I have both. Love both. Always switch between the 2. You'll never go wrong with either one.

When I first got my sebenza I wasn't totally sure that I would love the way it deploys. You absolutely can flick it out with a little bit of rest but I find myself just manually pushing it through the arc. I got lots of flicky knives and I love them but I find myself just opening the sebenza slowly and enjoying the action. I held one when I was younger about 15 or 16 years ago and have wanted one ever since. Thankfully I haven't held a Hinderer or I know I would need one of those too. Which is a problem because I already spend too much on knives. Great comparison video. I think people get hung up on the idea that there is a single best knife but a lot of it comes down to what you are doing with it and what you want out of it. Application is everything, just like knife steels or motor oil, what you do with it influences what is "best"

Great video. Execellent points made on both knives. I have a Half Track Wharnie, small Sebenza 31 and small Inkosi. If I had to go down to one of them, it would be the Half Track without hesitiation. While I love CRK and everything they stand for (quality, precision, service, etc.), the Half Track just feels like more knife to me and it always puts a smile on my face. It's the best "small" knife I've ever used.

My only issue with the hinderer is that for less than 300 you can get the ZT0562 which is very close to the same knife for far less...Chris reeve is a totally unique feeling

I have the xm-18 3.5 with a blue textured ti scale. Love it! Also love my Large Sebenza 31 with black Micarta inlay. Not sure which one I love more. Definitely see this as a tough fight to the death. I do really like my Full Track with 20cv a bit more. Just wish they offered a few more custom options for after purchase.

No problem with the choice. I got my first Sebenza less than a week ago and I even carried her twice despite the draconian knife laws where I live. But the entire time I was listening to your battle to the death, I was browsing the XM-18s at DLT - with the calculator open inputting all the little options.

Hmm I really like that you can choose the bronze washers. I work in a very dusty environment so having that option is awesome.

I like that Hinderer offers his designs in several price ranges such as the Cryo's, the 0562 and his own. I would love to see both of them offer a more budget friendly option.

I own both and I love them both for different reasons. However, I do like the comparison purely for entertainment sake. Thanks for the video!

I have both. I love both. Both are worth every penny of their cost in my opinion. A Benchmade or Spyderco will cut something just fine and feel good in the hand. Moving up to this price point brings joy every time it is removed from the pocket and held in the hand. To quote Wranglerstar, they give one the “fizz”

I agree that the tri-way pivot makes this a contest. I own and like them both. The XM-18 is a muscle car and the Sebenza is, as you said, a 911. With black micarta, it’s a turbo 😄.

I have and love both but just received my 4th Hinderer xm-18 and had to return it for a badly off center blade. I have 5 Chris Reeve and have never had a quality issue with them. I still love both.

We can be pretty sure that problems of any nature must be very rare for both these knives. I ALMOST have both (I have 3 small Sebenza 31s, and 3 Hinderers, a Jurassic, an Eklipse and an XM-18 3.0), but I must say, I like the Hinderer(s) better. I too like a knife that can be flicked out with thumb studs, and my Sebenzas can’t do that (maybe they can be adjusted?). I don’t like the excess gimping on the XM-18, especially in the landing zone, so I’m not sure I really need an XM-18 3.5. That said, “of these two,” it would have to be the Hinderer, but not the XM-18. I think I would (If I had an XM-18 3.5) prefer my Jurassic and Eklipse.

I love both and have both 21, 31 and 2 of the xm18 G6 and G6 XM 18 non flipper so not mad at you for the XM 18 winning but I definitely want a S 31 with inlays love the videos thanks and stay safe you and your family

Gotta say I agree. The Sebenza is great if you like how CRK makes them. The Hinderer can be made into whatever you think is great.

Two of the historical holy trinity of knives. You really cannot go wrong with either of these for a fantastic edc piece. Both of these are really better for everyday tasks, and easier to obtain these days than the Strider SnG.

Sitting here as a Chris Reeve "fanboy" and slowly starting to accumulate a few Hinderer knives I'd like to be upset... But everything you stated is true. Great review, and thanks for having the stones to do it Slicey! Either way, I'm still carrying my Umnumzaan and my Half Track Wharnie in the same pocket. Perfect two knife duo in my opinion!

One other comment on the final "value" category. While you make some good points, there's one key thing that you leave out, and that's that the base model XM-18 has a G10 scale, whereas the Sebenza is a full TI knife. To get a TI scale added to the XM18 you're looking at an additional $200. To me that really changes the value equation quite a bit. Then you're getting comparable handle construction with a slight edge to Hinderer's steel, but the pricing is then $625 vs. $450. When you consider the handle element, I think the value category tilts far more towards the Sebenza. But, just my opinion, they're both great knives. And yeah, I did pony up the extra cash to make my XM full TI. Had to do it.

Nice video. For me is to like comparing Apple computers (Sebenza) vs IBM PC(Hinderer). Both do almost the same thing. The simplicity and precision of a Chris Reeves and the customization flexibility of the Hinderers. That comparison starts with the way both companies package, the slim and nice the Sebenza look and the myriad of accessories a XM supports.

Honestly I have been saying my next working knife will be a 31 but I may change my mind now seeing this POV on the xm. It does sound like it will suit my needs better

What I love about comparisons like these is that they’re both excellent knives that definitely compete with each other well, yet they’re also different enough that they could comfortably exist side by side in a collection without competing for carry. Personally, I’m partial to the Sebenza, both overall, and especially because they make a left-hand version; also while I definitely can’t disagree about the issue of $450 for S35VN, it’s worth noting that no one heat treats S35VN like CRK, and apparently they still get excellent edge retention despite being on the slightly soft side. For me, Hinderer loses completely purely because it doesn’t even offer left hand carry; if they ever made a left-hand version I’d desperately want one, but if I could only afford one, I’d get the Sebenza.

I know he wasn't shitting on 35VN but c'mon it's still a premium steel. I really look forward to the day where another new steel doesn't get revealed each month. It's just the flavor of the month and makes people want something new. I'm not against progress and I wholeheartedly agree that powder steels have done great things for the hobby/industry. But at what point do you ever say "this steel just isn't doing it for me any longer".

I love the aesthetic of the CRK line waaaay better than Hinderer (except that Jurassic...so nice) but have to agree with your decision here. Hinderer seems to offer a better package when put head to head.

Biggest difference for me is that the only authorised retailer in Australia for the Sebenza has a 48 month waiting period and his delivery times are already around six weeks from the order when a knife is in stock. Comparatively, the Hinderer retailer here (while still having stock issues) does actually have stock and postage takes a week at worst. Therefore, the Sebenza is very difficult to acquire. Could ship it from overseas, but there’s a coin flip chance a customs officer will see a nice knife and “seize” it.

I have eight large lefty 21's of various types made in the last (about) two years. They all have the stepped lanyard pin. My wife has several smalls and all have it. Some of hers are years older than mine. Some of my older (again, new collector) ones do need the trick to keep the pin in place. I'm not sure the changeover date.

The hinderer’s flipper tab has way too aggressive and sharp gimping. I buffed mine for a bit before deciding to add a tiny bit of superglue between the jimps. It can be removed but it tames the jimping. The frame jimping you point out also needs to be dialed back by Hinderer.

XM18 were designed for a person wearing gloves. Then Hinderer has other knives with less aggresive jimping. Ive owned both and both are great knives. It just comes down to preference cause both are solid knives.

For me the 31 is more comfortable in hand and a better slicer. They are both beautiful over built iconic folders, I dig both of them.

I have yet to find a Hinderer that stayed in my collection, as compared to five permanent CRKs (likely six when I eventually add a Large 31) ....but I don't disagree with anything you said here.

You don’t get a Sebenza for its customization, you get it because you know exactly what you’re getting. It’s all about expectations. If you buy a Sebenza expecting to be able to customize it, then you’ll be disappointed. I have the Lunar Landing Sebenza 31 on order and can’t wait to get it. I have an XM-18 and have it pimped out in copper and carbon fiber and love it. No doubt I’ll love both knives equally.

People tell me I'm wrong every day! 😂 Good vid and nice knives, I'm not that keen on either of them if I'm honest.

The newer 21's have the new style lanyard tube too so it stays in.

I must say, the whole "CRK runs their S35 a little soft" is at best based on ourtdated information, if it was ever really true. Everything that has gone out for HRC testing from CRK lately has been coming back right at 60 which is not "soft" in the least for S35VN.

They seem to have the best s35vn I have tried. I am sure a lot of it is the edge geometry but my sebenzas hold an edge a really long time for s35vn.

I’ll put it like this. - I own both and have been using their knives for years. For edc I’d say grab the Sebenza all day long, it excels in slicing and cutting tasks you’d face day to day way better than any hinderer xm18 even better then the slicer grind of xm.... however If you told me I’d need to beat on the knife in a hard use situation like a military deployment? - I’d prob go with a Xm 18 spanto grind since it could legit double as a pry bar. - but overall I’d say for just about everything else the Sebenza wins... something with the Sebenza just feels so special and the quality control and customer service is second to none (imo) and experience. Also the spa treatment they offer to basically makes your knife new again for $25 even after years and years of use? - unbeatable in that regard. I love both - I just feel like the Sebenza is the better knife in every aspect.... the hinderer is only a better choice if you want to use your knife as a pry tool as well ...

Well said. And I'll add that a Sebenza is far from fragile. They're built extremely well and as tough a folder as I will ever need.

Got both. Love both. I’d rather cut with the Sebenza. I’d rather sharpen the Sebenza. I’d rather play with the Hinderer. Functionally, the Sebenza wins. For fun and a hobby the Hinderer does. Gotta say, I love the hollow grind on the Sebenza and I think a hat M390 would be a downgrade with such a thin grind because it would increase the chance of breakage. S35VN run like it is, is a perfect choice for the thin grind of the Sebenza.

Hinderer and Chris Reese should make a Collaboration knife, wouldnt that be awesome. A Xm18/subenza 31 Hybrid.

I am a huge CRK fan, and not really a fan of Hinderers at all. And still, i completely agree with your assessment. Some people will be confused by that statement, and wonder why i prefer the crk, which is perfectly reasonable. But theres just something about crk, some intangible thing that makes me love them, even though i dislike s35vn, considering all the other amazing options there are. A crk inkosi with m390 would be my dream knife. But enough rambling, great video.

I don't own either but with the blades being more options for hinderer, not necessarily true because crk has 3 shapes and you can get 3 different Damascus to so it's more even than you initially think

chris reeves excuse for using s35vn is the one thing that really rubs me wrong about crk. in the BHQ shop tour he said that the “average” consumers wont be able to sharpen anything harder than s35vn. sorry chris but i dont think there are any average consumers buying a $450+ knife.

You also didn’t mention that hinderer does in house aftermarket parts too. Like brass hardware, clip covers, and such. For me both are perfect, with the xm-18 being a little more perfect. But I’m having trouble picking between the xm-18 and the Jurassic. Do I get the Jurassic for the nice ergos, or the Xm-18 for the aftermarket customization?

I own a xm24 and like the crk a lot but I also have a zt0562cf and that would compare ascetics closer to a crk as far better carry and less jimping , and dressier, at 260 bucks the value is there!

Very fair review. I've had the Sebenza but sold it. Looking at a Hinderer now, but it's hard to justify so much for a knife. I'll probably figure out a way though.

I have a xm-18 3" and a small Sebe 31 infront of me now (not my only xm's/sebe's), my take is the Sebe when I'm going out somewhere and the XM for when i step out. Sebe is a more classy knife while the XM is more beefy. Really its apples and oranges, can't compare so just buy both, then buy other variants, then friends start saying 'you have a problem' blah blah blah....

I would get both and you don't lose.

The Sanremu Land 910 vs the Kershaw Cryo should have been on the undercard!

For me the xm 18 is the winner. Much better styling for my taste. Its not plain straight and boring. Plus its a flipper. Now let's see which ones wins! Go hinderer

i have a 21 and the lanyard pin doesn't fall out, mine thumb flicks hard with no wrist at all, you just have to break that action in

I wish hinderer's flipper was more like the ZT 0308, less aggressive on the fingers. My holy grail is a Holt but I think the closest I'll come in the near future is a Sebenza.

Now, three years later, the 31 is $600 including a four year wait.

I think they are both worth the money. CRK takes the win for me, but the Hinderer is right behind it.

I know I'm late to the party.... but I prefer the crk, the only issue I have with the hinderererererer is their ti finishing, on all the models I find it to look cheapish if that makes sense

and the winner is the sebenza 31.... in my book at least.... I like the solid titanium scales on the CRK...

I have a large plain 31 and had an xm-18 3.5. I far prefer the sebenza, the xm was clunky and not as refined; sold it. That said, I don't think the sebenza is the end all or anything, it does seem to be getting a little dated, even with the new upgrades.

I prefer CRKs to Hinderers just because it fills a role in my collection that's more unique, plus they're more aesthetically pleasing to me. There are a million frame locks on bearings, and several I prefer to Hinderers (Chaves Redencion Street being my favorite). Overall, very well done video. My only qualm is the statement that 20CV is just better than S35VN. I don't agree with that. It has better edge retention if heat treated properly (but a lot of 20CV heat treats suck), & it's more corrosion resistance by a little bit. S35VN is tougher and tends to sharpen a little more easily. Still, a very well thought out comparison overall. Keep up the great work Brian!

I'm torn between these two knives. The fact that the xm-18 has my favorite blade metal and more customizable the 31 gets edged out.

I would have to say Chris Reeves s35vn is far superior to the other s30 or 35s that I've had. In fact I find it out performs most of my super steels that I've acquired. I'm a believer that a proper heat treat means far more than the glorified stamping of blade steel

Geometry plays a huge role.

At 18:00 you've got two categories and basically two ties. The last knife you talk about gets the favor lol. You're like a ref between two HoF championship fighters getting roughed up. No matter the outcome its going to be emotional.

The value breaks the other way for all the southpaws out there. I now own almost double digit numbers of CRKs, all in left handed configurations. I've handled Hinderers and owned one for a bit, but for all the options and customization Hinderer offers, something lefty or even ambidextrous doesn't exist. And that's a huge bummed.

Rick hinderer has recently been releasing lefty xm-18’s keep an eye on his website and Instagram!

I choose the Sebenza. Only because I prefer a thumb stud and a neutral handle on my drop points for versatility in grip. Also really like the hollow grind for EDC. Both great knives that I'd be honored to own nonetheless.

CRK gives you slow, glock-like, incremental improvements to their line. Charges the same amount and it looks like the same old thing... Forgot to mention - I take S35 over M390 clones any day - similar and very easy to maintain. S35 is a much better steel (for me) than the chippy m390/20CV/204p.

Sebenza is $100 more with inlays. Hinderer is $200 more if you just want Ti on both scales, which the Seb has in its least expensive form.

If they’re the same price, and have decent materials, the knife that feels better in your hand wins.

Big Stems That’d be the main decider for me here too. Having a fully left hand option is really cool but honestly not required; we’ve all learnt to use a right hand frame/liner lock. The issue with the Hinderer is that I can’t even carry it in my left pocket without spending yet another $100 on a replacement G10 scale drilled for left hand carry. Ignoring those concerns, I also prefer the classic aesthetics, sleeker carry and unrivalled quality of the Sebenza, but I still like the XM-18 enough that if I had the money, and it was more lefty friendly, I’d honestly want both. However I draw the line at spending more just to be able to carry it, especially since it’s a compromise I don’t need to make on knives costing 90% less.

I like both, but I’ll never own. Too pricey for what you get. Hinderer too me looks more worth the price than Reeves. IMHO

I own, and have used both quite a bit. That is the 21, and a non flipper XM18. IMO the seb. Is better at most anything you would need a knife for. Quality control is also a few steps above the XM. But the thing is, if i could only keep one, i'd keep the XM! 😂🤪 At this pricepoint it's just as much about feelings and "what you want" than reason, logic and the sum of some metal parts... My most carried/used knife is an old American lawman in AUS8 anyways! 😂

Owned more than a few large Sebenzas, Strider SNG's, ZT's but never a Hinderer. I've handled XM's back when but felt they were overhyped. ZT's 0562 is enough Hinderer to know if its for me and I sold it. Still, XM18 is an iconic knife and now that prices have stabilized I'm shopping a Gen6.

I would love to get a Hinderer xm18 3inch but they seem to make very few knives to keep the hype going...and the secondary market pricey as f**k. So based on that CRK wins....also Crk don't build their knives with G10 to sell overpriced extras. $75 for a f**king pocketclip 🤣 Buy a Sebenza,it's full titanium right out of the box and they actually build & sell knives unlike Hinderer.

Now if I can only use some Corona Bucks to buy one of these without the wife killing me.
