A magnificent motion picture experience

I remember vividly seeing How the West Was Won at the Denver Cooper Theater in 1963. I was 15 years old at the time and to say I was impressed would be an understatement. What an incredible experience it was, from the assigned seating, the intermission in the lobby with no food or drink in the theater and the overall ambiance of that wondrous Cooper Theater with unbelievable 7 channel sound.....all lost today. I saw several movies in that Denver theater and was able to see the three-strip How the West Was Won twice in 1963. Wonderful memories.

It is a cool experience. Very unique for its day. I wish people cared about the cinema like that today.

Wow, can you imagine...? Three rolls same time and change it chapter by chapter and on what a huge Film it is? Its big and long. Its so great that modern technique can bring and show this without stripes on BluRay, and i am glad that i watched this with my beloved dad , a huge Fan of classic Westerns two times shortly before he died. I have a BIG Flat TV 75 " (or so) and it was real Cinema feeling, it is the only Movie where i had to move my head from side to side to see all the details left and right. A friend of mine isnt in Westerns but THIS Movie is one of his favs.

We saw this in Bradford recently. Fantastic cinema, the Pictureville in the National Media Museum!

Great thrill seeing it in 1962 at The Eglinton Cinerama in Toronto where it played for 52 weeks.

I was there for this screening and that’s my voice saying, “That’s Dave”after Dave Strohmaier is introduced. (I was telling my wife that Dave was up there). Seeing true three panel Cinerama is an experience unlike anything else in a theater.

I happened to be visiting LA on this night, and it was so cool to see a movie in true Cinerama (even cooler that it was one of two features filmed on three strip). I'm so happy I came across this video for a behind the scenes tour.

I was in Hollywood that time and i was not aware of this festival,unfortunately I missed it . I first saw it at theater row in Dallas Texas at the Melba's Capri.In 64 I saw it again when we were visiting our grand parent in Montg Ala.Saw it at Montgomery drive in theater in it's panavision conversion

I would just be happy with single projection cinerama today in 70mm.

I was at a screening of this movie in the same theater around 2010, and Steven Spielberg took one of his kids to see it.

I ran How the West was Won in CineramA at the Theatre Royal Mannchester. Oonly for two nights though. I actually worked down the road at the Gaumont, where we were running Cleopatra in 70mm. Both films and processes were like having the Taj Mahal in your living room! Todd AO at the Gaumont had the edge on quality though. The projectors at the Theatre Royal had oscillating serrated masking plates to blur the lines between the three panels. Happy days. Nigel

I saw it when it first premiered. Was it 1962? I was around 7. I also saw 'It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World' in a Cinerama theater. I remember we had the hardcover souvenir book/program......& maybe the soundtrack.

The three projector process was replaced with Ultra Panavision 70 widescreen process (which yielded a similar 2.76 aspect ratio to the original Cinerama, although it did not simulate the 146-degree field of view.) Optically "rectified" prints and special lenses were used to project the 70 mm prints onto the curved screen. The films shot in Ultra Panavision for single lens Cinerama presentation included It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963).

Very interesting video. I'm quite surprised that the Baker projector's shutter was so far out of time (shutter is too far advanced).

Image steadiness on Baker also leaves a lot to be desired... (And it seems that the ABLE projector / mirror / lens has a bit too low Color Temp. compared to B and C projector)

Just starting the projectors at the same time won’t prevent them drifting out of sync. I think the guy that asked how they lock the projectors deserved a better answer.

They have a little timing gear that comes off the drive shaft of the motor, which then synchronizes with the other timing shafts.

Originally, selsyn sync motors were installed on all three projectors plus sound dubber. When you applied 120v power to the selsyn circuit, all 4 motors rotate slightly and lock together. The selsyn’s job was to hold the rotation exact despite slight speed variations of each projector drive motor. If one motor was a little too fast, the excess speed is absorbed into the 4 motor network, pulling the other 3 motors in sync. Also, it IS possible to manually roll a projector while locked. However, it takes a lot of strength to do so because you are actually rolling all 4 machines together.

Being here in NYC, we have no way to see real Cinerama...I'm so jealous!

NYC had The Warner Cinerama and The Lowes State Cinerama, both destroyed now.

@@richin2123 Saw This is Cinerama with my grade8 class 62 years ago.My teeth shook during that famous roller coaster scene.....way before subwoofers!

Fantastic! Are these recent film prints? Looks like it. I have seen documentaries about the digital Restauration of Cinerama films that hide the two seams the best possible and they were made from faded film sources as far as I can remember. Would be great to know if these prints were recent and if so, how they were made. Contact prints from color corrected internegatives perhaps? Anyway: thanks for sharing your passion. I love all those ridiculously expensive and cumbersome old technologies. They are like Rube Goldberg contraptions, but the results are pure magic.

Paul Allen and Bill Gates watched many films at the Seattle Cinerama theatre in the 1970’s. Paul purchased the theatre in 1997 and restored three panel film projection there, along with funding the restoration of HTWWW and TIC negatives in conjunction with Pacific Theatres (owner of Cinerama trademark) and Dave Strohmaier. From those negatives two new prints of both features were struck - one each for The Dome and Seattle Cinerama. Many public screenings of those two features occurred at both theatres for several years.

@@mirrophonic Unfortunately, after Paul's death, the estate had no interest and keeping the Cinerama cinema open.

I am wondering about the equal color timing on all three 35mm panels. For a laboratory it is not an easy work. Congratulations.

Its not easy and the original films never looked good. This was a restoration, with modern stocks so it was a lot better than it would have been during original release. All be it with probably less projection issues.

Saw it with my first girl friemd.

I watched this entire clip. I have no idea what this was about. And for most of the clip, the sound was unintelligible. Oh, well.

The size of the image is irrelevant: if the story is not interesting then no amount of visual enhancement will improve matters.

Yep, spot on! It’s just a gimmick in the long run. They never made a great movie using Cinerama.

so So, so then, when is this cinema gonna be demolished into rubble to make way for new homes for the homeless as cinema is non-essential.

@@CinemaRepository How the West Was Won is an incredibly good movie. It explains that in 150 years, the west went from a desolate territory with some primitive tribes killing each other into what we have today. I was born in the foothills of the Rockies and now live in Las Vegas.
