁

The “Marina military” story could not be verified at any Italian watch house. It is more of a marketing tactic than a real story. The military probably used a look a like watch without any logo or similar case but not the actual watch promaster here. Really the Marina military has nothing to do with this watch. People like to think it did but it didn’t. Lastly, non of this watches is “under 200usd”
