I am glad Google is embracing more of Chrome OS's roots i.e. Gentoo Linux. They brought back the live boot environment, Linux app support and the ability to install it on a wide range of hardware. Masterful move from Google. I regularly use Linux, and as sad is it is to admit, it is unlikely to be the OS that rivals Microsoft's desktop OS dominance. Chrome OS has already overtaken macOS as the second largest desktop OS by market share, and with this move, they are likely to take more of the market from Microsoft.

Since its desktop environment is heavily based on the Chrome browser, I don't think that it will be more resource-efficient than Linux. But that's just my guess. Tried out everything a year ago on my 10 year old dell Inspiron. Chromium OS was good but linux was much better. For me it was the MX linux. Yes if Google allows the usual Android apps to install in chromium or flex then it will pretty much leave windows irrelevant. But sadly that won't happen. Google won't do that.

It’s funny that Google finally decided to make this official after so many years. Apple’s transition to the arm64 silicon which enabled mobile apps on Mac computers seemed to have awakened Microsoft (Windows 11 with Android subsystem) and Google (somewhat bringing ChromeOS to unofficial devices hopefully with Android support as well). The race is on. Intel is happy!

Chrome OS is a Linux derivative. Anyway a new user can find other Linux distros a little off-putting with so much choice and syntax dependence for handling issues. You take it to a local store to get it fixed, they will simply chuck a version of Windows to save both parties the hastle. I see this as a win for Linux community. Already tried it and here is my review: First and foremost, Chrome OS and Chrome OS Flex are different. Chrome OS Flex is a stripped-down Chrome OS intended only for older hardware. It is based on Neverware's CloudReady platform. Linux support depends on the recentness of hardware and for most of the older hardware without a security chip, it won't work. There is absolutely no Android app support in Chrome OS Flex. Google has clearly mentioned that Android apps would be supported only on the original Chrome OS (OEM-based Chromebooks). So no Android Apps for Chrome Flex. Well, all this means that on your older hardware, this might be as useless as Windows 11 if your goal is to do some productivity tasks.
