Cities: Skylines II Strategy & Tactics: Parking Lots

Ойындар

New to the Skylines series we have ploppable parking lots that are more than just cosmetic additions to your cities. The traffic in your city is more than just the cars on the road, but also the cars OFF the road and when parking becomes a problem, it can spread. Today I share with you my tips and observations regarding the humble parking lot and where to use it.
Here is a spreadsheet with the numbers I crunched on the lots themselves, if you want to see the numbers all in one place: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Good call on the underground parking with the dedicated drive. Most of my traffic issues currently are due to people crossing double yellow lines to park in a lot on the opposite side of the street...

I mostly just use the medium parking lots because they can connect to both streets at a corner, and can connect to each other if placed side by side. They will still fill up pretty quickly, so you might need several of them for medium density or high density areas.

Great video as always;) one small tip, maybe I missed you saying it, when you create district, you can specify parking fee on the street, great for high density zones

Haven't got to the automated parking but the underground is amazing. Takes up very little space but has tons of space and low upkeep compared to the over ground lots. Edit. Did some digging. The automated one holds 416 cars vs 200 for the underground. However the footprint is more than double and the upkeep is $160k to hold 416 vs $7k to hold 200. So save your points for something else.

Correct. It is a late game "I have more money than I know what to do with and want a fancy but technically functional trophy building for my downtown" building.

Pin, can you please please please do one on mass transit? I just can't get people to take trains or busses. So I'd like to know how long routes should be....where should they go....at what size do we build a bus/train depot....so on and so forth. I canceled all my bus routes with 1-3% ridership and my trains are 3-5%. No idea what's happening.

A couple of small tips, your routes can be fairly long but it's best if they don't meander around too much. You need to wait a reasonably long time after placing a route for the busses to leave the depot and enter the line. If your depot is too far or there aren't enough busses to run while they're undergoing maintenance you're going to see massive drop off in riders whenever your busses need repairs. It also takes some time for cims to "discover" the route. They might be already at work or at another destination for a while before they decide to plan a trip. You won't see immediate results, but as routes start to see use the buildings around your stops will level up and make the routes themselves more desirable. Trams have a fairly high capacity so don't rush into placing them when a bus will do. The easiest way to increase your rider numbers is to reduce the fares, and busses are much cheaper to run.

@@SineN0mine3 I appreciate the response but have some follow ups. What's the definition of "meander around too much"? Is that 5 stops? 15? 2 map tiles or 10? Should all routes go to all 3 zones or just from res > comm / res > industrial? I ran my routes for over a season and didn't get many riders. So I know something was wrong but I don't know what it was. Never really figured out the formula in SC1 either but there at least some of my routes would work. Thanks!

Has anyone noticed that they only get parking fees for the lots, underground or ground-level, one time when the cars park? and then fees don't collect anymore after that? as if cars park there and then are abandoned. this is frustrating--parking lots cannot be a steady source of income this way.

Street Parking by itself isn't a problem. Street parking when there is a shortage of parking is a big problem. Cars will drive all over the city in search of a stray parking spot.

Good video... but i think you need more population to start talking about strategy and tactics. 5.500 is not considered a city by many country standards. Try all this with your CS2 city at like 20-30-40-50-60k people, 100% a different story. On a side note, many zonables parking lots are broken since sims dont use them at all (comercial zonable parkings mostly)

Because of the current bugs, I'm purposely avoiding some topics until some official patches stabilize them. I also have a smaller city to keep things simpler and easier to demonstrate. As these videos progress, so will the sample city im building until I can show off my tips working in a 50k+ pop city. The other thing I'm avoiding is building tips that take current bugs into account, as those might be outdated in a few weeks. I really want to do some tips on specialized industry but until we get a patch that touches up the cargo harbor.

What is the unit of measurement for the parking fees? Is it paid each time they park? Is it per month? Per hour? The game doesn't say.

It seems to be every time they park. Sadly this means you can't milk them for monthly fees if they keep their car in there long term.

@@Pinstar Blast, well, thank you for answering, I've been looking everywhere for that info. That means you really can't make a profit with parking garages/lots unless you put them near a mass transit, then, the amount of going in and out will ring that cash register. Also, this means I'm loading up my game and bulldozing all of the lots I put near apartment buildings....
