I saw the Punch Brothers last night in Dallas. The first call back consisted of Thile coming out and playing a 4 minute Bach piece to absolutely stunned silence. He deserves every penny of his MacArthur grant and all the recognition that goes with it. He is a true genius.
I'm glad this guy decided to visit our planet.

me too....
It's taken me about a month, but I've just finished learning this piece myself (obviously not as fast or accurately as Chris though). Coming from a folk mandolin background, working on this has been a mind-blowing experience. Thank you so much Chris Thile for introducing me to the world of classical mandolin!

BRAVO! It's not an easy piece. My fingers just run out of steam by the time I get half way through. He doesn't even look like he's pressuring on the strings. The talented Mr. Thile! Gadzooks! This is one of my top faves of Herr Bach. I Iove the sinfonia version from Cantata No. 29.

Bach is the master. Baroque music works very well on the mandolin. It's really in all I play. Try some Vivaldi, too. Try Vivaldi's RV 532, Concerto in G for two mandolins and strings. He wrote a lot of stuff for mandolin, albeit baroque mandolin. Händel's Water Music is splendid as well as hls Concerti Grossi, Opus 6. Fun to play and nowhere near as difficult as Bach. Emanuele Barbella wrote some fun stuff for mandolin as well. Even Mozart wrote for mandolin. Die Zufriedenheit and Komm Lieber Zither Komm. Beethoven too!
Each time I watch and listen to this video I'm left speechless. The music is timeless; the player has achieved the highest level of artistry.
Chris Thile is an ideal musician by my definition. Versatile, expressive, intellectual, relatable.
Bach is just an ultimate test for anyone's technical capability. Therefore he became my all-time favourite music material for listening and rehearsing.Chris Thile is brilliant as always.Whatever he touches turns to gold.
A whole different Realm on the Mandolin. I Like it!
Such accurate fingerwork and yet the line carries on through. Amazing!
This video is so intimate, close-up of a master performer reflecting the simplicity, passion and brilliance of the composer! 💐Thanks C.T.
Chris is gifted to the extreme with a musical brain and with his fine motor skills. It takes both to be a true virtuoso.
I think I will watch this over and over.
Oh my god! This is so so awesome! Thank you very very much for that masterpiece!❤️ Many greetings from Germany 🙋🏻
There are many undiscovered talented individuals out there... Pick up that instrument and continue practising ! My father always said to me. "If he can do it so can you."
Ooh yes! Just heard it live on beeb’s front row. 🙏🏻
I love Chris for being soo much in love with this music.
Bach would definitely be happy!!! Thank you!
I have been partially in love with this man since I was like, 13 years old. LOL. He is absolutely amazing
I LOVE how this sounds on mandolin!!! I takes on a whole new character.
That's extraordinary! I wish I could play like that...
the laugh at the end is the real happiness
Clap clap clap. What a gem.
Absolutely beautiful. I smiled at the end too.. sweet

he makes everything look sooo easy. wow.
Machines do not move with such precision and grace.
ENCORE! ENCORE! I loved seeing Chris Thile at Carnegie Hall last year.
Thank goodness for music, sweet music. One senses Thile listening to his own playing. What a balm.
Chris never gives up the energy or fluidity in order to achieve the wonderful Bach dynamics - the other player is good, but this one is beast.
Although I realize it's the normal way to play, I'm still astonished at the speed and precision with which you can play a mandolin with a pick (rather than fingers as with a classical guitar). A beautiful job. Wonderful piece.
brilliant...seen nickle creek twice in seattle.....love chris sean and sara
i was at the portsmouth show the night chris received it, they tore the house down, i'll see him every chance i get, real music , and american too love it
I love his super-cute, satisfied smile at the end, and that he never looks at the camera, because this humble, HANDSOME young man only shares his talents with the world, he never gloats... Love you, Chris.
Holy wow...superb composition and masterfully performed by a young Chris Thile. Great stuff...
Thank you KZread for suggesting this video.
I love Chris Thile. I first saw him in '93 at IBMA. Even as a child he was an incredible force to be reckoned with and a joy to see and hear!
How does this not have more views?
blissful.
That is the most beautiful, yet fucked up, thing I have heard all day long. Thank you.
ladies and gentlemen, the greatest mandolin player of all time
This guy....is breaking my heart. What a stud.
Child prodigy grows into his enormous talent. Thank you brother.
It's wonderful and breathtaking and stunning.. My favorite note is the last one. It's like after busting that thing out so well he can't believe it was muted.. That smile breaking across his face is a pretty nice human moment. I feel you, man. I'm really looking forward to this video.
phenomenal.
Fantastic
Clean and beautiful. I appreciate the fact that his breathing is very quiet.
your right txsphere its good to see someone who gets it
Incredibly virtuostic and emotional rendition. I love it.
Awesomeness..........
A complete pleasure! The wonder of Bach is that his music addresses all genres from even before his own time through to blues and jazz. It shows us through the mirror that is music our most humane self. Every musician the world over should bow their head in thanks to him. I enjoyed your performance very much!
fantastic!
Amazing!
beautiful
Quel bonheur et un grand merci!!!!!
Here, ladies and gentlemens, the best mandolin player that has lived in the face of earth, CHRIS THILE¡¡¡¡¡.
This is...beyond brilliant. I honestly have no words for how perfect this is.
Truly beautiful!
blown away...wow
Great phrasing/dynamics... I'm blown away
Do y'all know how hard this piece is?? It is touted as one of more difficult pieces for both lute and violin. It is incredible that he is able to pull that off with his instrument. He is no joke!!
there are some musicians who will inspire you and there are some who leave you speechless
Wow. how glad you can be. I think he´ll never come to Germany, but if he does, I´ll be there.
What is going on in the brain to make that happen??? Flawless, articulate, amazing. Am in awe of you Sir.
highly gifted...real joy
AMAZING!
Fantastic!
Wonderful ! Bravo !
This is purely magical!
For some reason I listen to this song when I'm depressed and stressed out, I feel better after listening to it 4-5 times.

Simply beautiful to the soul
Grande chiarezza. Bravoooo
amazing!!!!!
beautiful, bravo
imagine playing that whole thing, then missing the last note. what a heartbreak
Every music genius composer, needs music genius performer....thank for the great music and performance...
It is not about harder or easier. Many people can reproce the notes from the page on their instruments. the IT is the life and soul of the music. So many classical musicians are so taken with performing the dots off the page they miss the swing that cannot be notated. Quantz talked about swing, I know Bach had to know about it also. Making the tones all fit together so it makes sense. Many musicians lack this because they are just playing the dots on the page. Usually in empty halls.
what an inspiration...
so clean. With a pick too...
Incredible...
Watching this is like an auditory catharsis from most music on the radio.
Bravo!
Great!
Just got done watching John Williams play this, arguably the best classical guitarist of our time and the pace and fluidity that Chris plays this blows Williams out of the water.
Wow! I'm in love....
he is an otherworldly master of the mando. im in love with those fingers.
very nice!
wow, seriously, wow!
Without the first generation there would be nothing. Love Chris
