The Twist was the first time that adults got involved in a teenage dance craze. My parents, who were in their 40s then, eagerly participated. My mother actually went to an Arthur Murray Dance Studio (which this man is from) with one of her friends to have a Twist lesson in 1961.

Best dance ever. A physical therapist once told me The Twist is also one of the best exercises for your body. Our YMCA/Silver Sneakers class does this dance/exercise occasionally and it occurred to me that there ought to be a twist contest before the baby boomers are all gone. Looking for one in the Midwest. This needs to happen. Please HELP find one.

Hey there! I've tried having a look into it but with not much luck. I'll keep trying to see if I can find anything for you. What I would recommend is hosting your own! The best way to bring things back is to start them up again. If nobody attempts anything then nothing will ever continue. I imagine it wouldn't be that difficult to host such a thing. People are always eager to try new things.

This dance - and its unlimited variations, bring such smiles and memories. In grade three music class, the teacher had me jump up on her desk and demonstrate it when everyone else was glued to their seats - a teacher wouldn't dare ask of that today! Loved it, and danced through the lunch period instead of eating as people from the halls spilled inside and joined. This moment I paid homage to storyline wise in my upcoming movie "The Devil's Tail" (2020) with four licensed twist tracks of "Steven Garrick and His Party Twisters." (The trailer is posted here as that title) ... so wonderful reading the comment from stuffy321 that his parents are shown dancing, and that they still do the moves. They're not the only ones...

What's especially interesting about this video for me is that these dancers are all definitely adults. Not high school kids, not college-aged kids, and not even past college-age. Adults What's more, these adults seem to have so much enthusiasm, glamor, and talent. If I had been alive at the time of this video I could not dismiss them as has-beens or wannabes.

This has its parallel in restaurants. In the 50's and 60's it was adults working in restaurants, not kids. Two married adults making minimum wage in those days could afford to buy a car, a house, and put their kids through school.

1961 was the year I left school and it was the first dance ever to drag all the boys onto the dance floor who were previously self conscious when it came to more formal dancing. The twist eventually evolved into what we see on the dance floor today. More about self expression than formal dancing.

The music was wonderful to listen to, be with that special someone, dance to your joy . Three were different dances that you do with in reason . I really truly honestly did ,still do love the music from back then . What they call music is rap . When,if I happen it it's a turn off to me . Reasons being # 1. It's too loud . #2 you may not understand what they are saying .

The Twist was written by Hank Ballard in 1958. It was the b-side of " Teardrops On Your Letter". Neither side a or b did very well on the charts. Chubby Checker( Ernest Evans ) recorded it twice. In 1960 and 1962- the later one had a slightly different arrangement. It is the only record by the same artist to ever reach #1 in two separate years.

I just learned that this footage was from an Australian version of Bandstand, which I am not familiar versus the Dick Clark version. But am impressed. Thanks for presenting this.

That Twist got more mad and outrageous in 62 / 63! Mum (born 1922) considered it as VULGAR. HER Mum (born 1898!!!) LOVED the Twist and DANCED IT!😃👍😂 Everyone did the Twist then. A Rage, that conquered the world like ANY other dance! From SF to Berlin, from North pole to Fire islands. Except perhaps the Charleston

The dances they did back then, along with their diets explains why most everyone was slimmer than they are today. It was not very common to see so many obese people back then.

Haha, I was a very young girl. My Mom was watching the Today Show and they were explaining the Twist: You're supposed to be drying your behind with a towel back and forth while putting out a cigarette with your foot. Better explanation than the proper one here :-). For some reason I remember it was around the time Marilyn Monroe died.

My grandma taught me to twist when I was young. My grandparents would always tell me stories about how, on a friday afternoon, they gave their children over to their own parents and spent the whole weekend in local village-discos/clubs (in east germany, mind you) twisting till their feet fell off. They only went back to pick up the kids on a sunday lol.
