I remember the first time I saw CHP do this on the freeway in L.A., I was driving a school bus from the Central Valley on a field trip to universal studios with high school students on board. I immediately turned on my hazard lights and proceeded to drive slowly and cautiously until said caution was over… needless to say we were a little delayed to our destination but my passengers weren’t too concerned, they thought what the officer was doing was cool! Oh, and this took place almost 30 years ago!

I never saw a state trooper do this until today. I was like "What, is he drunk?"...no, he was trying to warn everyone that there was debris in the road. I was ahead of him and wondering "What the heck, did someone hijack that trooper's vehicle?!" at first. The things you learn!

@eblaze619
2 жыл бұрын
@@emva9063 I presume you are kidding but in the case you are not, the purpose is to slow and/or stop traffic either to remove a road hazard or an accident. CHP officers will often times get dispatched to assist tow trucks and other officers that are in compromising locations, so this maneuver helps to ensure the traversing public and all others involved are safe. In the same breath if they are called to remove furniture, construction cones or anything unsafe in the travel lanes they will do a traffic break for themselves to remove hazards. Hopefully my explanation will help you better understand the purpose of traffic breaks.

There's a double digit percentage of the population in CA that doesn't speak English. An even higher percentage that drive unlicensed. Most of those people are in San Diego. That simply wouldn't work here.
Beautifully executed traffic break
We had one incident on the 405 where a CHP was doing this but one driver kept getting closer and closer to the point the CHP used its PA Speaker and pulled him over after the maneuver was done.

I was in the front row of one of these one time on the 880 in Oakland. 1 squad car and one motorcycle cop shut down all 4-5 lanes to a complete stop. No idea what had happened. Prob. something minor as 880 30yrs ago was narrow and fast with on ramps that were WAY too short.
I can feel my arms hurting just looking at this.
And then everybody joined and the whole boatload of commuters had a great damn time. The end.
I've seen this on the 5 by camp Pendleton...cops was going at least 80 swerving like that...but now I understand how traffic starts..
I actually witnessed this for the first time in Philadelphia. A Pennsylvania State Trooper was on I-95 south, just before the airport.. I assumed it was due to the accident which occurred, in order to slow traffic before reaching the scene...

Being a police officer is actually one of the safest blue collar jobs you can have. In 2019 89 police died making the deaths per 100,000 11.1, to put that into perspective 410 farmers died from work related injuries the same year, at a fatality rate of 19.4 out of every 100,000. The most dangerous job is construction which had over 5,000 work fatalities in 2019.

Could me many different things. An accident with rates blocked, debris in the road. They could be trying to recover a large vehicle, shifting traffic for construction or whatever. It's not done for no reason as many idiot drivers assume.
In the UK our police officers or sometimes highway patrol they will swerve between lanes but not quite like they are but more smoothly and they'll put the light up sign in the back to say stop and anything behind them has to slow down until a eventual stop.
You know he's having fun.
Damn it is awesome... Professional officer can be
Is this the 500 race to see how many vehicles to stay in line wow this is so cool
In the UK rolling road blocks are either done by Police or Highway traffic agency. Warning lights are put on by lead vehicle with follow me or do not pass matrix signs displayed. The lead vehicle does an initial zig zag then holds position in center lane ahead of rolling traffic.
@EnjoyFirefighting
4 жыл бұрын
in Germany it depends on how many lanes the highway has and if the traffic behind the police car is rather light or heavy. In light traffic conditions they'd make further zig zags across the highway if someone didn't see them, and on the wider highways it's normal that they keep on doing ig zags across all lanes until they all have slowed down and stay behind
Well if nothing else.... The Christmas Tree's on wheels look nice!
NGL, this looks really fun
this reminds me of a collie rounding up cattle lol
I saw this maneuver on I55 south of Chicago to slow very heavy traffic down to a full stop so cars involved in a chain reaction wreck in the left lane could be driven off in a line at a right exit. That involved multiple cruisers.
Lol if you see cops swearing in California it means we got big trouble ahead!

What, the safety car also needs to heat up their tyres now?
