I know everybody is commenting about the mandolin and banjo, etc. However, the bass is the one that is killing it here.

FOR REAL! He’s holding the whole thing down and bowing of that speed on the bass is really hard

Here, he's holding down what would be the cello and double bass sections. Some of us played this as a warm-up before concerts. The Rosamunde was a piece of cake after that.
One can say they've witnessed true mastery when the performer exudes effortless joy and immersion while showing their skill. This is what I see whenever I go back to Chris Thile's performance here.
I sit here in England with tear in my eyes. They are pure joy. The Punch Brothers are superb.
The rest of the guys are in a concert hall; Chris Thile is at a Renaissance fair.
This is crazy good. They are probably like “everybody ok after one run through?”
I actually heard a host on WCRB, Boston's classical station, suggest listeners go to youtube and listen to this. He is right. It's great.

I discovered them this week, their recording of Debussy was on BBC Radio 3 - it doesn't get much higher than that!
Simplemente digo que BACH debe sonreir complacido por la bella interpretacion y el respeto demostrado......!!!!!
Bach would have loved this! I remember when David Munroe, the first Early Music guru, put on Swingle Singers to show what BAch was about!

The Swingle Singers were magnificent. Bach would have been delighted-and perhaps jealous! I am sure he would have been thrilled to have such vocal dexterity in Leipzig.
Those wonderful 60s and 70s. All Bands from the Beatles et al and Dylan et al. Every so often put astck LPs on the record player stare at a blazing fire and soak up Bach et allll. The miracle is reintroducing the power and majesty of Baroque composition from Herr Johann Sebastian Bach. Using blue grass instruments is an amazing novelty: demanding attention from the masses of deprived generations… sooo Good. I’m a 76 yr old Aussie..
I shared “My Oh My” with someone and he suspected they might not be as good live and so I sent him this. (And a live My Oh My). If you’ve not, you MUST experience these boys live.

I can still remember the first time I heard this recording a few years ago. I've been chasing that musical high ever since. Nothing has come close.
This is a great rendition of the Brandenburg concerto 3 with strings and yes a banjo.

Ed Carlson, actually, these are movements 2 and 3 of the konzert.
Gould would fall over after that little transcript.
Incredible arrangement. Only Punch Brothers can pull this off.
These are some musicians at the top of their game. JS Bach would definitely approve.
Watch the audience. Watch how Mr. Bach and this performance gets them! Beautifully done.
I really love it. It makes Bach's music come to life in a way that feels so current!
I can’t believe how well this arrangement works for folk band!
Sublime... Bach would be proud
Be still my heart.... Just amazing❤️❤️

And apparently he KNOWS it, too, Seth. In addition to the looks, one notices the round spectacles. :)
yes :)
I'd love to hear them do the 6th brandenburg!
The title is wrong since they play the Second movement and then the Third. I came for the mandolin and stayed for the Bass, great player.
Chris Thile looks like drunken weasel sometimes when he plays. I love that guy.

Terrific! (Shame all the shots are close ups, though ... would have liked to have seen more of them).
I love this but the camera filter is super irritating.

This is great! The videography is a little distracting, but I didn't come here to "watch". I noticed almost every other musician up there has brows furrowed, focusing on their sheet music or instrument. Meanwhile Chris T is smiling and swaying like he's just there to listen. Dude is on another level. Can you at least *look* like some effort is involved?

Great music to cheer you up.
T'aint yer typical bluegrass band, but I'm sure they'll ketchup...
There has been a far better video of that very same performance: very vivid in sound quality and as a video, too. Overwhelming and direct. Too bad, that this has obviously been pulled from youtube and been replaced by this rather boring (again: in terms of sound production as well as visually) version. Whoever considered that to be necessary: What could be the reason for this decision? Probably property rights, as always...

It’s a shame this was filmed by the same guy who filed Dracula
So when Kimmel was younger, he played banjo?
