How did you do it?

My chow learned how to open water bottles and drink out of them...on her own. It shocked me because my mom was so happy on how well I trained my pup. That she can open the fridge and reach a water bottle on the bottom shelf, close the fridge, open it and drink out of it. She didn't spill it and drink, she held it up and drank it from the top. Amazing little furr ball. I miss her.

We've had 5, absolutely our favorite dog. Everything said about Chows here is true.

This makes me so happy. I myself own a chow chow, and although I get many “oh so cute! So fluffy awwww!” comments, I still get some of those “watch out, those are really aggressive” comments. Nah, any chow that is given the proper discipline and love and has been socialized properly will grow up to be the sweetest baby ^^

@@PETIQUEPets His AKC name was KONA KEEI LUCKY.... Keei Hawaiian sound "K -Eye " " K- e ". On west coast of the Big Island , Keahalakua Bay, the south reef is named "Middle Keei Reef " across from the Captain Cook Monument. A guy I. worked with asked if I wanted a dog ,he said he would let us have a puppy . He bread them and told me that they are like cats in they will crap in the same place and they are clean. THIS IS THE TRUTH. years after we moved to a new house , I said you guys are really great about clea n ing up after Kona . I mowed the yards,grew the roses,cleaned the pool. And there is no way could get out. the wife and kids said ,I thought you were doing it...? no I am not doing it .! In fact now that I think about it, I haven't seen him (I mean years). go except lift his leg . He never would on walks even all-day walks. He would let us know when he wanted to go outside. I remembered Ron telling me about there habits. TALK ABOUT SPOILED the next question is Where.? the next time nature called I watched him. he walked around watching the house all the time , then he went to the farside of the swimming pool and went behind the garage..... I ran out and looked around the corner quitely and watched him ... squeeze between the chainlink fence that ran from my street to the other street behind my place. the neighbor behind me, had a 6 1/2 ft tall wood fence eighteen inches inside the chainlink. I guess he didn't like the chinlink. what that left was a 18" × 160' solid wood fence no spaces and a chainlink fence on the other with no neighbor on that side. I couldn't believe it , what I saw him do was go down 30' stand up so he could turn around , and do the " same time ,same station " LOL. so to speak. The mysterious riddle was solved. I mean years before we caught on. YEARS.! HE ATE Science Diet dog food unlimited quantity ie he could eat when ever he wanted , and what that did was he would " one piece at a time it. " . where ever we were he would bring a few pieces and eat one or two. I miss him

When we were watching TV, he would walk in and get our attention and drop one pellet on the hardwood floor and keep it between his paws for a few minutes then eat it. Go get another one. We fed him off the dinner table to green beans, ham bones left overs. The thing is I could eat any time I wanted, So I just applied it to him to. He wasn't fat. My Daughter and I miss him. In fact I have to stop..... Because..... Well you know....

Ive been owned by three Chow Chows....they are the only breed for me. I unfortunately am moving to accommodation that allows no pets....but if I had my own home again, a Chow puppy or rescue would be high on my priority list....Ive never had a dog breed that gave me so much joy.....

I found one wandering alone in my neighborhood and it was such a beautiful red that I knew I had to find it's owner. It was so chill. I was able to hold onto the ruff and try to lead him into my garage. I have cats and I tried to tempt the dog with dry cat food. Didn't work of course but it was not aggressive. It was definitely full-grown because the head was as tall as my chest and probably near my weight. While I went inside to call animal control to see if it was reported missing, it slowly ambled away. So I never got a chance to return it. A week later I saw a woman walking it and I told her about trying to return it, but she absolutely denied it could have wandered alone!

I’m 41 and have had chows all my life. Our older chow chow just passed away and we got an 8 week old puppy. I forgot how easy they were to train because I just raised a English retriever. She peed in the house the first day because she was scared. After that, she went to the door and whined. Even at night!

I’ve raised 2 chows from baby to old age and they are the most amazing dogs, I wouldn’t own any other breed and I’m waiting for my third one to be born as I write this! Best to know is that they are incredibly smart, loyal, stubborn, this guy is wrong because they are very high maintenance actually lol with their grooming , need to be socialized lots thru their lives or they can get territorial of their space, great guard dog, would die to protect you, they generally are very lazy and docile, not a first time dog owner type pet at all! My chows were my best friends and I miss them terribly…I’ve never owned a better breed and I’ve had a few kinds from shi tzu to rottie and chows are definitely where it’s at if you give them lots of love and attention , they will return it in spades✌️😍♥️chows

I grew up with a chow and my uncle also had 2 and bred them and I never knew they were thought of as a aggressive breed. Our Black Bear was the best dog! He was so patient with us as kids and protective. I can tell you I would have never in a million years thought anyone would think this is a aggressive breed. I have such fond memories with our chow and everything he used to do with me and my brother. My daughter is now looking for one for her 13th bday and I’m so excited to be around a chow chow again!

I know. I loved my chow. Pits are very sweet as well. Coincidentally the one and ONLY dog I’ve been bit by was a golden retriever mix

Watching this brings me joy, but it also makes me sad. I've lost my chow about 1 year ago. Her name was Yuga. She was really smart, lazy, and loved attention. You could cuddle with her all day. I actually didn't mind the fact that they don't like strangers. Just like your kids, you don't want your dog to be with strangers. On the other hand, if they see people more often. They will accept them. I still miss her but we've had 12 wonderful years together.

2001 I had Chow BEAR. He was protected of me. Love him. Very smart.

We had a Rotty/Chow-Chow mix that passed away last month of cancer (damn cancer). We loved the daylights out of that dog. True to the Chow-Chow breed, our guy was indeed stubborn and lazy. To his credit, he was loyal and always wanted to be with his peeps. Also, he was the most gentle and loving dog I've ever known. He loved every person or animal he met...even if they didn't love him. A magnificent animal! Will always miss him.

I was so glad when my Chow got big because. I would walk him and twice a car of g guys would pull overand say Can I Hold him . Id pick him up and HELL NO. and Run home. BEAR WAS BEAUTIFUL. when he finally grew up. He was my protector. Chows are very protective of their owner. True 😅

No such color in the chow breed as gold. Cream, red, cinnamon black and blue.

We have a chow puppy, Lola, who has just turned 6 months (we got her at 3 months). We love her to bits but don't know much about what to expect growing up and also the best way to train her. She has been a bit difficult to housetrain but we have not had any puddles for about a week now. She is generally very quiet and docile but has a few mad moments where she runs about like a mad thing and jumps on furniture and can get a bit bitey. We have never laughed so much as when she is having a 'moment'. We have taught her 'sit' 'lie down' and 'paw'. She was quick to learn these but struggles with 'stay'. She pulls on the lead and is very strong. I have tried to train her to 'heel' but its slow going. She also will flop down on the floor when I take her outside to do her business and sometimes when on a walk and refuses to move in a protest. I have tried to manage this by gently pulling, verbally persuading her and using treats but she keeps doing it. Does anyone have any tips for training her or managing stubbornness with this breed?

My brother just moved back into the area to build a new house and is living with me and brought his Chow Chow, China, with him. I haven’t had any animal ever in this home I built it 10 years ago. The shedding is the only way you would know a dog now lives here. She is 8 years and the sweetest and friendliest as in when she is with someone she knows and a strange approaches, the person with her’s response dictates her response. Which is usually friendly, since most people just want to pet her. 😁 He has had 4 other Chow Chows over the years, but this one is special. The others just never seemed to warm up...🤷🏻‍♀️ China was a stray that was found living on the streets that he adopted and he wonders if that has something to do with it? Is personality/temperament in a dog something that they are born with or can be formed? I have been watching a lot of Chow Chow videos. Started more as the history of the breed, where the name came from and now I find myself watching everything! 😉

Growing up in Florida we always had chowchow’s my favorite was a female named dozer because when she was a pup she dove straight in to the food bowl that was twice her size she was my best friend through junior high and high school she was a cinnamon chow and when the bus dropped me off at the end of my driveway she was always there so happy to see me now I am married and my wife and daughter are cat people but I hope to get another chow chow one day

My 7 month chow is so stubborn. She usually good with potty training but occasionally mostly pees on my bedroom carpet. She started off chewing on everything but is slowly getting better at it. The older she gets the bolder she gets, she takes off running now when we go outside and far at that. Her energy level is always on ten. She is really becoming a hassle.

No... it's not true that we should willingly teach Chow Chow extra discipline otherwise they would step over you.... I've had two Chow Chows, the first one been lived till fifteen years five month and the second one been lived till thirteen years elf months.... Both were quite easy to be trained and both of them were smart and sensitive enough to understand me and my german language.... I only speak with them with normal sound as a man speaks to their children and my chows were totally understand 😉👍 !! It's really important to teach our pet with sense of love, we should not teach them with military system and with loud voices !! I even brought my Chow to the airport almost everyday to my office there and everything went so well 👍 !! One thing that we should know, that Chow Chow loves to be an "one man dog", so I never let the passengers touch my chows at the airport 😊 !

I have a chow chow, she’s about 14 weeks and ever since we got her at 8 weeks she been a biter. I’m guessing that’s how she’s plays but a lot of times the biting causes bleeding. Also she likes to bite other dogs when she plays with them. Is it normal since she’s still a puppy?

You really have to match up personality wise to own a Chow Chow in my opinion. I read about them for years before I got my first one and he was about 18 months old. The lady who I got him from let him out into the yard with me and she said if he likes you he's yours!! He liked me and I loved him! He never acted homesick or wary of me after I brought him home mind you I was 14 at the time. But chow's read people and judge people very much so. He knew my youngest brother was scared of him and he took advantage of that fact and the only person he would growl at has my youngest brother. Then my uncle came along and try to manhandle my dog after he got off his chain. I told my uncle leave him alone he don't know you and my dog attacked my uncle luckily my uncle was able to my dogs stocky stature to his advantage and leap away from him while holding his collar above my dogs ability to bite his arm!! Chow's have a short muzzle so he wasn't able to bite my uncle. In my dogs defense I warned my uncle to leave him alone!! But my uncle convinced my mom the dog dangerous and needed to be returned to the lady i got him from 😥

@@PETIQUEPets yes most certainly he didn't know my dog. Chow's typically aren't the type strangers can just rush up to and start treating them aggressively without consequence. That's why I appreciate the breed they are great watchdogs and loyal

I so miss my Teddy he was a blonde just like his mama I was his person and he was a great dog I lost him . Can5 prove it but the neighbor in back of my aunts house poisoned him ,we lived there and his yard was fenced in and he had a run attached to him only because he could reach the front door and push it open and escape and didnt want him to get hurt or sprayed by the mail man again, we had his eyes done the typical eye sergery that they need it's sad that I lost him like that it killed me he went into his last seizure and never came out of it omg what a day at the vets office that was ,I was a groomer and had to take time off of work I can't talk about it right now but they are the best dog I ever had he loved me and I loved him very much....terrifying the way I lost him tragic and it gave me PTSD....

People MUST research the breed beforehand as I did with my Chow . I got him at 8 weeks old and was lovingly but stern that I was the alpha . Yes , socialization is much more work with a Chow than other breeds . My male Chow will have to see someone new at least 6 times before he will not bark at them and accept them . The breeder I got him from ( who bred only Chows for 40 yrs ) said you cannot ever trust them to be alone with children , especially if you have more than one . It is a Chow Chow,s nature to be aggressive !!! In my research of Chow,s , I read that they were used to hunt wolves . That tells you something right there !!

How do I housetrain a 2 year old abused chow chow who hasn’t been trained before? My dad bought a Chow Chow 2 years ago and he was very eager for the new experience. To cut to the chase, he would always be stuck in a cage gathering poop all around his cage. He wouldn’t do anything about it. I convinced him 2 years later if we could make him an actual family dog and he did but it didn’t work and out and he doesn’t have the time for it. I know, he’s an asshole. He’s not exactly 2 years old, he’s about to turn 2 years old in a month. The dog is so gentle, he is not aggressive. He only barks when he gets envious of other dogs, that’s the only time I’ve heard him bark or get angry. He is very easygoing. He sheds a lot of fur, I also have sensitive skin. Unfortunately, he has been mentally abused in a cage for sitting in their most of the time 24/7. I tried to walk him outside but it would be very hot and inconvenient hence this thread. The cage is located on the terrace of the house so the sun would be facing but there is a curtain blocking the heat but it is still relatively hot. Now, I’m probably going to get my own room by the end of the month or when I turn 14 next year depending if I’m prepared. If that’s going to happen, I’ll try to convince them to have Chow chow sleep in my room. I’ll try to house-train him myself. That’s the problem, how do I do that. Where can he eliminate? We don’t have a backyard, we live in a private residential building so I don’t know where he can eliminate. Where should he sleep too? How should I let him eat? When he drinks water, it would always drip from his mouth and we would constantly mop the floor and the water would often pick up some of his fur and it’ll be an inconvenience. I need a lot of help on other things too, like what foods should I introduce to his diet or pro tips in general. Last thing I should say is that I live in a tropical climate so ambient temps would be very hot although there is an AC Unit installed in my room but I wouldn’t be using it 24/7/364. Please ask me if you need more information. Thanks and keep safe.

I've talked to this breeder before and while I don't think his practices are like a BYB, I find his ethics highly questionable and wrong. The fact he dismisses genetics is idiotic. Genetics DO matter, and as a breeder you're breeding to develop a breed and all dog breeds have their quirks and genetic preferences. GSDs tend to pace because they were bred to roam miles and miles every day. They are intelligent and often that makes their anxiety worse because they're aware more of what's going on. Reactivity is a trait in BYB and czech line GSDs. Chow chows have the bad reputation because they WERE bred badly. The fact he dismisses this because his dogs aren't aggressive, doesn't mean the other chow lines in the world aren't aggressive. Same with the dalmatians back in the day. At least, perhaps the breeders have a better hold of their stock now because many people want GSPs, GSDs, labs, goldens, etc now. Jamie doesn't have an official website listing his stock, how often he breeds these dogs, what health testing is done, and pedigree. A breeder wouldn't hide any of this. I shouldn't have to ask to at least see a lineage of dogs bred. He is simply a pet broker. No different than the puppy websites that connect to various Amish breeders. He is through INSTAGRAM. And only IG and FB. Big red flag. Getting a dog from IG is never a good thing. He is somehow okay with MERLE dogs. Many rep. breeders will stay far away from breeding merle dogs. There is no valid reason to breed dogs that may carry genetic diseases. On top of that, he believes that being an alpha is key to dog training. This is hilariously false and most dog trainers do not subscribe to this school of training. Jamie casually advises to "alpha roll" your dog to suppress it(stop whatever dog is doing). You're not a dog trainer, you deliver puppies, nothing else. Quit giving shit 5 second advice. Many breeders are not dog training experts yet act like putting dogs together makes them valid. I would spend my 1-2k dollars elsewhere. I will give him credit he seems to raise non-aggressive dogs, but this is not different than people mass breeding poodles and goldens and only breeding them for looks/friendlyness(so the dogs aren't shit but they're not anything beyond just a dog with no drives and just wants to sleep on the couch) and nothing else, no titling, OFA testing, showing, nothing. Highly questionable. You people need to better educate yourselves on dog breeding. Things like this are why people dump 1yr purebred dogs because of shit breeders who don't give a damn about anything other than its color.

@b b exactly! We had a lifetime of bad chows. I’ve heard of him way back but it turns out that he isn’t all that great. I just recently got another chow back last year as a puppy and while we had worse.. I ended up paying more for training due to certain aspects of her behavior I and my family wasn’t comfortable with. Unfortunately GENETICS do play a huge role and honestly people should watch out for breeders that aren’t reputable. Plus what many folks get wrong about chows is that they assume they’re chill and easy to train cause they’re puppies.. but what about when they get older?! I would def run far away from this person/breeder

For accurate information on the Chow Chow and a list of reputable breeders, go to www.chowclub.org - the website of The Chow Chow Club, Inc which is the AKC "parent" club for the Chow in the US. Avoid breeders like this one that take your money and you'll never hear from him again.

ALSO, there is no such claim as 100% potty trained at 2-3 months. Puppies do go through a period where they forget their potty training. Their bowel control doesn't stabilize till 1yr+ or so. Same shit when owners complain their 6 month dog forgot how to sit or down. The hormones influence a lot on their habits for a temporarily time. They may regress but it's normal. Such BS and false advice. Then you get people thinking some breeds are better than others simply because their dog didn't make 1 mistake in the house or they stopped doing perfect obedience!! Freaking ridiculous. If it was so true trainers wouldn't get calls just for potty training or dumbass shit. Good lord, where are people getting this info??

Chows are very reliable and fast at house training. They are fastidiously clean dogs, and have a high aversion (bordering on horror) to fouling inside the house or kennel/run if kept outdoors. My bitch learnt where her designated indoor toileting area was and used it without fail within 12 hours of arriving home at 9 weeks of age. We only needed to maintain the indoor toilet area for about a month during training her to going outdoors. She was rock solid after that time at only toileting outdoors.
