The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

teenagers had made "The Twist" a mega hit during the summer of 1960 and the summer of '61, teens were still twisting away to "Let's Twist Again"...But by the fall of 1961, as seen here, many teens had already moved on to other dances like "The Fly" and "The Pony". The resurgence of the "The Twist" in late '61 / early '62 was brought back to the #1 spot by listeners / twisters of all ages.

Didn't most of these shows require them to lip sync on air 🤔 I know many and definitely the Ed Sullivan Show because The Beatles mentioned having to do so just a year or two later. If you're gonna make a statement like that at least be right, though no denying his talent.

"Let's twist again like we did last summer" - INSTANT NOSTALGIA for those lucky enough to have enjoyed our precious youth during the Fabulous Fifties and the Swinging Sixties! "Let's twist again like we did last year"!
The twist was a dance everyone could do, whether young or old. What a great time that was?😀🎶👍
I remember when my mom was living she would always listen to this song and do the twist and I learn to dance 💃 I will be 55 years old September 25
The King of the Twist. I love Chubby Checker.
Just amazing incredible dancer & song that Chubby Checkers performed& it’s still going strong & may it continue too ❤ Yas Uk 😊
What a great showman. Grew up to my uncle & aunt spinning this 45 record & teaching us kids to do the twist. First dance I ever learned. Chubby always a pleasant performer & everybody loved him!❤
How many other people have 18 of Chubby's albums and even more singles. Guess what. I love every one. I live in the UK so haven't seen this video before but it really bought a smile to my face. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should hang their heads in shame Chubby should have been inducted years ago. He's bought nothing but joy to the world.

Boy, I just noticed that Chubby Checker sounds exactly like Jackie Wilson here. No autotune, no lip syncing (you can he's breathing a little heavy), that's a sign that it's REAL!.......just pure talent!

He was in fact lip syncing. Singers on the Ed Sullivan show would just lip sync over their music as they performed whatever. There are no cords for the mic to be connected to because they didn't want a mic to interfere with the performance

The only record to reach No1 twice on the Billboard Hot 100
its my understanding that The Twist was already a #1 record & had fallen off the charts but on the strength of this performance returned to the #1 position on the charts. Lets Twist Again was a massive follow up for Chubby. The Sullivan show could boost a record up the charts then. It was an American Sunday night institution!!

Actually, what happened was, this belatedly caught on among adults, and that helped propel the record back up the charts. But this performance certainly didn't hurt.
I met Chubby in 1987. He performed at a club in my town. It was a dream come true. I had to fight the manager of the club to get a pic with him and his autograph. But I got it.
I've never been into dancing at all. I'm a lifelong music lover, but dancing has never been my thing. However, I think the twist is the best dance of all time. So cool, so rock and roll!

This was just the BEGINNING of an exciting, unforgettable decade - the Swinging Sixties: Swinging London, Beatlemania, the 1967 Summer of Love in San Francisco and carefree times, when compared to the doom-laden beginning of the 21st century!

@@raulishnikovdancer2346 The Fabulous Fifties & the Swinging Sixties. Those were the BEST years of the second half of the 20th century. Regarding the 50s, look at films, video footage and photos of that era & you'll see America at its best. (I'm not American.) As for the 60s, the excitement of those times - as in the global Beatlemania & the thrilling race to the moon - that decade is hard to beat. Unfortunately, those times led to excesses the consequencies of which are being witnessed in our times, such as anything goes in the way people dress.

Ballard had a minor hit with The Twist in '59, but Chubby Checker and Parkway Records milked it for all it was worth. It made CC an international star. When Hank Ballard was asked how he felt about CC's phenomenal success singing HIS record, he said something to the effect of, "Are you kidding ... I LOVE Chubby Checker - I collect royalties every time he sings my song!.
One of my treasured things from my late father is a collection of photos from when he worked as a photographer for TV news & a news paper. There’s one of Chubby, when he came to Australia, performing on stage. Another good one is of my cousin, about 4-5yo, sitting on the knee of Lorne Greene.
