Chrome OS Flex Live USB Stick Dual Booting Using An Old Slow Low Powered Windows Laptop

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I'm going though a step by step guide that shows how to run Chrome OS Flex live from a USB stick. For this demonstration I'm using an old and slow Windows laptop. This Windows laptop only has 2GB RAM and a Celeron processor and doesn't run very well under Windows 10.
Here's some links to USB flash drives & Chromebooks on Amazon, I personally use SanDisk for important stuff.
SanDisk USB Flash Drives geni.us/SandiskUSBFlashDrives
Other USB Flash Drives geni.us/USBFlashDrives
Chromebooks on Amazon: geni.us/ChromebooksOnAmazon
This is also a good demonstration of dual booting Chrome OS Flex with Windows. In this instance, Windows is on the internal drive and Chrome OS Flex is booting from the USB stick. At this time you can't dual boot Chrome OS Flex from the same internal drive as Windows, although you can do this if you two separate internal drives, something I will be doing in another video soon.
You can also install Chrome OS Flex directly to the internal boot drive of the computer that you want to put it on, here's one of my videos showing you how to do that.
How To Install Chrome OS Flex On A Windows Laptop Turn Your Laptop Into A Chrome OS Flex Chromebook:
• How To Install Chrome ...
The first step to run Chrome OS Flex live from a USB flash drive is to create a bootable Chrome OS Flex USB stick, here is another video of mine showing how to create the Chrome OS Flex bootable USB stick.
How To Create A Chrome OS Flex Bootable USB Flash Drive Installer For Windows & Mac:

The second step is to use your computer's boot key to select the drive you want to boot from. Here's some common boot keys.
Manufacturer Boot key
Acer F2
Apple Hold Option (next to the ⌘ key)
Asus Del
Dell F12
Gateway F1
HP F9
Intel F2
Lenovo F12
Toshiba F2 or F12
Other Try pressing Esc, any of F1-F12 keys, or Enter
The next stage in this video is the installation to the USB stick.
Next stage is setting up Chrome OS Flex with a Google account.
Next stage is to finally boot into the Chrome OS Flex desktop.
I then show the KZread app running on Chrome OS Flex and playing 4K 60FPS game capture footage.
I then show how to switch back to windows and how to re-boot back to Chrome OS Flex from the live USB stick.
Here are the chapters for this video.

Tried it on several laptops and had a very good experience. That hardware support is fantastic, including automatically detecting my USB external DAC and playing all audio through it. If you have a look at what is actually on your USB stick there are several partitions and it does seem to store quite a bit of persistent data for each user session on each device you plug it into (on the start-up screens the OS displays the serial number that it has read from your device to identify it). They just need to change the name from 'Try' to 'Live Mode' - remember everyone don't hit the install button unless you really want to wipe everything (all disks and partitions !!) on the computer you are plugged into. I realise that this only a development release but I think the final release needs to encrypt the data on the USB stick.

Great video. The test of how well video runs on different O/S's is one I use when trying Linux distros. Most of the other reviews just show it working. You actually say it is am improvement over Win 10. Well at 2gig it must strain just to run the O/S, let alone video.

Hi Berner. Unfortunately I don’t think you can do that as I don’t think you can prepare the Windows USB installer under Chrome on Chrome OS. I don’t even think you can burn a Windows ISO inside Flex even if you already have the ISO. You probably will have to have a Windows USB installer already prepared, maybe from a Windows computer or find a Windows ISO and burn the USB flash drive from an operating system that can do that. If you are thinking about going between Flex and Windows on the same computer then you should maybe think about making a Windows disk image so you can load it back on quickly if you want to go back to it from Flex. You should also consider running Flex from a USB flash drive, which is what this video is about, as you can then also have Windows still available on your internal drive. There’s probably little difference in speed running Flex from a USB flash drive or a hard drive as most of the OS is in RAM. You can also install Flex to a second drive internally, just make sure to disconnect your Windows drive and any other attached drives when installing Flex to a second internal drive as it will wipe all the attached drives. Here’s a video on how to use Macrium Reflect, this is how you can make images of your Windows boot drive and other drives, it’s excellent software and I use this for all my disk imaging kzread.info/dash/bejne/hHx8yrdmj5O_maQ.html Cheers, Dave.

@@DavidHarry HI David, thanks for the reply. I did watch your other video, and yes I saw where you showed that Chrome OS Flex was in fact installed on the SSD. My initial question was more in the context of files that I've created that have personal data in them. For example, let's say I've used Google Sheets on my newly converted Chrome laptop to do some personal finance analysis. I really don't want that spreadsheet with my personal finance info, showing how fabulously wealthy I am (joke!), stored in the cloud. Can I save it to my internal HD? And does Chrome OS Flex itself have a limit on how much HD space it can access? Thanks again.

  • @DavidHarry

    @DavidHarry

Hi Daniel. I’ve not done enough with it yet to know certain answer but I will be trying out everything you’ve asked. I also want to use local files and not cloud saves. The one thing I can say is that when installing to an internal drive, it would appear to use all the drive. I don’t know what this limit is but my 128GB SSD in the Surface Pro 2 was totally used with the remainder after the OS being free for use, so over 100GB spare for storage. With all that extra space I would imagine that local storage is a thing Google have considered. Cheers, Dave.

If Google is going to sniff and glean all of your internet activities, and Linux is about improved "privacy and security" ? Why would a user want to install or use Google Chrome OS ? Why ? Same argument I'd use against a Linux User - using the Chinese version of Deepin...... You just can't take that chance.

I am personally thinking about doing this in a much more advanced sense and I have a few reasons. I am going to put it on a USB stick so can have the option of Windows but I need this for performance. My machine would be considered a high midrange with an i7 10th and it doesn't perform the greatest with Windows 11. I am a photographer/videographer/cinematographer and am going to be using this for intense video and photo editing. Chrome OS has gotten to the point that I can use Adobe editors like premiere and even Davinci. Doing this is a lot of work, but the outcome should get next level optimization for the OS and instead of the OS prioritizing processing Windows tasks, it can focus on the editors performance. You saw it with the KZread demonstration, the rendering IS faster. Also, for the spyware that you think Google has, there are things on ALL OS's tracking you and all of which can be disabled. One last thing is the VERY tight OS integration with Android. I can now have better integration with my phone. I use a Google Pixel and have never been concerned about my privacy and feel that Google makes incredible products that open up new doors for machines that were stuck behind closed doors. Finally, yes not all apps are supported, but most are via Linux with a few exceptions that we just have to wait a tiny bit for and well have and in the meantime either find alternatives or switch between the OS's. So, to answer your question... There are a lot of users at all levels of use who will genuinely benefit from Chrome OS flex. 😊
