Circus Maximus - Rome's largest racetrack

The Circus Maximus was the greatest circus, venue for chariot races and venationes (hunts), ever constructed by the Romans. In particular the ludi Romani were held here annually and the occasional triumphal processions, snaking their way around the Palatine hill. Located between the Palatine and Aventine hills, its maximum structure, under Trajan, had a seating capacity of 250,000 spectators, around the 540m long track, with a width of 80 m. The remains of the venue are visible on the eastern end: some seating and remains of the Arch of Titus, an archaeological site of the Comune di Roma.

When I was a teen, I lived in Rome, in EUR. I would take the Metro subway to the Colosseum stop, walk down Via dei Fora Imperiali, go to the Capitoline Hill, climb the part of the hill where there was an overlook of the Forum near a nondescript park with a villa, then go down the other side of the hill to the Theater of Marcellus, cross the Ponte Fabricus over the Island in the Tiber, then go over the other bridge to the island and head up to the circular "Temple of Vesta," and over to the Circus Maximus. It always gave me the greatest pleasure to end the walk by going down the spina of the Circus, knowing what an incredibly historic place it was, and then go to the nearby Metro stop back to EUR. There really is no other city in the World quite like Rome. My favorite place on the planet.

@@AncientRomeLive I visited Rome again in 2017 for the 50th Anniversary of my senior class graduation from AOSR. Wonderful to return. My wife and I plan to return again one day, and will definitely look you folks up! FYI, it was interesting in this video to learn that the brick remnants in the Circus are medieval and not Roman remains of the starting gates. Any idea why that structure was built there, aside from being a "fort?" Keep up the great work on your channel!

@@Redhand1949 The tower was constructed to control and dominate the land in that area (i.e., Circus Maximus valley), tied to related fortifications on the Palatine hill. See you in Rome!

No other stadium to this day can compete in capacity with circus maximus biggest stadiums have up to 100k while cm could fit 250k

fire safety codes limit the number of people that could be admitted in a modern stadiums. If those codes were present in ancient Rome, the CM could probably seat about lesser than 100k people.
