Chucky - Season 2 Episode 1 "Halloween II" Review

Ойын-сауық

Chucky is back for season 2 and things look like they're gonna be wackier and crazier than ever. Part of that is intriguing...while a large part of me is very worried.

Not every Chucky movie necessarily exists in the Child's Play universe. Seed of Chucky shows them making a movie adaptation of the events of Bride of Chucky, like a true crime film. As far as we know that is the only movie that exists in both real-life and within the Chucky canon.

We knew the movie within the movie was canon and we know that glen and Glenda are coming into the show. So we are coming into the season accepting that Seed exists. Feels more like episode constraint and Don really wanting to cram everything in and set up the season for us on the first go. The cliffhanger bit was something I didn’t mind either. We knew we were getting a season 2 as soon as the first episode premiered. So the cliffhanger felt earned and like a “please trust me” from Don to his fans. And honestly I trust him. I don’t recall if both teen actors are gay or straight. But the kids acting still has a lot of room for growth and maybe the scenes could’ve been directed better from Don. Maybe if there are some cringe scenes, he will edit them out by the time the next episodes drop. I don’t mind teen acting , I was able to get past Lexi in the previous season. Don did a great job with season 1 and I’m looking forward to what he does this season .

Chucky Season 2 scene: Devon: "Well, she looks a little like the bride of Chucky. Remember that movie? Jake: "Yeah, with Jennifer Tilly. Who we know really is the bride of Chucky, Tiffany Valentine." Seed of Chucky scene with reporter after malfunction ruins scene: "We're here in Hollywood where production is underway on the new horror flick 'Chucky Goes Psycho.' The film tells the urban legend of Chucky and Tiffany, two dolls supposedly possessed by serial killers. The dolls were found at the scene of real-life murders that remain unsolved to this day." After that part comes the scene where Jennifer Tilly is literally dressed like a bride with Chucky in her lap talking about not getting Erin Brockovich. Given that so much time is unaccounted for between movies, with Jennifer Tilly (as a character) not being referenced in terms of her career again, who's to say they didn't finish the movie? And even if they didn't, it seems entirely plausible that the plot about Tiffany being the bride (hence Tilly in the movie-in-the-movie being dressed as a bride) would have been available knowledge. It seems like a poor wording choice. Or a deliberate choice with a double meaning. "Remember that movie" after saying "she looks like the bride of Chucky" can lead one to believe the movie is called that, but we only think that because we know about the actual movie called "Bride of Chucky.: In universe, it the movie could still be called "Chucky Goes Psycho" and they understand that Tiffany was Chucky's bride in it. In their world, the line in th3 exchange would come off as, "Well, she looks a little like the bride of Chucky. Remember "Chucky Goes Psycho?" So the way it's written could be meant as a other little meta treat for the fans where they didn't anticipate the confusion they might cause. Or at worst, Mancini could seemly have just retconned it, though even that wouldn't be needed. He could easily explain it away with something as simple as that Tiffany (having possessed Jennifer Tilly) finished the movie and due to her ego had the title changed to Bride of Chucky since Tiffany loved Bride of Frankenstein and is every bit the narcissist Chucky is. And it NEVER mentions that any other movies that exist in our world exist in the show.

if you actually watched the movies you'd know that chucky movies are canon in the series from seed of chucky. So chucky being a horror character in their universe isn't a far off concept at all. Basically the same concept of urban legends in our world with blood mary, candyman etc.

To me personally, I feel like I would've liked it better if they would've focused on the loss of Junior more. Or flat out not killed him at all in S1. Jake and him had a bit of a rocky relationship, but he was close friends with Devon. Lexy's boyfriend. Would've been nice to see some emotional payoff or grief. It could come later but it's still unfortunate. Especially because I felt like they had so many potential storylines to go to with him but they instead just chose to axe him. Like, I'm just imagining Tiffany and him not exactly being on team Chucky but also not being on team good guys either. Just their own chaotic and slightly confused faction. But alas, spilled milk. No use crying over it. As for this episode, I'm not sure if people are acting bizarre or if there's some sort of underlying mystery. Gary reacting weird to the other doll but not Chucky and his device seemed off. And we didn't see much of Gary or the foster parents so while the moment was shocking, it wasn't too emotionally impactful. I'm surprised Chucky didn't try to play the long game with Gary since he knew he was close with Jake. Or just, snatch the device away so he could still get Jake, Lexy, and Devon. The therapist also seems oddly passive aggressive, and it seems like the Church originally being where Charles stayed isn't a coincidence. Hoping all of this potential setup has a good payoff. Pretty okay first episode. Not great. Not terrible either.

I’m with you. I can’t stand when people who haven’t experienced traumatic grief and know nothing about it try to write it. It’s debilitating at times. You don’t just forget that person out of the blue one day and you’re just peachy afterwards. It’s a permanent scar you’re stuck with the rest of your life. It really rubs me the wrong way as someone who has suffered multiple traumatic losses. Especially when we had such an amazing portrayal of grief and trauma earlier this year with Stranger Things. I get that Mancini loves his camp, and I usually do too, but I really don’t think grief is something that can or should be half-assedly written. It’s real stuff. IMO they shot themselves in the foot by killing off Junior, he was the best of the kid actors and had way more potential storylines. If they don’t bring him back even for flashbacks this season, that’s horrendous writing.

The only way I can see them writing themselves out of that corner with the Bride of Chucky reference is that Tiffany decided to make her experiences from the events in that film into a movie within the series’s universe. That would explain why Andy isn’t considered a “character”, but you would think they’d connect the dots when Jennifer Tilly showed up in league with Chucky in the first season. It’s fucking convoluted, and they really shouldn’t have referenced it to begin with, because it just makes a mess.

I can overlook it myself, but it's the same problem I had with the Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode Halloween reference in the first season, cause there was Michaels mask in the evidence locker in Bride and shit, and Ronny Yu did Freddy vs. Jason after Bride of Chucky where he laid out that Michael/Leatherface/Freddy/Jason Easter egg, so I just assumed Don thought of them all as vaguely inhabiting the same space but now they're talking about how much they love Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween so now I guess Michaels just firmly fictional. Sucks that amazing scene in the opening of Bride of Chucky is just completely non-canon audience winking (although I argue that since they made the real Chucky murders into movies starring Jennifer Tilly, they probably could've just made movies based on the real Michael Myers and cast Jamie Lee Curtis, but idk man I just wish Jake and Devon talked about something like Florence Pugh in Midsommar instead so the whole thing could've been avoided entirely).

@@Lusciouslysorry that’s a really good point. I think the fact that it kinda came out of nowhere when that was a film they’ve probably watched as it’s based on a killer originally from their town that it bends the logic to a breaking point for me. The fact that they didn’t make a mention of it when Tilly was the celebrity guest at Frankenstein just makes this scene seem off. I should have mentioned that I enjoyed the episode, it was just that scene in particular stood out to me. Like even tho I do like the direction he’s taken since he got in control the dude just has lots of continuity errors where it’s annoying. Like first the thing with calling the police on chucky cause it was the mom of Nica but now it’s Tiffany, the dolls apparently the moment they wake up are filled with flesh already instead of having to wait to become human, in the trailer Glen questions that Tiffany is a murderer when they obviously know she is one, and now with the movies somehow existing like … seriously it gets so tiring.

A bit scared myself that the show is going back to Seed (reintroducing Glenn/Glenda). I do understand that some people love Seed, so it's nice they get to have fun with the references and such. @@michaelwinans4853 @Michael Winans Way NOT to apply Occam's razor. Simplest explanation is that you made an assumption based on out-of-universe knowledge and a misinterpretation of the language used. I think I made it pretty clear with direct quotes from the show and Seed, and the explanation in my fourth paragraph. No jumping to explain inconsistencies here. Inconsistencies abound. Timeframes for process luke becoming human, how and when soul transfers can occur, which of the split souls knows what and how, etc. A lot literally can be waived away based on the fact that magic has no set laws to call upon for rulings on those matters, as well the fact that long time-lapses occur without specifics to aid or hurt any conclusions. But even then things still don't all seem to always add up. And while personal taste can account for how much people vary on letting it affect their love and appreciation of the films, this is more of a case of you trying hard not to see how you were just wrong. Simplest explanation: you misunderstood and made assumptions.

I like like the slow burn feel the early episodes of the show have; so like this being one of them, I don't really let it bother me. I liked the couple of homages they threw in here and I love that they had the balls to kill like a 6 year old on primetime television. it's always ballsy to see a kid die. they did it with class. shows Chucky is actually about it for once. first kid(Oliver was a teenager, if he was 3 years older we'd be cheering Freedy or Jason on killing them). But like I get it. the writings sloppy. but it's also cable television; not every series imo has writers on the caliber of SOA or Bates Motel. I like the kinda broad approach he's done and it's good to see a horror icon have a successful show. I however will say, as someone who personally have overcame addictions in my past, I can NOT buy Lexi's half ass addict look or acting. and I also can't, as a fan, back up Don's liberties his taken with Andy's character. Personally, how underwhelming his been since part 2 has been insulting. but like I come to see Chucky make quips and kill and honestly this show delivers.

I have a theory (probably not unique to me) that the therapist is tied to Chucky somehow. She seems kind of off, and just sat there while Lexi’s mom emotionally abused her daughter in a therapy session. If so, that could resolve at least some of your contrivance issues. I took the “remember that movie” line as (in-Universe) a reference to “Chucky Goes Pyscho” and in the movie the Tiffany analogue was known as the “Bride of Chucky.” However, the fact that there was ANY completed Chucky movie causes all sorts of plot holes, since presumably it would have come up any time in the subsequent movies or episodes where someone claimed the Chucky doll was alive (eg, in Cult someone would have suggested to Nica that she was just hallucinating after seeing the movie). Head canon until the show ruins it: the movie never came out and it’s mostly forgotten but Devon, Jake, and Lexi read about it and previously discussed it. It’s the least ridiculous option.

Brads voice may not be as deep as scream guys voice but still unsettling lol. Also love the whole breaking the 4th wall with the bride of Chucky reference. I saw it as a nod breaking the 4th wall to the fans than saying all the movies are Canon to the universe itself. I respect Cody's opinion but I do think he's overthinking it imo but its whatever. But anyway lol. At first I was sad about the beginning but no way Andy is dead plus they confirmed they never found a body we all know that rule of shows and movies if you never find a body.

When they referred to Bride of Chucky I had the exact math equations going on in my head. So if they know of that movie how come no one in the SHOW UNIVERSE knew what he was and what he was possibly capable of. If this is going on WHAT THEY NEED TO DO is wrap it up like the original scream 3 tv series was supposed to be where the show was actually a show within a show after all and then realize chucky isn’t a character but a real killer

Great review as always, Cody. I for the life of me cannot understand all of the amazingly positive reviews on this series. Maybe it's just not what I'm looking for. It feels too after-school special-ish with that Lifetime movie feel with overly silly plot (multiple Chuckys for one) and mediocre acting. I was looking for something a little more brutal and gritty like the first 3 Child's Play movies. Also, the fact that they have to shove certain matters down your throat in the first 10 minutes of this episode as they hammered to death all last season is just an excuse for agenda pushing as well. Also, mish-mashing every previous character from the movie series just to have them in the tv series doesn't do it for me either. It doesn't pull the plot together, just disjoints it further. Again, so far not at all what I am looking for.

Don Mancini is a HACK that should've NEVER been given full creative control over the IP. Tom Holland, director of the first film, is truly the one that turned Chucky into the iconic killer doll. Yet he doesn't get the credit. Mancini came up with the initial concept, story---but Tom Holland fleshed it out and made changes that made sense in the first film. Don Mancini is a fraud and constantly shoehorns his personal, political views in these terrible Chucky films/shows
