Only having 12 employees is basically an admission that we relabel and contract everything and don't make a damn thing ourselves.

I was a lawyer for 42 years and I do shoot film. This lawsuit (or not) over alleged trademark violation is just trademark bullying of a classic sort. Perhaps the most famous suit f this type was brought by Microsoft against Apple over Microsoft's claim the Apple appropriated its ownership of the "mouse" concept of computer control. The suit went on for years, and millions in legal fees were spent. In the end, the proof was that both Microsoft and Apple stole the concept from Xerox, and Xerox didn't care. Cinestill registered an ISO film speed and a common color balance designation, 800T, as their trademark, but those types of common usage cannot be trademarked. When is that determined? When a trademark holder sues someone for a violation and the trademark is ruled to be valid in court. We are a long way from that ever happening. So where does this go from here? Cinestill said "salute our trademark", and Catlabs said "piss up a rope". So, (1) No where. (Cinestill goes looking for a rope.) (2) Cinestill sues Catlabs, very probably looses, and then pays the big bucks for nothing. (The majority of the 12 company shareholders beat the crap out of the minority who got talked into the nonsense.) (3) Cinestill wins (1% probability), and Catlabs reprints its film boxes "ISO 800 Tungsten". In all outcomes, the lawyers laugh themselves silly while paying off the 52 foot Nauticutt yacht.

Yup 800T was a Kodak film and respooling movie film was Seattle Film Works game in the 70s. So I guess SFW has time machine too.

Seattle Film Works didn't remove remjet so the film could be processed in a normal lab. They just repackaged it and sold it with processing. So, users returned the film to SFW to be processed, then paid for prints or slides printed from the negatives. Because they didn't have to screw with the film itself like Cinestill, and they controlled the full process in-house, quality control was higher than anything you can get from Cinestill films. SFW was started by two guys I went to college with. IMO it never grew bigger because the two of them really had no sense of how to manage a large operation, and both were distracted by outside interests. That might take us down the path of how the Harei Krishna ended up owning the company, but that's another story.

I’ll be ordering SweeT800 as soon as it’s available! Sidenote: I just shot a roll of Amber T800 this past week.

I love how a company of a dozen people are now vilified as CORPORATE SHILLS for protecting a product they mass marketed and pushed to us photo nerds looking to expand our options and now have turned on them because they asked a Chinese reseller and everyone and their mother using their name to advertise the substandard quality product that was causing brand confusion. Aren't American consumers just AWESOME!? 🙄

Trademarks get taken away all the time once someone provides prior art. Is there prior art? Yes there is. Someone just needs to spend the money to challenge it. Who’s gonna do it. Not the eBay sellers working out of their Moms basement.

Recently the trademark owners of "Taco Tuesday" relinquished that trademark.

Glad to see this bs being covered! hoping cinestill makes some serious changes

Years spent building good will in the film community only to make one silly decision to burn it all. Even if they drop this, people are still going to avoid them and mention their reason why.

My take: cinestill/other remjet removed film stocks are an inferior product. If an ecn2 lab is accessible, use it well and save money on film that will give you incredible results: otherwise, do your own black and white and thrive 😊

We are beggars and not choosers here in India. Not seen any lomo film for last few months let aloe their new launches. Kodak blesses us with some stock once every few months. The amount of film we get for whole market would be enough for a single New York street photographer for a month. So I am buying anything i can get my hand on Cinestill or not. Sometimes there is no free market

Thanks so much!! When I moved last time, I ended up living next door to this dude I went to college with who is now a personal trainer. I started lifting with him, and just kept it consistent!! That was late 2020?

Don't forget to flush your toilet after you use it. Pretty much where this opinion belongs.
