This was a fantastic video - well thought out, providing your specific recommendations, while still allowing everyone to consider their own use of the chatterbait. I can’t wait to see more of these type of videos on other baits. Subscribed based on this series - keep them coming!

Love it!! You mentioned us poor saps who only like to fish with 2-3 rods. A great video idea would be to identify all of the possible baits (there's like 20+) and maybe identify 3 rod/reel combos that could handle all of the various styles of baits. Obviously, those rods wouldn't handle them all perfectly, but it would at least allow it to throw with some success.

The main thing I fought myself back and forth on with chatterbait fishing was line. I found straight flouro was best when fishing grass because of the delay coming out of the grass when popping it to get a reaction bite the fish had a chance to eat it(and more stealth) vs braid to leader. Had a glass rod and like the sensitivity of the graphite but personal preference

I absolutely dig the amount of options you guys give, great video. I totally understand the moderate action aspect of a chatter bait. I've tried a spinnerbait rod and it's just too stiff, provides way too much feedback, and doesn't allow them to inhale it. However, I'm one of those guys that can't get down with the glass. My rod of choice is the avid x MH fast. It's a fast with a softer tip that I like for my jigs, not stiff as a board like some fast actions. If you guys haven't tried it you might be pleasantly surprised.

Usually has a few different techniques on each rod that its designed for. They make really nice rods as well. I pair mine with Shimano. I started out with Lews but have been changing.

St. Croix Legend glass is my chatter bait rod. When I first started the chatter bait, I thought I needed a jig type rod. Didn’t take long to figure out that didn’t work. Lost bunches of fish. Finally figured out a slower action was needed. A more “dead” stick is better, so the fish loads up before you feel it.

I'm curious how certain crankbait rods(very small percentage) actually soak up or or displace all the pressure that usually transfers to the wrist, forearm, hands, and fingers during the retrieve. You can throw it on a Graphite MH or Heavy fast action rod too. Just use monofilament or a fluorocarbon that has some stretch like invisx. Todd Auten got 2nd in the Bassmaster classic this year throwing a Jackhammer on the same rod he uses for flipping jigs. He just used mono with the jackhammer to accomplish the same thing as that moderate fiberglass rod does.

I mainly fish Chatterbaits. Have tons of glass, composite, and graphite rods for my Chatterbaits. If you fish high heavy grass waters. Look into the 7'3 MH Duckett Silverado. It's over rated in its power. It fishes like a MH-Mod Rod. I have found its great for ripping out of grass easy and yet the parabolic bend is great for pining fish. Wasn't meant for it but works so well fishing through grass without having that ton of spongy feeling trying to clear the bait free of grass. Cheaper, well built, light weight. 14lbs Sunline FC Sniper, 6.3.1 reel

Thank you for another well presented, not so straight forward area. Where I get confused is throwing dense vegetation (milfoil) into the mix. So with a glass rod you've got the benefits of a nice load on the cast and keeping the bass pinned back to the boat, then into the boat. But working the bait through dense grass with a softer tip seems counterproductive to ripping through and out of the grass (& triggering strikes) in a crisp manner, that it would seem a fast action would do better than the softer action. So, in order to counterbalance, would it then make sense to fish braid (either direct or to FC leader in clear water up north), having the effect of speeding up that softness some for purpose of cleaner ripping from the grass? I'd appreciate your brief analysis.

The 7'2" Fenwick HMG Medium mod fast comes in at like 100 bucks and is an excellent budget chatterbait rod, it's full graphite so it's lighter but being a M it has a deeper bend and it's still rated to 1 oz. (It'll throw 1.5 oz no problem) It's an excellent option for anyone on a tighter budget. Sixgill fishing also has the chopper series rods which are a composite technique specific blank and they're absolutely phenomenal at about $160. Also, don't forget you can always run mono or copoly line for even more absorption.

what a great vid. i've used the 13fishing muse black rod which is a 6'10" medium for so long. it's lighter than the adrena 6'10" glass. i get away with throwing 1/2oz setups on it but mostly throw 3/8oz. but, i've got to say that 6'10" adrena is a winner for me. i've wanted to give the 7'4" 2oz adrena a shot. the train of thought for me is to have a sub 7 for accuracy and a 7+ for bombing and deeper chatter fishing. regardless, great vid that really does cover it all for chatterbaits.

I’ve been fishing with a spinning reel and rod, medium heavy with 15lbs line both high quality rod and reel. Was wondering if switching to a casting reel and rod will be more of the right approach for the chatterbait, jerk bait. Or can I still fish with the spinning rod?

I'm a great mega bass fan, but on chatterbaits, I elected the St Croix legend glass rod..7'4 heavy..Great rod for chatterbaits..The rod is paired up with a Diawa Steez 6:31 for power and control..

I throw bladed jigs a lot, like A LOT A LOT. When I first started using them however many years ago, I didn't think the rod really mattered. They seemed to work on Heavy, Medium Heavy, Medium, Medium Light powers, ExtraFast, Fast, ModFast, Moderate, or even Slow actions. I was dead wrong. The rod makes an incredible difference. A few years ago I got a spinnerbait rod that I loved. I recommended this rod to all my buddies, a few of them actually listened, used them and loved them as well. I thought I had finally figured it out. This year, admittedly on impulse, I picked up one of the Evergreen Combat Sticks. Only NOW do I really have it figured out. That rod is just perfect for throwing bladed jigs. Of course that should come as no surprise as Brett Hite helped design it. Really my only complaint is the lack of hook keeper, but that is easily remedied with a Cal Coast Cali Clip. The black clip matches perfectly, you'd hardly notice it being there. Great rundown of all the options, Ben, you really explain everything well.

The right rod for any technique really depends on many variables. Right rod for you most likely is not the right rod for someone else. Unless you listen to a lot of KZread pros these days who undoubtedly preach there is a right and wrong way to do things. (Because they heard it from someone) What kinda line you throwing? Leader? How heavy is the chatterbait? Hook diameter? Smallmouth? Largemouth? Muscle memory on hookset? Drag setting preference? Short skips or long casts? Open water? Heavy cover? With some of those variables presented, the "right" rod can vary greatly from person to person. "You want the right rod so there is the right amount of tip, enough to keep the fish pinned, and enough backbone to get them in" ...yes. correct. And that depends on the person. But this "right and wrong" trend is great for sales!

Thoughts on p5 madbull? How would braid effect your choice for Chatterbait rod? Sometimes if im fishing chatterbait through heavy grass i like to use braid, thought the madbull may be good for this and heavier topwater like a whopper plopper.

Unbelievable vid. The Rod we use is, in my opinion much more important than the reel. Thank you for the education. Those rods would be really nice to have but about $50-75 too much for a family man who still fishes 3-5 times a week. I love the channel tho...

Now in regards to the Darksleeper Rod, since it designed as a bottom contact rod with a fast action, do you think this rod could double as a spinner bait rod as well?since it was designed for a small swim bait?

That. Evergreen Combat stick is just like you said a little chunky in weight but that glass rod keeps the large jaws hooked till you land em. I’ll sacrifice a little comfort if it keeps catching me them greenbacks 🙌🏽

Ben, On the Shimano Expride MH Glass rod, you mentioned it won’t handle the heavier 3/4oz and up chatter baits, but I have one and it’s rated for up to 1-1/4oz. baits but mine does say it’s a composite glass rod. Are we still talking about the same rod?

  • @thehookuptackle_usa

Wild Bunch is amazing for multi purpose, but it’s not a great chatterbait/Reaction rod. It’s more of a soft plastics/spinnerbait/frog/small Swimbait rod. What you’ll want to look for in a multi purpose reaction rod to compliment your Wild Bunch, is something with a regular taper (bends through the middle) in a MH ish power.

I like the expride 7M glass rod for chatterbaits, and well as cranks up to about a DT-6..The 72MH glass is more of a buzzbait rod to me, a little stiff for chatterbaits
