    Despite his hover failures, and never being ahead of Christosowen ONCE the entire match....Andy lost because his glitched into the Wall in Tower of Hera...Having to bomb himself dead and redoing the title room a second time is what absolutely killed him.

    imagine if andy decided to just skip the hover and kill moldorm 2, the hover isnt even that much faster especially with how inconsistent it is

    I think it was the 50/50 split on checking the Big Key chest in PoD vs clearing Helmasaur King that did him in. He had to make a return trip there that ChristosOwens didn't (because he found another key elsewhere; Ice Palace, I think?) and that ate far too much time.

    GG to the winner! Christos vs Andy is always a very close match. Thanks to all runners, the organizers, the commentators, the developers for a great tournament and many hours of entertainment... and of course, thanks to the trackers, the unsung heroes of randomizer matches. ☺

    Spoilers... Andy walked into GT 38 seconds behind Christos and finished Lanmo 2 20 seconds behind. He was closing in fast. The hover choke is what really killed him.

    I hope ChristoOwen is doing well after what happened yesterday and all as he had to suffer a loss. I just think it's so amazing how both players made such a great race come to life better than any old sports. Who knows.... I might start playing rando and join the gang someday; the Final Fantasy League Rando also looks really fun too. I'm glad that you guys here at Speed Gaming have such a great community, as I grew up with all these games and I love it how not just guys are getting into it as well. Once I get a better PC, I'll hook up my video capture device and stream perhaps casually first or join some scrimmages/exebition matches. Thank you all for hosting such a great series of LTTP Randos - watching these is a lot more fun than watching stuff like football or other sports. This tournament >>>>> Super Bowl :)

    That was so tense. Christos was comfortably leading early on, but Andy's earlier bad calls became his bad calls later on - I've also never seen two such different paths taken by the players, their paths only converged going into Ganon's Tower!

    If Andy had've nailed the first attempted trolldorm2 hover, he'd have lost by only 6 seconds. If he had either nailed or not attempted the earlier hovers on death mountain, he would have won by a healthy margin.

    Things I'd love to see someday: 1) Tournaments like this, but with $100+ entry fees and 95-100% payout of the prize pool to the champion. For some reason there's no focus on players getting paid (since who's going to go against GDQ because chaaaaaarity), so having a player be able to win a year's salary from one or two events would possibly pull in more competition and make things really intense beyond even what we're seeing currently. This way you don't have to depend on subscribers and donations over the long term. C'mon SpeedGaming, make your best players rich! 2) A tournament mode where it's encouraged to be able to essentially screenpeek at the opponent. If not directly being able to watch the opponent's stream, having some of your fans in the opponent's stream channel so if they find a key item, you're told about it right off. This would stop someone from getting too far ahead, and should allow for some closer finishes. 3) Some kind of tweak to the Randomizer that enforces a time penalty on a death (and a lesser one on a save-quit) so it can never truly be to your benefit to die, and it's borderline on saving and quitting at best.

    I like the idea of a paid tourney, but screenpeeking would kill a lot of the excitement, I think. As far as avoiding deathwarping and save-quitting... why?

  • @MewtwoStruckBack

    @MewtwoStruckBack

    Fieari Kei'lin The screenpeeking and paid tourney ideas don’t necessarily need to be together - I would like to see both but wouldn’t be mad if I just saw one. As for the last, I always held the skill of being able to go through something without losing a single life, in one straight shot, in higher regard than finishing quickly. Not that speed wouldn’t be a tiebreaker between multiple players who finish without a death for me.

    Hi, to answer some of your questions: 1) Speedrunners in general would not want to pay money. We have tried doing that previously and we only got a handful of entrants. Also speedrunning is not like any other sports or compeitions. In speedrunning, players with the better PB wins nearly everytime. Others would not give money for a tournament where they have 0 chance of winner. Which is why these tourneys we host are for fun. In the randomizer setting, there is that random factor, however there is a huge advantage of cheating and no easy way to prevent it. So prize money for randomizer tournaments would cause problems, unless maybe the tourney was done in person. 2) Screenpeeking is an idea we can look at. However it would depend on the communities they are based on.

    Thank you for replying! As an outsider, I didn't realize those issues existed to that degree, and they're definitely important enough that it would make it not work out for gambling type races. Honestly, I was just happy to hear it was at least tried!

    I don't think I agree about the last point. If a high-skill player dies, it's either intentionally (to save time on backtracking), or unintentionally (most likely against a boss). In the case of an unintentional death, they're already being set back a potentially large amount of time, so adding a time penalty on top of it seems like adding insult to injury. It would mostly just serve to discourage risky plays, which in turn makes it harder for runners to change positions in a race. And in the case of an intentional death, the point is to continue making progress more quickly, which helps keep tension up. Would anyone really enjoy watching runners needlessly backtrack through already-cleared rooms, just to avoid an arbitrary penalty? We already know there's no progression to be found in those rooms, so really it's just wasting everyone's time. Not to mention, an intentional death serves the same function as using the Mirror in dungeons, so this just makes the Mirror _even more important_ for speed and convenience than it already is, by punishing runners for not finding it sooner.
