Cine vs Photo Lenses Are They Worth The Money ?

Фильм және анимация

In this video, we're going to talk about the differences between cine and stills lenses, and why you might want to choose one over the other. I've compared cine lenses on this channel, and we'll use the Sigma Cine 35mm T1.5 vs The Sigma 35mm DG DN as an example.
Cine lenses are popular among filmmakers and photojournalists because they offer a unique perspective. They're also more expensive than still lenses, but they're worth it if you want to capture unique footage or photographs. If you're not sure which lens to choose, watch this video to find out the differences between cine and stills lenses and decide which one is right for you!

    Awesome video. I recently finished DP work for a friend using his cinema lenses and they were great. However, I've been doing photography for many years and have a bunch of stills glass. Now that I'm doing more video for myself I'm looking into the differences, this helped a lot. I use Dehancer to make my digital look less sharp/clean and it works well, but still not the same.

    Don’t invest in cine lenses unless you know you’re gonna like the character or lack thereof in them, among other things. Unless you’re investing in a big name like Cooke or something of that caliber, they generally depreciate relatively considerably. I’ve bought lenses that were optically quite neat perfect, similar to Sigma Art for instance, but now I want something either even more perfect or something with lots of aesthetically pleasing character. Filters don’t do a great job of imitating imperfection, they just degrade the image. Some filters cost more than or close to what one vintage prime costs, like an AI Nikkor for example.

    Great comparison. I can see the appeal of a cine lens in a certain context though it's clearly not useful to everyone. That being said, I think anamorphic lenses are probably more interesting for all kinds of filming. I'll probably invest in that. Thanks for the clear explanation!

  • @CaleMcCollough
    @CaleMcCollough4 ай бұрын

    I primarily do green screen virtual production, so for me I require f/5.6, so a fast lens doesn't help me, I need a sharper lens with autofocus and lens compensation and focus breathing compensation with FX30, which can only be done with Sony lenses. It's really important to be able to hit every focal length with green screen to match focal length of the background camera or 3D rendered scene, else it can break the illusion, digital zoom does not work. For the green screen you'll be hard pressed to see the difference a cinema lens and a mirrorless lens with focus breathing compensation on the FX3/FX30. Any lens can look Hollywood level when used right. For me the Sony 10-18mm f/4 and 18-105mm f/4 is the perfect green screen lens for my FX30 and ZV-E10. That is 15-152.5mm focal length, which covers the entire range of what you need for green screen. I'm saving up for an FX3 and Sirui 35mm T2.9 1.6x anamorphic lens. I never thought in a million years I'd ever own one of those but it's dialed in by summer.

    I impulse bought the cheapest cine lens I could find off ebay, a Rokinon 35mm T1.5 for $160 on ebay partly because I wanted to get into cine lenses for fun and partly to get some practice manually focusing on a gimbal. I don't have a camera with good autofocus, and the Rokinon came in absolute clutch for the first commercial shoot I took this on as I needed to focus on specific things at a specific timing that my other prime couldn't do. Being able to use the focus gear instead of the stupid gear strap thing that comes with the RS2 Pro that never worked for me was such a convenience. Also for it being so cheap, I was surprised how clean and free of fringing/chromatic aberration it was. For what I am doing at the moment though, I feel that is all I really need for cine lenses until I get to the point where I'll potentially be making higher-budget, cinematic stuff. My wallet and I are scared for the time I get sucked into the cine lens rabbit hole though.

    @@KofiYeboah the 24mm, 35mm, and 75mm are all out rn but there is a limited supply so they aren’t always in stock. The 45mm and 20mm are coming out later this year. I have my eyes on them mainly for gimbal use.

    5:45 That's why I feel like a friggin wizard with my 20€ 25mm* f1.8 c mount lens. It has the swirliest bokeh and is technically a video lens 😂 ...and it cost me 20 bucks, so 🤷🏻‍♂️ hahaha *69km full frame equivalent on my bmpcc og

    @@KofiYeboah It's actually a "neewer" or sth I ordered off amazon. It all started whith the quest to get the biggest aperture at the lowest price possible. For I am broke. Started looking native, switched to *any mount I can adapt to* as soon as I saw the prices. First one I bought was a "gazechimp" (that's the brand name, I 💩you not) 50mm f1.4 c mount for next to nothing. Weird, stupid, yet surprisingly usable. Definitely lots of character. Mostly using my Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 (with speedbooster effectively f2.0ish) now and the Laowa 10mm f2.0 zero diszortion (native m4/3) for wide shots. The latter is pretty funky. On a regular m4/3 sensor it looks positively weird in the corners, since it actually has *zero fish eye distortion.* That doesn't mean it doesn't have distortion though, remember the original counterstrike game, when someone walked right next to you? That kinda weird flattened out "there is no actual eyeball @work here so enjoy the trip" kinda distortion. That. Fortunately the bmpcc has a tiny sensor, so exactly that part is cut off. Gives it a unique look that suggests a way bigger sensor. Anyway, sorry for the wall of text but maybe this could be a fun video idea. Maybe you have gone through all the quirky/DIY stuff yet, maybe you haven't... I get you're a professional but hey, sometimes it's that odd spice that makes the stew 😄🤷🏻‍♂️
