    No amount of damage control will ever make me want to buy another roll. It’s a done deal.

    They really have to understand that having competition in business is ultimately better for the consumers. Whether it be competitive quality or competitive pricing, the idea of them wanting to be the sole ‘manufacturer’ of 800Tungsten film is crazy

    I'm sure they understand that perfectly well, but what's good for the consumer isn't good for Cinestill.

    Yeah they shouldn't be hung up on the letter T which most people know stands for Tungsten. Just like the D stands for decongestant in Claritin D the allergy medicine and all store brand variants of it.

    That's not their contention, their issue was Reflex and Catlabs etc claiming their product was "Just like Cinestill" when we know for a fact it's not. Cinestill is likely getting 500T direct from Kodak with the remjet removed or never added in the first place which impacts quality control so much more than some independent washing the film with whatever solution they think works best.

    Their response is professionally written and sounds nice, but in the end its all fluff. Their only claim to own rights (besides leagally though trademark) is that they perfected the remjet remocal process? Even though they weren't the first or the last and are now seemingly threatened because there are companies that also offer a stable and consistent 800 tungsten emulsion? They state that noone has been sued but then continue to stand behind the idea of "800T" only belonging to them because of consumer confusion; showing us that their thought process is the same as all these rumors have mentioned. Predatory yet friendly and professional 😂😂

    Cinestill is dead to me. I've considered their products before, without actually purchasing anything due to the huge markups of their products. Now I just won't consider it.

    Except they're not all the same are they? I've shot all 3 and I can say I get consistent result from Cinestill products and the others are hit/miss. They didn't "Perfect" remjet removal, they likely have a deal with Kodak to get the stock before it's ever added or removed by Kodak themselves which makes a huge difference in quality.

    Yeah and they're justifying it by past standards from other companies, even if their remjet removal process is unique, I'm sure there's no limitation for other companies to find an effective way to remove it. It assumes it's near impossible without their secret formula, nothing but excuses, catlabs and other products are literally fine.

    800t has never meant only cinestill. Cine film have never meant Cinestill. Both are purely descriptive terms. It’s sickening that cinestill continues to defend their fraudulent tactic of shutting down their competitors who sell kodak film of at minimum the same quality

    I haven't gotten around to shooting any of these films yet because of the price but looking at the Box a thumbnail I noticed that after the 800 says Tungsten in the tea is just really large. So if glance at it quickly you might just notice 800T

    To others, perhaps. But then there are people like myself that only know 800T to be only CineStill and it wasn't until diving into the Reddit thread about CineStill that I learned about other 800T films. Up until that point and even now, no other brand of 800 colour negative film comes to mind but CineStill.

  • @AnalogFilmDiary
    @AnalogFilmDiary9 ай бұрын

    The thing is people would fully support them protecting the CineStill brand name. But it’s madness to trademark 800t. Not a huge fan of the implication that we’re all too stupid to understand that different companies can produce the same ISO and white balanced film without it being the same film. Except in their case where, ironically, it literally is the same film

    I'm not buying one more roll of Cinestill regardless. And them claiming they want to protect their trademark of the identifier 800T is going to fail anyways. Any corporate lawyer can tell you that.

    Personally I've always thought the Cinestill look wasn't worth the extra money considering how expensive everything is at the moment. It is much cheaper for me in the UK to buy a bulk pre loaded roll from a retailer like analogue revival and develop it as ECN2 than buying cinestill and using standard C41. cinestill 800T for me here is around 20 GBP per roll plus around 5 GBP for development alone (I scan myself) Kodak vision 500T 6.50 GBP for a roll and 7 GBP to process. Yes some may make the argument that the halation looks cool, but for me the cost alone is enough for me to only bother shooting and developing with ECN2 stuff. Just my opinion though. One thing is for sure your video was very detailed and to the point :)

  • @flyingo

    I agree with many people with whom I’ve spoken that the extra time and expense to remove remjet before exposing the film just isn’t worth the results of having a little bit of halation, or little red halos around lights in the scene. I’ll continue to use Kodak movie film stocks and remove remjet after exposure. But to each their own.. eventually Cinestill will realize their mistake within this trademark nonsense when their revenue continues to drop.. 🤞maybe.

    OK, first of all, cinestill hasn't perfected the quality of their films! I happened to shoot a single film and I had problems with the colors and lightstreaks! And no my camera works perfectly without light leaks! Up until now the best low light films I've tried are lomo800 and portra 800

    To think they really thought this would distinguish them as a true proprietor of art rather than just a capitalist cash grab seems crazy to me! Images that I've captured on their stock have been so beautiful, but I'm not sure if it's worth funding this headache any further..

    The only CineStill I have ever used is the XX black and white stock. I am pretty sure Kodak owns the trademark for their 800T stock and could only sue anyone if someone was using the name Kodak but not for using the 800T designation. CineStill doesn't have a case.....

  • @AR1xRUSHY

    Well cinestill will be taken to court and lose their 800 T trademark. You can’t own an identifier, it would be like owning the type and grain amount of a round of ammunition. Bunk and VOID

    That's some nice spin, but I also don't buy it. I worked at a camera/store lab for years and cinestill had plenty of defects and qc issues back then. Also, the vast majority of customers were well clued, and didn't confuse cinestill with other similar brands.

  • @PooMonkeyMan
    @PooMonkeyMan9 ай бұрын

    TBH, the logic is there behind the trademark. Hearing 800-speed film makes me think of Portra or one of the B&W films, but hearing 800T film, that specifically makes me think of CineStill. If that was their goal, it's worked because there aren't any other 800T films that come to mind until someone mentioned something like Amber, but even then, that becomes an afterthought to CineStill's 800T. Even as someone that started film photography recently, the only two films of 800-speed colour negative were were either Portra or CineStill and only one had the T. If this was what they were after, then it's worked. In hindsight, their film is more expensive and I probably won't buy as much as I would think I will, but their logic behind cementing 800T to their brand is solid.

    What other types of cheap products like store brand hand soap, get off the write on the front of it compared too Softsoap*. I think they do that to make people think it's just as good as the name brand even though my brain takes it literally and I compare what do products Citrus ingredients and scent. However in this case on the back they will acknowledge that did the makers of the true brand don't manufacture the store brand.
