Fantastic episode! Would love to see you try to create a character in this universe. mimicking the art style and such. Either way love the content.

Honestly, Brandon has fully convinced me pixel art is the best art. I might start to do pixel art of my own.
Ah, the difference in needs for the palettes between a portrait and a sprite is something that I need to keep in mind too. I get a little obsessed with accuracy, and it's hard to remember that it's not always a good thing, even in pixels.

Sprite analysis of my favorite game of all time? Yes please!
I’m down for a feature length documentary from you on CT and Super Metroid sprites.
Sprite analysis is the best series on KZread!
So detailed and helpful! Especially appreciated the comparison of the portraits in the sprite colors.
Chrono Trigger is one of my all time favorite games, I'm glad that it's getting attention here!
I would love to see a Sprite analysis of Hyper Light Drifter by you

Interesting! Never thought about high saturation and high contrast is actually crucial to low resolution art since it helps creating division!
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS!! Chrono Trigger is SOOO good!!
Great video. I just binge-watched all your videos this weekend. Awesome work!
Another reason for brighter sprites could be so they contrast better against dark game backgrounds. Seeing as the sprites are small on the screen, they need to pop if they're going to contrast well against different environments.
Excellent video as always ! Your love and knowledge for pixel art really shows !
So much valuable information ... in such a short video. I love your content!! Thank you!! Keep it up! :-)
I love the art style in this game, you can take a look at the fire emblem series if you have the time, they got some fantastic portraits and ofc pixel art sprites/animations in general

@@BJGpixel The Gameboy Advance ones are the pinnacle of the series’ pixel art. Make sure you have footage in 60FPS if you’re looking up animations online, some of the animations for critical hits and other high action moments in battle use 60FPS single-frame flickering effects to create incredible optical illusions. Older games in the series might be interesting to look at to see the evolution, but are a...bit of a mixed bag spritework-wise and later games transitioned to trad art portraits and 3D models for battles, and did so a bit clumsily at first, which obviously aren’t focus of this channel (though they kept pixelated sprites for the tactical map screen for a WHILE afterwards as a callback to nostalgia)
Angelique is another game on the SNES whose character portraits really stood out to me. Looking back they are not as special or especially well translated like chrono trigger's, but the game used much less detailed character sprites and instead put quite a lot of focus on the anime like character portraits.
This was amazing as per usual. Thank you!!!
Ever since I started watching your videos, I look for the fact that most character sprites are high in saturation to stand out from the background art. I love the realism of desaturated textures and tiles, but simplicity and visibility is crucial for sprites, making it easy on the eyes when playing a game. But it's really neat to see more complexity in the colour palette for the portraits, giving you a more true sense of what that character is truly supposed to look like. Very nice analysis and for such an amazing game!
Yay a new video! I practically learn pixel art from these! Are there any other resources for pixel artists to use?
Yes, I am late. That said, with all the calls for analyses of different games, I would like one as well. My beloved Golden Sun (the GBA ones, preferably both, I myself am leaning more to The Lost Age if I were to pick one) would suit such an analysis very well.
Great video! Been a designer for a few years, but never thought about color palettes too much. For pixel art, do you recommend following a limited color palette? Or is this more of a preference?
@BJGpixel
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think limited palettes are certainly worth trying, at least as an exercise or experiment! Low colour counts often force you to repurpose colours in ways you may not have considered otherwise, so that can be a good lesson in working with restriction - and I think the simplicity of a limited palette also suits pixel art particularly well :D
this info is wasy too valuable!! thank you so much!
I just want to thank you for putting so much effort into your videos, you even had to buy a capture card and everything, or is there another way?
Very cool and informativ video. Also love your way of presenting content 😄👍
Ok this channel needs and deserves more subs
You just made my day!
Aside from characters that have a clear resemblance with Drabonball cast, Lucca looks a lot like Arale, again from Toriyama ;)
sees new vid from this channel.. decides to keep it square for the foreseeable future
The GBA fire emblem games have some amazing spritework to analyze. Make sure you have 60 FPS on when looking up footage tho, or you’ll miss some of the amazing critical animations.
Really, really good takes.
Please note while viewing graphics from Chrono Trigger that Square was aware that the game's visuals would be stretched from 8:7 to 4:3, and made the assets to fit.

I really appreciate this video, as I've been studying Chrono Trigger's sprites recently. However, I'd love to see more analysis of sprite sizing for GBA, if one were to make RPG sprites for example, how big is too big? How small before too much detail is sacrificed?
super informative
yes this is amazing! i wish you could do one with breath of fire 3 or 4
I was hoping for a speed paint this round. still neat though!
Hey, can you do a video on how to fill in blank spaces in art? Or how to pixel foliage?

@@_thestarsarelookingatyou And they managed to fit all that into only 20 hours of gameplay. That's quite low considering the usual length of RPGs, then and now.
Uhh, you're probably getting bombarded with these requests, so sorry about adding another one, but... Suikoden 2 is a love letter to pixel art. Everything about that game. I'd love to see your take on it. :D
Akira Toriyama has a character generator that does the work for him I am 100% sure, he made few variations and then he just mixes and matches :D All of his character look alike :D
Final Fantasy IV or VI next!
Could u do a analysis over kirby dreamland for the gameboy and how it uses anti aliasing 🥺👉👈
I was trying out chrono trigger the pther day for the first time and i started recommending it to all my friends. So when i saw this vid i clicked it faster than the speed of sound lol
Best sprite channel. I’ve been looking for good tips and tutorials for fantasy esque sprite stuff (really loved final fantasy tactics advanced) You get a lot of not authentic stuff researching it. Any more resources? Would love to see some hd2d style stuff. Also, no Pokémon :( ?
Please make the video that analyze the sprite itself... or the background... Background in CT game is awesome, it looks good even by today standard.

Yeah that's a strong recommend from me dawg :D I know your backlog is getting longer after we also discussed adding Final Fantasy VII to it as well - but if you're interested in 16-bit-era RPGs, Chrono Trigger is one of the best! Really fun battle system, and great storylines with some time travel mixed in for good measure :)

Hello Greer of Brandon james
Hi I’m an animator and I’m writing an animator basics book. I’m doing a pixel section, but I know nothing about pixel art. So I could use a couple tips from you. Thanks
not to put my opinion out there but what about an sprite analysis of the ps1/arcade jojo fighting game heratige for the future
Do you have a comment on the character portraits compared to their in-game designs? I feel like there is a bit of disconnect there for some of them, like they don't really represent the same person.
Although pixel art games are back on the indie scene, very few look as good as Chrono Trigger, Trials of Mana or Yoshi's Island. Even Octopath Traveler and Dragon Quest XI's 2D mode, made by the same company that produced those games, don't look as good. (I mean Octopath looks good but it's the 2D/3D effects, not the pixel art itself imho.) It looks like a lot of the know-how, knowledge and techniques acquired during the SNES/Genesis era pixel artists has been lost through desuetude and is only now being rediscovered.
can you talk about earthbound next?
