I find it generally easier to solve puzzles like cuboids or prisms piece type by piece type instead of layer by layer. So, after solving the middle layer I would solve all the edges first and then all the corners.

Yes! That's also a good way of doing it. Actually when solving the last layer you end up taking a corner from the bottom layer out anyway, so it's just as well to not even place it until the end.
