Vespasian tried the faith healing experience at an Isis temple in Egypt, he reportedly cured a lame and a blind man. His son Domitian only survived the battle against Vitellius torching the city of Rome by donning a mask of Anubis. Isis was a kind of wellness goddess and very popular with the ladies, the Flavians picked up a lot from that cult too.

The cult of Isis was extremely popular in the early imperial period. So much so, we might just as well be worshiping Isis today!

If the priests of Isis and Serapis had had a structured organization like the Christians, Europe might have worshiped them rather than the way things turned out...her cult was so popular. Some might say Europe did worship them: God the Father is often visualized in art as a Serapis-like figure (Michelangelo in the Capella Sistine); the cult of the Virgin Mary often seems to preserve aspects of the cult of Isis--I think of Holy Week in Seville, where her image is processed like the statue of Isis on her ship through the streets of Imperial cities, her carrus navalis. Indeed Carnivale seems to be the only holiday to survive more or less intact and un-Christianized since antiquity.

Terrific video! So much excellent info. Darius, do you ever think that the Isis cult was eventually overlapped by the Christian cult of Mary?

Did images of Isis suckling Horus make it at all to Rome? This figure combination has been regarded as a prototype for Mary and Jesus. Great video by the way!
