I saw the Punch Brothers last night in Dallas. The first call back consisted of Thile coming out and playing a 4 minute Bach piece to absolutely stunned silence. He deserves every penny of his MacArthur grant and all the recognition that goes with it. He is a true genius.

It's taken me about a month, but I've just finished learning this piece myself (obviously not as fast or accurately as Chris though). Coming from a folk mandolin background, working on this has been a mind-blowing experience. Thank you so much Chris Thile for introducing me to the world of classical mandolin!

BRAVO! It's not an easy piece. My fingers just run out of steam by the time I get half way through. He doesn't even look like he's pressuring on the strings. The talented Mr. Thile! Gadzooks! This is one of my top faves of Herr Bach. I Iove the sinfonia version from Cantata No. 29.

Bach is the master. Baroque music works very well on the mandolin. It's really in all I play. Try some Vivaldi, too. Try Vivaldi's RV 532, Concerto in G for two mandolins and strings. He wrote a lot of stuff for mandolin, albeit baroque mandolin. Händel's Water Music is splendid as well as hls Concerti Grossi, Opus 6. Fun to play and nowhere near as difficult as Bach. Emanuele Barbella wrote some fun stuff for mandolin as well. Even Mozart wrote for mandolin. Die Zufriedenheit and Komm Lieber Zither Komm. Beethoven too!

Although I realize it's the normal way to play, I'm still astonished at the speed and precision with which you can play a mandolin with a pick (rather than fingers as with a classical guitar). A beautiful job. Wonderful piece.

It is not about harder or easier. Many people can reproce the notes from the page on their instruments. the IT is the life and soul of the music. So many classical musicians are so taken with performing the dots off the page they miss the swing that cannot be notated. Quantz talked about swing, I know Bach had to know about it also. Making the tones all fit together so it makes sense. Many musicians lack this because they are just playing the dots on the page. Usually in empty halls.
