Christopher Hitchens on Hannity & Colmes about Rev. Falwell's Death

Christopher Hitchens along with Ralph Reed participate in a debate on the legacy of the Reverend Jerry Falwell. This was recorded from the Hannity and Colmes show of 16-May-2007. UPDATE: December 16, 2011 - The influential writer and cultural critic Christopher Hitchens died on Thursday at the age of 62 from complications of cancer of the esophagus. For years, Hitchens had toured the country debating religious figures about his utter disbelief in the existence of a God. He didn't waver in the face of his inability to treat his disease. To the very end, whatever the argument joined, Hitchens' voice was an original. He is survived by his wife, the writer Carol Blue, and three children. Alexander, Sophia and Antonia. More information about Christopher Hitchens (from Wikipedia @ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christop...
Christopher Eric Hitchens (born April 13, 1949, in Portsmouth, England) is an Anglo-American author, journalist and literary critic. Currently living in Washington, D.C., he has been a columnist at Vanity Fair, The Nation, Slate and Free Inquiry; additionally, he is an occasional contributor to other publications and has appeared regularly in the Wall Street Journal. His brother is British journalist Peter Hitchens.
Hitchens is known for his iconoclasm, anti-clericalism, atheism, antitheism, anti-fascism and anti-monarchism. He is also noted for his acerbic wit and his noisy departure from the Anglo-American political left. He was formerly a Trotskyist and a fixture in the left wing publications of Britain and America. But a series of disagreements beginning in the early 1990s led to his resignation from The Nation shortly after the September 11, 2001, attacks. He is also known for his ardent admiration of George Orwell and Thomas Jefferson, and his iconoclastic criticism of Mother Teresa.
While Hitchens' idiosyncratic ideas and positions preclude easy classification, he is a vociferous critic of what he describes as "fascism with an Islamic face," and his critics have been known to describe him as a "neoconservative". Hitchens, however, refuses to embrace this designation. In 2004, Hitchens stated that neoconservative support for US intervention in Bosnia and Iraq convinced him that he was "on the same side as the neo-conservatives" when it came to contemporary foreign policy issues. He has also been known to refer to his association with "temporary neocon allies".
Hitchens no longer considers himself a Trotskyist or a socialist; yet he maintains that his political views have not changed significantly. He points out that, throughout his career, he has been both an atheist and an antitheist, and that he has always remained a believer in the Enlightenment values of secularism, humanism and reason. Hitchens has launched a detailed attack on Religion in his book god Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. He has also stated that, while he "was very much in rebellion against the state" during his youth, he is now "much more inclined to stress... issues of individual liberty."
Hitchens became a United States citizen on his fifty-eighth birthday, April 13, 2007.

chaz Davis You're right you are a nobody, and so am I, and so was Hitchens! Because being a total smart-ass, telling people that God isn't real, DOESN'T make you a somebody!! You say "I don't even amount to a spec of dust compared to Hitchens." I don't know what you think he amounted to, but whatever it was it was only in your mind and I wouldn't want to be compared to it! To most people he wasn't worth the crap they flush down the toilet each day, but that's beside the point. He was only a great mind to people of very low intelligence! Telling people that God isn't real when everyone knows he's REAL is just horribly WRONG! Purposely trying to steer people down the wrong path in life is again, horribly WRONG!! If you want to BELIEVE that God isn't real that's fine but keep it to yourself! I know your thinking we should do the same if we in believe in God. Well NO, YOU'RE WRONG!! We are telling people about an eternity of peace and extreme love and happiness with God and all your loved ones for ever and ever! Telling people that there is God is sending them down a path to an eternity of darkness and loneliness and eternal solitude, with no love no peace and never ever interacting with anyone or anything ever again for the rest of time! Not to mention they might deserve the flames TOO while going through all that!!!! So you might want to think twice before believing ANYTHING Christopher Hitchens had to say!!!! So..I might not amount to a spec of dust compared to Hitchens, Well.. Hitchens doesn't amount to ANYTHING compared to GOD!!!!!!!

And that all of this nothing suddenly began in motion as a result of...nothing? Trust me, people generally dislike atheists...atheists dismiss the notion of a deity...that, in turn, means dismissing the notion of a soul...and once you do THAT, well, you wind up dismissing a great deal of what many of us think makes life worth living...But forums like this will always tend to be populated by the fringe elements....there are some Christian apologists who do quite well defending their faith on an intellectual basis, but they are the exception rather than the rule...and some who do well defending the idea, in generic terms, of a deity...but the advantage is always with the atheist....We live in a physical realm...God would be, by definition, outside of that...outside of the things that can be measured, or weighed, or observed...Even in Biblical times, there are relatively few physical manifestations of the supernatural. So you wind up with a debate between people who embrace the totality of being human...the sense of awe, and wonder, and reverence, that have always been a part of our species...and another group who take some manner of perverse pride in dismissing anything other than the evidence of their senses...

Mister G is quite correct. Hitchens supported free speech, something the left never has and are attacking on a daily basis. But I have to ask what you mean by "Christian hypocrisy in 2019". Are you mindlessly parroting the usual narrative that because Trump is such a flawed personal character, then the Christians are hypocritical by their failure to instead support radical leftist democrats who oppose everything they stand for? I've been atheist for over half a century, I stopped believing in gods and Santa and the tooth fairy around the same time. But there is nothing at all hypocritical about Christians supporting terribly flawed people who do the right thing otherwise. Their bibles (yes, it's plural) illustrate that as a common theme. The stories are littered with terribly flawed characters doing their god's work. Trump is a saint compared to the horrendous flaws of Abraham and King David and even Moses, for just a few examples.

Hundreds of years before the Bible, there were characters in such poetry being banished from their garden of origin after meeting women who tempt them, forced to cover their nakenedss, characters then created from a rib after eating forbidden flowers (Biblically changed to "fruit") and more. Einstein referred to the Bible as _"Primitive legend"._ It's a storybook and a stolen storybook at that.
