1914 | Sainsbury's Ad | Christmas 2014

Ойын-сауық

Sainsbury’s Christmas advert, 1914. Made in partnership with The Royal British Legion. Inspired by real events from 100 years ago.
This year’s Christmas ad from Sainsbury’s - Christmas is for sharing. Made in partnership with The Royal British Legion, it commemorates the extraordinary events of Christmas Day, 1914, when the guns fell silent and two armies met in no-man’s land, sharing gifts - and even playing football together.
The chocolate bar featured in the ad is on sale now at Sainsbury’s. All profits (50p per bar) will go to The Royal British Legion and will benefit our armed forces and their families, past and present.
To watch a short film of the story behind our Christmas ad: • The story behind 1914 ...
To watch the making of our Christmas ad: • The making of 1914 | C...
The chocolate bar is available while stocks last. Subject to availability. Excludes online.

    The real story is that a single german came up first, Not the British. After they had to go back to their trenches, in which they did not want to fight. The final decision was made and they were then replaced. It's pretty sad that the Politicians wanted to make them fight whereas the war could've possibly ended then and there. Edit: Almost the 1 year anniversary since I wrote this comment, Happy Christmas.

    TDFodZ as far as I have read, the trench line was way too long to exactly determine who came first. People from one side saw the other but might have not seen their side in which someone could have come out. This is probably why different sources say different things about who came up first.

  • @MARTINA85202

    @MARTINA85202

    TDFodZ also about what you said about the politicians, I read that after this they put the head soldiers and the soldiers that participated to the truce “to die”. Allegedly they moved them to battles that they knew they were going to loose, in the front lines as well, purposely to make sure they wouldn’t survive. They didn’t want people to know about what happened, -they also tried to stop the letters they wrote to their relatives about it, but they couldn’t control some that were already sent. The story was already out, because those were the proofs.

    You might want to watch the final part of the last series of famous TV comedy "Blackadder goes Forth" nicknamed "Blackadder goes over the Top" It's here on KZread. Nearly all of Blackadder is a pleasure to watch, tho I wouldn't recommend starting with the first installment. Check for the episodes featuring Lord Flasheart tho Rik Mayalls acting is not for the faint hearted ( check " the Young ones" and "Bottom" series for more of that brilliant comic) As for that final part - it's in the top ten of most memorable moments on TV in the 20th C for a reason, and it's surely one of the best I've ever seen. Even if it's comedy, one of the more touching scenes you'll be able to watch about WW1

    Not really, during the Christmas truce some people used it as a chance as sabotage and were untrustworthy of each other, including an incident where German caroling was ordered to be drowned out by British gunfire and artillery. But not every sector was like this, even Indians made peace with the Germans on Christmas, although none of the Indians knew or cared about Christmas, the lit bonfires reminded them of Diwali, and some Germans led Indians out of the trenches with Cigars and smokes.

    This is still one of the most magical and beautiful moments of humanity. In the greatest war of the time, two nations that could barely understand each other, bonded through song, and the joy of the holidays. Could forget their conflict and instead choose brotherly love. Only but for a minute.... but a minute was all that was needed to remind them that they'll all human inside and out

Both sides knew that their enemy soldiers weren’t bad people, they just had a goal that would be detrimental to their way of life. Sometimes, sacrifices are necessary before things can get better.

    I was in the advert and now nearly seven years on i still think this was one of the highlights of the centenary. We had a hard but rewarding time making this film. Most of the cast were reenactors, WW1 enthusiasts or serving or former British military. Yet i do not understand the hated at times. The events in the advert are an honest recreation of the events at Wulverghem on Christmas day 1914 between the 16th Bavarian reserve regiment and the 1st Norfolk's and C coy of the 6th Cheshire's where there really was an informal kickabout between the British and German soldiers.

    I'am German and i've been to the UK twice in the last 6 months, because my girlfriend did a erasmus exchange semester. First i felt little uncomfortable when people asked me where I come from, or heard me speaking german with her, because of all what happened in the past. But then people where so nice and amazing, they were really interested in that, asked of which part in germany i am from, they spoke a few words german with me. All the years I had the impression that people in the UK dont like us, but it turned out to be wrong. It was a wonderful time in a wonderful country. Watching this reminds me that our languages are similar, we have same roots (my name is Jim -- mein name ist Otto), were friends and live not far from each other. This Ad is a wonderful appeal for peace and brotherliness. May you all have a nice year 2017.

    Brought tears to my eyes. Actually if you look at history, culture and religion Germany and the UK are way closer then for example the UK is with France, Spain or Italy etc. We are common allies and its very sad we had two world wars to suffer through for both our peoples.

    The Christmas Truce was a beautiful thing, but sadly the war did wear these men down. The following year, commanding officers strictly forbade any enemy fraternisation and from 1916 there was no suggestion of any truces. By this point loss of life had been too enormous and the use of poison gas made both sides bitter against the other.

    @rattis7 жыл бұрын

    Historians have called the Christmas truce of 1914 "the last moment on the 19th century". The event is an example of the kind of belief in human beings inner goodness and decency that was common in 19th century culture (as the soldiers on both sides dared to assume that the enemy would be decent enough not to take the opportunity to attack once the opposition had their guard down). After the horrors of Word War 1, in fact DUE to the horrors of World War 1, this belief in human decency was forever lost among the majority, and replaced with a sense of cynicism and an idea that there is no limit to humans capacity for evil. This is seen for instance in how about two decades later, during World War 2, a few soldiers during a few separate occasions tried to initiate the same kind of Christmas truce that had occured in 1914, but these attempts were always futile; most of the time the soldier who tried to initiate it was immediately killed by the enemy. By that point, our modern time had begun, and there was no room left in such a cynical world for the kind of old fashioned gentleman who sincerely believes that human beings are fundamentally good.
