YEEEES. One of the best vocal performances of all time. He could do it all man. He has excellent solo records, plus Soundgarden, plus Temple of the Dog, plus Audioslave. I mean damn.

I was a dirty kid with high ideals and perspective of other cultures and other lives. At 19 in 1990 he was my brother who understood me and I would fall asleep to him learning life together. They taught your voice, standing up for love and kindness , difference and being yourself.

You are spot on about his maturity here. Younger singers are still after the shock and awe response , he’s got nothing to prove here

He really could’ve been a blues singer some kind of soul singer. He wasn’t just a rock God.

There's not a style that he couldn't pull off. You can even hear his soulful influence when he did hard rock in the 90's.

For likely the most stunning example of his younger vocal range, I would recommend the old Soundgarden tune “Beyond The Wheel”. On the studio version he starts out low in baritone, rises to a mid-range voice, then shoots all the way up to the fifth octave in tenor, and spends a lot of the song way up there. It’s unreal.

For something extremely unique you should try Chris Cornell singing One. It is a amalgamation of the U2 music of One and the lyrics of Metallica song One. A masterpiece.

Not only imo one of the best voices ever, but also a great lyricist and so good at arrangements, knowing how to make the most impact. Plus he excells at being able to bring extraordinary emotion into whatever he sings. One in a million talent ,RIP Chis C

Yes!! Finally! Been wanting this one forever! The lyrics man…I only love you when I’m down but I’m down all the time. Heartbreaking 💔 You will love Like a Stone by Audioslave which he was in in the early to mid 2000s live at AOL with just Chris and an acoustic guitar. So moving! Also his album Songbook is some of his best songs all acoustic and all amazing!

You bring up a good point. I personally think voices like his and Lane Staley, Cobain and others started back in the day as metal band type singers, and after many years of heavy stuff, it had to have strengthened the hell out of their vocal control abilities. Just a thought. Great reaction video, keep up the great work!

So glad you did this one! Check out these live performances: Beyond The Wheel: pick between these 2 live recordings. The vocal performance here is astounding: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ha6c1peLdtyTfLQ.html (song starts :45 in). But this second clip is the more popular one. The video quality is better here, and the vocal is more prominent in the mix at this show - kzread.info/dash/bejne/mZxmktNsdNuegqw.html As Hope and Promise Fade: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dYN9w6due87VlpM.html ... and this epic studio recording of Slaves and Bulldozers: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qZulrqOldq7aiKQ.html

So many people appreciate what a great vocalist he was, but not enough people really appreciate his songwriting. This song is deep as fuck. He's addressing his depression as being "down". When he says "I only love you when I'm down, but I'm down all the time" he's acknowledging how messed up he is, but it's all he has to offer.

What say you now The door is opening on your vigil Now I'm in my usual way I save my breath, knowing what you're You're wanting me to say I only love you when I'm down You say that midnight Opens its arms to me Leaving you alone, then I fly so far away Until the light blurs my vision And I have nowhere to roam I only love you when I'm down And I only love you when I'm down And I'm only near you when I'm gone But one thing for you to keep in mind, you know That I'm down all the time All the time Well, I know you're reaching out And you need to feel my hand You want to be understood Yeah, well, I understand I know you hold Precious little hope for me And in your happiness I'm always drowning in my grief And I only love you when I'm down, oh-oh And I'm only near you when I'm gone But one thing for you to keep in mind, you know That I'm down all the time All the time All the time All the time
