what kills me is that when i listened to sour for the first time and had no idea about any of this drama (i'm too old and had zero pop culture context of olivia and didn't even know who sabrina or josh were) i appreciated that it was a breakup album that didn't seem to have a lot of internalized misogyny or blame the girl who her ex dated. it was wild to see how the internet demonized sabrina out of all of that!! i feel truly horrible for her.

If you’ve paid attention to her other openers, the only ones who actually come close when it comes to popularity might be Paramore. Taylor will not choose someone who will outshine her. I met Sabrina Carpenter several years ago when I was working at Lush in Pennsylvania. She apparently had a concert in a neighboring town that night. I would like to add that most Disney stars have a contract saying what they can and can’t say about other “ex disney stars”. She did saying several times that her intention was never to bring another woman down, and that was probably as much as her pr and Disney team would let her say.

You're trying to say without say that "maybe the song wasnt even about Sabrina but Olivia just let it all happen and Sabrina get criticized for the buzz and hype it would get her". It's disappointing you either ignored or didn't realize Joshua disclosed that he was sexually abused as a child. That's such a key part of the story for me and a big explanation for why he's seemingly gone down a potentially very harmful path with the Church he's joined. I do worry for him a lot. If anyone lost here, it was Josh but no one really seems to acknowledge or factor in the fact he was abused. I think because people are either scared by or feel that boys who were sexually abused are somehow inconvenient. Particularly in this narrative where Olivia and Sabrina are girlbossed and Josh is the loser who held them both back. I hope he's doing OK.

As someone who is a stan of all three Olivia, Joshua, and Sabrina, 2021 was such a hard year. I felt like if I supported one of them I was betraying the others😭

btw in the midst of the whole drivers license drama josh and sabrina were supposed to realease a song called "we both know" for josh's EP. the song was cancelled (and leaked) probably in order to let the drama die out because the lyrics say "i cant pretend we are just friends, we both know where this is going"

A bit related but I met Joshua Bassett once. I met him while he was at the LA Dream Center planning for that walking fundraiser he did. He was genuinely the sweetest person on the planet. The whole time he just kept talking about all sorts of stuff (MrBeast, Kim K, etc. We were talking about how money can change the world for reference. We also talked a whole lot about the Dream Center iteself and asked me about the volunteering I was doing there and how that was going and like where I was volunteering and stuff. So cool). We spoke for probably 20 minutes and just chatted. I eventually had to go so I tried to leave but but he just kept talking so I was late for where I had to be since the conversation just kept going and going!! It was so sweet. Absolutely amazing experience.

Anytime this is brought up it physically pains me because as someone who’s been a carpenter since 2015, who was just enjoying being in this somewhat small and peaceful fandom, to have watched her slowly grow musically, vocally and in her acting to only have this hate train suddenly just come straight towards her was awful. If you supported her you were automatically hated on. Also seeing how badly this affected her at the time. I’ll never forgive the people who left nasty comments on her instagram birthday post. NEVER!!! I’ll never forgive them for also taking away the safety she felt when it came to talking to the fandom on social media. She used to be so active and talk to many fans and dm many of us often but obviously because of the overwhelming hate she basically had to set boundaries. Understandable. I’m so glad that she’s become more known. I know she’s just going to go up from here. She’s deserved it for such a long time. I feel like many can agree that ‘emails i can’t send’ is her current magnum opus. It feels as if she’s finally found her sound and true style. Love to see her include her humor into her music but yeah she’s always been very playful with her lyrics. She said how she almost didn’t include nonsense in the album so we should all be grateful that she decided to. She really did write a pop hit! P.S. i had never heard of any of the people involved until driver's license came out, so as an (self-described) objective third party, what bugged me the most was how much olivia got hit with copy-right infringements on her album when it came out on songs that honestly didn't sound that much like what she was allegedly copying. not to come for anyone's fave, but i remember both taylor and paramore and possibly others sued her and it really just felt like a bunch of big powerful musicians were coming for a really young artist who just put out her first album and wanted to avoid controversy and just let them take credit so she wouldn't get anymore heat. i get that they're all bagillionares and olivia certainly doesn't need those royalties to survive, i'm just talking about the principle here. drama and love-triangles aside, olivia was seriously wronged by the industry when the album came out and was 100% taken advantage of and it was honestly so scummy. i think this happened with another song on her new album. she's not some serial copier, i think it's just that a lot of pop music sounds similar.

I think more people should know that Skin was a response to fans "getting under [Sabrina's] skin" and not necessarily responding to Olivia. You're totally right though, the drama is petty (which is ironic because the drama is how I discovered Olivia's music lmao). Anyways, they're both incredible artists and seem like amazing women. I'm a huge fan of them both. Glad to see them successful and thriving!!

@@chloeb.705haha me I was invested in the whole “are josh and Olivia dating” situation (weird I know) I remember seeing the snippet and messaging my friends cause I talked about them non stop and when the drama started I was like their little information person honestly kinda miss that time when no one really knew who they were still super happy for them though and all they’ve done

I choose to believe Nicole only made this new lore video so she could reuse the Barry Keoghan photo from the Saltburn video.

I love the way you respected them all. It’s a situation that happens to regular people all the time, just isn’t broadcasted to the whole world like their situation was. As both an Olivia and Sabrina fan, I feel for Sabrina in the situation but I also feel for Olivia. She was only 17, shot into the limelight and being heavily monitored for everything she did. Honestly I understood her keeping quiet because the media could spin whatever she said into something to make her look bad or her talking could've stirred the pot even more and make everything worse. Being criticized and talk about is just the price of fame, so I don't think Olivia was obligated to protect Sabrina from everyone's opinions on the situation. When has someone like Taylor Swift ever done something like that. (Certainly not during the Jake Gyllenhaal hate train era of Red TV). Y'all need to stop expecting these people to be the epitome of morality and goodness when they're not something to be idolized. They're regular people with messy emotions like us.

⁠​⁠@@amelianeioko978i think the reason it was a big issue was because in the video Olivia explicitly said she wanted to mimic the screaming at the end of Cruel Summer aka she took more than inspiration in a business standpoint you should never outright say you want to copy another song because that can cause issues which in this case it did I think her label really failed her and they should have not allowed her to say that nor should they have just given up with rights it's not like Olivia was from an indie label company she's part of a big company that didn't educate her enough

Here's a bit from an interview with Jack Antonoff about the credits: 'Antonoff was recently added as a co-writer on Rodrigo's break-up belter 'Deja Vu'. Rodrigo was inspired by the bridge of Taylor Swift's 2019 song 'Cruel Summer', which Swift, Antonoff and St. Vincent co-wrote. "I had never met her, and I had never been in a room with her. So it's interesting... because another song on that album, that was an interpolation of [the Antonoff co-written Swift song] 'New Year's Day'. But yeah, it came through the channels that the bit on 'Deja Vu' was inspired by that bridge and we were going to be credited, and I thought that was really cool."' That info from Jack is really all we know. Olivia said from the start that she was inspired by the bridge of Cruel Summer. For all we know, the publisher of Cruel Summer (Universal Music Group) could've gone after credits. We don't know for sure that Taylor "went after her." Still, no matter what happened, it probably stung for Olivia. Really unfortunate.

I’ve been a Sabrina fan forever, I’m so happy she’s blowing up now but I’m never forgetting how so many people treated her over this drama. Olivia’s fans were insaneeee for sending death threats to someone over a “blonde girl” line and they’re still in her business for some reason 😵‍💫

I’ve been a Carpenter since about 2017 and I’m so happy I’m seeing the success she’s getting nowadays. From her other discography I would highly recommend listening to Can’t Blame a girl for trying, well be the stars, the middle of starting over, darling I’m a mess, eyes wide open, right now, thumbs, on purpose, run and hide, all we have is love, Paris, sue me, almost love, prfct, looking at me, exhale, in my bed, I’m fakin and take you back. They’re all really great songs that i listen to on the reg.

Skin was 10000% for PR. Olivia got a Late Night performance to play Driver's License, and Sabrina played Skin on a different Late Night show literally within the same week. It may have even been the same night. Skin was a single, but not even on the album like Fast Times was? That was also a single. The lyrics fit way too perfectly. It's vauge but fits perfectly. My opinions that no one asked for: -drivers license slapped and so did the whole album -skin was a weird choice because according to Sab they weren’t together so the song just painted her and him like they were. And some of the lyrics were…a choice -olivia should have spoken up even if it did nothing idk how you just sit back for that. (She did speak out so nm) -olivia admitted to taking (inspiration) from the cruel summer bridge but don’t think Taylor or her team should have went through with getting credit. It gives them a bad look. -sab is so cute and a really good singer/performer and I love that she’s getting more hype. -poor josh 😪 I think often Olivia’s songs take no accountability which is fine that’s her pov but ppl need to realize that just because that’s how she felt doesn’t mean anyone is wrong completely (there are songs where accountability is taken but again no biggie if not, just saying nuances are important) Edited for clarity, cus the replies are going off

I already aged out of Disney when Sabrina was on the show, but my friend really likes her music so he suggested it to me and I’ve been such a big fan ever since. I genuinely think that she’s an incredibly underrated artist, and I cannot wait for her to get this success and recognition that she deserves. She has an amazing voice, and I really like the disco sound for her. i’m also extremely disappointed that she wasn’t nominated for a Grammy.
