First time I saw him 1993. My ne t door neighbor knocked on my door one night and said grab your coat we’re going to see Chris Whitley (Smart Bar - Chicago) . I said who’s Chris Whitley. Hour 1/2 later a freaking spaceship comes down and drops this guy on the stage. My music world was never the same. NO ONE has come close to him since.

Ed - You should join about 1500 fellow abducted-by-aliens at the All Things Chris Whitley group on Facebook.
his elasticity! he IS liquid here....love it when he shouts...STARVIN IN HIS TRAILER HOME....he was so full throttle...the epitome of an ARTIST....to the degree that the gift was SO intense that he almost HAD to have people minding/guiding/supporting him - reminiscent of Van Gogh....otherwise BIG trouble.....and so it went....I feel so lucky I got to see so many shows from the start to the finish.....
Those of us who were touched by Chris never will forget. Thx
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Chris Whitley was the last great American poet singer song writer, guitarist, musician and improvisational performer. Never plays a song the same way twice, no fear.
I was at this show! I seem to recall at the end of his set, or maybe at the beginning of the encore, a woman grabbed his arm and he seemed freaked out and left the stage and was done. I guess I know what I'll be watching tonight, thank you for posting this and all these videos. I can't believe it's been 15 years. I was lucky enough to have seen him I think 6x in Philly over the years.

You're welcome! Actually, this show was 25 years (!!) ago, not 15, and today we recognize Chris's passing, which was 15 years ago ... DUH! which may have been your point in the first place :(

SAY AGAIN??? ;)
Thank you for all of the CW videos you've posted, especially those from the Din era. I wasn't fortunate enough to see him in person, but your clips hint at the energy and vibe. Thanks again and again and ...

I can't believe you posted this show. I was in the audience that night. It was my first time seeing CW and the first time at a venue that small. Tops my list of favorite concerts ever. Thank You!
