My great great great grandfather was actually at this when it happened in real life (December 24-26, 1914), and he told the story every year on the same day for 77 years until his death in 1989(age 97), but even now in 2023(almost 2024), nearly 35 years after his death, my family still tells the story of those 2 days, out of respect for him and the soldiers (on both the British and German sides) who just wanted a few days of peace during a time of brutal and bloody war and conflict And as you said, “divided by nation, united by heart” that is the most appropriate statement for this situation I have ever heard in my life, and I’m 37 years old, which may not compare to my 3G Grandfather, but I’ve heard and seen some stuff That being said, (and me trying to not turn this into a collage thesis) this scene perfectly encapsulates the sheer emotion of this event, and I only wish I could have been there, in the cold and the snow, to see this with my own 2 eyes

Im in the military now..and I can’t help but say In some way I can sympathies with..a comment I read “Soldiers don’t start wars politicians do” and when that young man yelled out when he spotted an enemy, similar to what Im sure all of us would do while standing watch in a situation like this, I started to tear up, because all of us that have served know that yelling, and that indecision that spikes when your superiors are the ones who have always made the decisions with rules of engagement, but now in this moment, the gun is in your hands, the enemy is infront, and you have no command to tell you right from wrong, even if its training we can somehow imagine it..as if a warm blooded man was standing there. Then it boils down to exactly that, Men dont start wars.. we are all a little bit human somewhere.. Also don’t mess with the U.S.A. we’ll rock your socks, Takes alot of courage to shoot, and sometimes, it takes even more courage, even more strength, to not fire. Speak softly and carry a big stick

They were supposed to go there to have the germans hand over their weapons and prepare them for when the american ships would come the next day. After the german soldiers handed their weapons over, everyone went to a bar and partied all night. My grandfather had his violin with him, and since he grew up in germany, he knew all the folk tunes that the young soldiers were familiar with. He spent the night playing these for them, everyone danced and sang and had a grand old time. When the americans came the next day, everyone surrendered peacefully.

This event really happened. They couldn't speak each other's language but they found they had more in common than not. They shared pictures of their families with each other. The best part is one of them had a soccer ball so they played ! But when the sun started to come up they shook hands and went back to their bunkers and carried on with the job at hand. Soldiers involved didn't speak about this until the war was over. I found this inspiring as well as sad.

My grandfather flew the A-10 during desert shield southern watch. Even though his job was to clear out remaining terrorists between supply lines he always refused to fire unless he had to. His wingman was understanding so he always shot instead since my grandad never wanted to take a life. For those of you, you don’t know who don’t know the Christmas truce of 1913 was in event in germans couldn’t find a Christmas tree so they snuck past no man’s land to get one. They also realize that they wanted some alcohol so then they tried stealing one from the French when the French realize that the Germans were Germans they didn’t care they just gave them the alcohol and let them leave freely the next day both France and Germans came out of their trenches and made a truce for Christmas and that time of the truce they built snowman they drink together they had snowball fights and and so forth. This is how powerful Christmas is.

"Peace cannot be achieved through simple brutal force, but by mutual understanding and compasssion.
It's too bad they don't teach students about this moment in schools.
1914 on Christmas day. On the western front the guns all died away and lying in the mud on bags of sand. We heard a German sing from no man's land. He had a tenor voice so pure and true. The words were strange but every note we knew. Soaring or the living dead and dammed, the Germans sang of peace from no man's land. They left their trenches and we left ours. Beneath tin hats smiles bloomed like wild flowers with photos, cigarettes and tons of wine. We built a soldier's truce on the front line, their singer was a lad of twenty one. We begged another song before the dawn. And sitting in the mud with blood and fear, he sang again the song all longed to hear. Silent night, no cannons roar. A king is born of peace for evermore. All's calm, all's bright. All brothers hand in hand. It's gas and rusty wire in no man's land. And in the morning all the guns boomed in the rain. And we killed them and they killed us again with Bayonet, bullet gas, bomb and flame. And neither we nor they at all to blame. There was heavy fighting throughout the day, for one night's peace we bloodyly did pay, that night they charged we fought them hand to hand. And I killed the boy that sang in no man's land. Silent night, no cannons roar. A king is born of peace for evermore. All's calm, All's bright. All brothers hand in hand. And that young soldier sings. And the song of peace still rings. Though the captains and all kings, Built in no man's land. Sleep in heavenly peace.

Such a true thing happened, and it showed that if we truly wished.....if we truly wished.....we could let it all go...the pain...the wars...the violence...........all the drama we humans cause. People say life is hard, but in its truest form life is simple....if you involve humans though....we cause the drama we cause the hard life....when truly we can make it like this, where we shake hands and help each other and be joyous together and simply let all these crazy things go. Just let it go, we are better than this...I'm not saying we are perfect....but we are better and we can strive to be....for only the flawed can strive to improve. We can't if we are perfect....so it's always good to at least strive..to try to be.....but it's whatever...my thoughts, my idea of how my sister and brother humans were suppose to be.....but now as a adult....we aren't so great

My great grandfather was a captain in WW2. He got 2 Purple Hearts because he evacuated a Jewish family in hiding from the Nazi and also survived a stab to the back of his neck from a Nazi while playing dead (was paralyzed on his entire left side ( I believe ) and his pictures include him with his cane. Miraculously he regained consciousness of the paralyzed side of his body. Thank you Great grandpa, I know the country did not become what you thought it would have or perhaps it was not the country you thought you were fighting for, but I appreciate you and all the men in our family line who joined and fought in the army. I love you so much even though I never met you and you have my greatest respects, as does every single American soldier who fought in WW2.
