One of the only Indian inspired songs in gaming gets the restoration treatment. The only other I know of is The Temples from LittleBigPlanet. So brew yourself a cup of Assam tea and go on this musical journey. Let me know in the comments if you have any more stellar examples of Indian culture in gaming. This is a commission from @tssf . This is not part of a project to restore the Chrono Trigger soundtrack, however, Mathew is restoring the entire soundtrack, so check out his channel if you want to see more Chrono Trigger restorations! Special thanks to Mathew and @crimsonzn5188 for providing some sounds and providing feedback for improvement during the live stream. If you wish to commission me to restore a track, message me via any of the social media links on my channel. It is $50 for a single track, provided I can find the patches needed to restore it.

Footage recorded on the SNES9x emulator using the NTSC (RF) Filter and xBRZ shader
Composed by Yasunori Mitsuda. Recreated by me. This was made possible by locating the original instrument samples from workstation keyboards and drum machines before they were put into the game and rebuilding the soundtrack from the ground up, applying some modern mixing techniques along the way to lift the veil of 16bit compression and create an updated listening experience. Sound sources:
Korg M1 VST (Bonang), Best Service Classical Choir, E-Mu Classic Series Volume 2 (Tabla), Bob Clearmountain Percussion & Bass (Tambourine), Sound Ideas Sampler Library (Sitar), Masterbits Monster Pack 12,000 (Bass)
Special thanks to this document for providing the location of most of the sounds: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Probably one of the greatest video game songs of all time. I don't think its possible to get tired of hearing this. Sounds wonderful, thanks Sam!
So, the gamelan is actually a set or ensemble of different instruments used in traditional Javanese music. However, the pingy instrument we hear at the beginning (an throughout the track) is most likely a bonang, which is a cradled kettle gong, used in the gamelan. It has quite a distinctive sound, and I'm surprised how different it sounds when comparing the compressed and uncompressed samples side-by-side. It seems that the high-range frequencies were almost totally cut off, giving it a muddier, bassier quality. Uncompressed, it's a much brighter sound.

The KORG M1 patch name is Gamelan, but it features no other instruments in the patch iirc, so that definitely causes confusion lol

@@witapepsi Oh, I know how that is! I spent way too many hours in Encarta back in the day, so that's how I know a bonang is part of a gamelan, so when I see these synthesizers with an instrument called "gamelan", I just want to facepalm!

Listening to a few different gamelan instruments, I think it might actually be a kenong? Hard to tell though because kenongs are mostly just bigger bonangs, but kenongs are the most "iconic" gamelan instrument, so it would make sense that that's what's featured in the Korg M1 if it's just titled "gamelan". But that's just based off a few brief comparisons I made, as well as deductive reasoning.
Had the pleasure of watching you create this with Matthew's feedback. Thank you for creating incredible remasters of these cultural treasures.

A magnificent song for one of the best games of all time, in my opinion.
You can tell it's right at first blush, there's no way these are not the exact samples. Incredible. Imagine tracking down something when all you have to work with is only the echo of noises that sounded almost 30 years ago.
Now what can I do with all these sudden goosebumps?

Retain heat with marginally greater efficiency?
This part of the game was such a memorable and magical experience. And, of course, the thing that topped it all off was the incredible music.
Jesus fucking christ, the first sitar chord made me break down in tears. Incredible.
Oh shit the mad man did it
A restoration as magical as the Kingdom of Zeal itself!
Rarely does a piece of music put tears in my eyes. This had me crying. Great Cover. 15/10.
Wow this is really an amazing mix and instantly brought me back to my childhood. Thank you as always Sam!
The mix is so clean. Incredible stuff
Beatiful!! This is the best remaster of this music in entire youtube! Congrats Sam Miller
I've been waiting for this one! Fantastic job, Sam!

The Legendary RPG! I'm looking foward to the other songs! 💪🔥
So mystical and jamming! Love this!
I never considered that the samples were from 90's workstation keyboards - really neat! Great job!
there's at least some music that reminds me of this in "granstream saga"
this is a masterpiece
This. Yes.
This is great
Sublime gracias por la restauración
Firstly, thank you for recreating this timeless treasure. Second, there's a crossroads of the youtube internet hole where folks all around the world and write down save points of how their life has gone up until that point, all united by a rather long youtube loop of this track. Now that you've conquered this, could you consider making a similar-ly long loop of this wonderful track remake? I know this is forward, and rude of someone you don't know, but it'd be terrific to see your channel host one of these crossroads where all hearts meet, and to by extension get to experience all the talent displayed on your channel.
You, sir, makes magic >v>
thanks
Magnificent!

There's just something *timeless* about this theme. One of the best in an entire generation. "Let me know in the comments if you have any more stellar examples of Indian culture in gaming." Definitely check out the Indivisible OST, they have a playlist with some of it on KZread. Hiroki Kikuta (Secret of Mana) worked on it. kzread.info/head/PLfNfGfrxIwgIpTYVbKongwhZ-BI7Uw65p
Korg M1 hits
Sounds like Tokyo Drift in the beginning...
I bought Final Fantasy Chronicles recently (which comes with Chrono Trigger) and a component cable for my ps2. It's a great game, but if only the music from the game sounded as crystal-clear as this.
the choir doesnt sound right at all
Love it!! Thanks for this. 🫶🏽🫶🏽👌🏽👌🏽🫶🏽🕒
