Yes, I want every tour to be carefully researched, so it's more than just looking at sights, it's also about learning a little background about the place.

Thanks for the tour... very informative. Let me share with you what I know about the name 'Chowrasta'. I heard from my elders that it came frm an ethnic name in northern part of India. They r called Saurastra people. They originally from Gujarat state but many have settled in south Indian, to be precise, at Ramnad district. Close to coastal area. If you see, majority of Malaysian Indian ancestry goes to this very location. So they might have migrated to Penang n made this area their settlement. Below is the link to know more about them. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saurashtra_(region) I'm not 100% sure about this but this is what I have heard. Thank you

Hi Tim. Thanks for this video. On your webpage you wrote, "The structure, which is single storey tall, remained unchanged until 1960. In some old photographs, you can see the front facade with the date 1920 on it." You didn't provide any of those photos. There are scant few photos of the old Chowrasta on the web. In my search I found less than 5, always at the same angle outside. Does anyone have more pictures of this place before its renewal?

As a rule, I do not show photographs that were not taken by myself. And, you rarely see period photos on my website. To see old photos of Chowrasta Market in c. 1900 and c. 1920, I refer you to the book, "Penang, 500 Early Postcards" by Cheah Jin Seng, page 179. The appearance is similar to the Sia Boey Market (I have the video here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gKqZs8Zslc7VoJM.html) For an existing single-storey market building in Penang, look at the Bayan Lepas Market (www.penang-traveltips.com/bayan-lepas-market.htm)
