Cinema Pasifika: Episode 1 - Va Tapuia by Tusi Tamasese

Cinema Pasifika is a new series of programmes showcasing short films from the Pacific Islands region. In this first episode from Samoa, Va Tapuia (Sacred Spaces), Taro planter Lui’s grief for his dead wife has infected his whole life. A chance meeting with a stranger, a widow bound in anger to the grave of her husband now drowning in their cyclone devastated village, inspires Lui to reach out to her. This releases him from his own pain and allows his wife to rest. In the accompanying short interview Director, Tusi Tamasese, says he wanted his short film to explore the effects of loss on different people - in this case, someone who has lost a loved one and another who has lost a person she detested but cannot seem to escape from.

Love the quietness of his movies...I thought it was French influenced but when he mentioned Kurosawa, I was like, yeah...beautifully done. His movies are like getting lost in a great book.

Brilliant film! Not much of a dialogue or spoken words, but the emotions of the 2 actors portraying their feelings towards their deceased spouses.. and how each dealt with their losses individually... speaks louder than words. Metaphorically, the widower with his taro plantation who's mourning his wife's death... somehow affected his plantation and the widow... who've placed her deceased husband in a shallow watery grave.. portrays another kind of grieving. It's amazing! I'm sure they have no former training in acting, but that separates true talent, from those hollywood actors who were taught in classrooms. A ea? Fa'amalo lava le taumafai Tusitala and the actors involved, including the entire crew. Kudos!!!

I appreciate this film maker's perspectives and was struck particularly at his observation in the difference of intimate expression in films by the Western versus Samoan. Enjoy watching his work.

Both have lost their spouses and both dealt with it differently. But they both have one thing in common. Their ability to let go.

Nice work! The truth of any film has to come out no matter where it's shot at....it is what it is, and that's what it's all about...the reality of your existence in anything you do. I like the film if it was only completed.

The film was completed. We dont need to be spoon fed. I saw his other projects.. thats he's style. He leaves it up to the audience to come to their own conclusion, of what they think is the meaning of the film.

@@fuesuavai3960 That's why I said what I said....nothing about being spoon-fed. You're being argumentative!!!! No need or this is worthless to comment under!!!! This isn't the only film I've watched in my whole entire life.
