The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

teenagers had made "The Twist" a mega hit during the summer of 1960 and the summer of '61, teens were still twisting away to "Let's Twist Again"...But by the fall of 1961, as seen here, many teens had already moved on to other dances like "The Fly" and "The Pony". The resurgence of the "The Twist" in late '61 / early '62 was brought back to the #1 spot by listeners / twisters of all ages.

Didn't most of these shows require them to lip sync on air 🤔 I know many and definitely the Ed Sullivan Show because The Beatles mentioned having to do so just a year or two later. If you're gonna make a statement like that at least be right, though no denying his talent.

Regarding the 50s, look at films, video footage and photos of that era & you'll see America at its best. (I'm not American.) As for the 60s, the excitement of those times - as in the global Beatlemania & the thrilling race to the moon - that decade is hard to beat. The first of Chubby's two appearances on the Sullivan show. I haven't seen this one before. The dancers are from the Broadway musical, "Do-Re-Mi", and this show also featured stars Phil Silvers and Nancy Walker performing scenes from the musical. Also appearing was Matt Munro singing his hit, "My Kind Of Girl", which would be another good one to post.

@@mrob75 Hi Mario! Not that I know of. I look up each episode listing individually on a TV episode guide website, which I can't link because links in messages get flagged for spam. Hope you can find it! It lists most of the acts that were on every episode. You have to search by act instead of show name now.

The twice came from Tampa, Florida. A dance made by black teenagers that goes back to the Congo. Central African Congo dancing is known to have a lot of hip movements. You can also see the influences on modern dances like the 2010s hit hip hop song walk it out.

I was a teenager when Chubby Checker burst onto the scene. The Twist was the rage for a while and his spinoff Twist records were successful too. It didn't get as much notice as the Twist but Checker's Pony Time was/is rockin' as well.

Cant but help compare that only two years previously to this show, Elvis had been filmed from the waist up because of his hip gyrations! Now look at what he achieved by opening the door to the new movement of rock and roll! Well done Chubby Checker, you owe it all to Elvis!

Thank you very much for posting this wonderful videos from Chubby Checker! I do understand he was not the original composer nor singer of the song 'The Twist' (by Hall Of Famer Hank Ballard), but why has he not been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as well? He so deserves it! Love and respect from Mexico!
