Choosing my racing shoe for Innsbruck | Altra Superior, Timp, Lone Peak 7, Olympus 5, or Mont Blanc?

As I prepare for my upcoming 67-kilometer Ultra in the mountains of Innsbruck, I discuss my training plan, which needed to be modified due to illness, and the decision-making process for choosing the right pair of shoes for the race. I am considering the Altra Superior 6, Timp 3, Timp 4, Lone Peak 7, Olympus 5, and Mont Blanc. The video also mentions the Training Essentials for Ultrarunning audiobook by Jason koop, which offers valuable insights into training techniques.
This video contains one or more pairs of running shoes that were sent to me for testing and reviewing purposes. I am not being paid to say anything in my videos or community posts. As always, reviews and opinions expressed in my videos are 100% authentic and honest.

Hey Timothy! I enjoyed hearing about your training and shoe choices for the Innsbruck race. Your decision to modify your training schedule to include intervals of decreasing intensity makes a lot of sense, especially for a long-distance race like this. It's also helpful to hear your thoughts on the different shoe options you have, and I appreciate your honesty about the shoes you received for testing and review. Best of luck with your training and race! PS: I'd choose the Olympus. Cheers!

I’m doing a fairly non-technical 100k in July and am going for the Timp 4. As much as I love my Lone Peaks, anything over 50k I think I’m going to want a bit of extra cushion. And other than slick mud, the Timp 4 has dealt with everything I’ve thrown at it.

Great content man. I can't get hold of every Altra model i want here in Norway, but i'm waiting for a pair of Altra Torin 5 i found for 80$. I plan to use them for my regular 25 km gravel and tarmac route. I hope they will be good, fingers crossed. Good luck with your race!

@@TDMiller I've been trying them out now for a few days. I really like them. On my feets compared to lonepeaks 6, they are a bit more snug fitting around the midfoot which is not a bad thing at all. I can understand the tongue could be an issue for some people. It didn't bother me, but i do need a few second extra when putting them on to adjust them properly. The ride is great and the wide toebox is heaven to me. At this point i don't think i could go wrong with any Altra model.

If I’m only racing myself I always go for the Olympus, 4’s in my case at the mo which I stocked up on when they were cheap. I cut of the heel rudder, drives me nuts, and seems to help my foot placement the downhills.

I know your not a pro racer but such a big race you should Ask Altra to send you a new pair MB so you get that new nice bounce 😁🤙 Maybe that new white color or something 🎉 I agree about the LP7 grip…imo its pure magic! 😍 For me its like night and day compare to the old

May 20th I'll be using the superiors for a 50 mile trail race. Going uphill is easier with less cushion and I land softer downhill in them

Mont Blanc seems like the most fun, especially for the special occasion. You could treat yourself to the new boa version to save for race day and do a review of it afterwards, while doing training mileage in the old version to squeeze a bit more life from it 👍

TD I dont know if its just me (and I know its kind of ridiculous to make such a statement under an Altra related video - sorry for that) but I wouldn't wear any of these shoes in the mountains even though you mentioned its not expected to be very technical. imho the grip and protection just can't compete with some trail shoes from other brands especially downhill. beeing a barefoot style and zero drop fan myself I really struggle with Altra when it comes to alpine terrain because I kind of want to like them for this as well. have not tried the olympus yet but would probably prefere them over the other models. PS: if you once experienced the grip of LaSportiva on rocks you will notice Altras are probably built for moderate hilly US west coast trails

You're probably right, and I'm probably too deep into the Altra rabbit hole to even dare try out another brand. I saw so many wear La Sportiva in Italy during my race there last summer. Even the Altra rep at the race expo wasn't recommending the Mont Blanc for the race 🙈

Hey TD, Nice video and thanks for all the great reviews. Way of topic but Im i HUGE Escalante 3 fan for the roads, Considering the Escalante, witch shoes would you translate it to for the trails ? Im looking in to the superior 5 or LP 7. Planing races up 30-40km and original footshape I'm leaning LP 7 got some other recommendations ?

You're right about either the Sup or LP. I would also lean towards the LP, although the Superior is also great. I tend to use them strategically as a strength workout for my feet and lower legs.

I've just started with Altra. So far I have a pair of Torin 5. It helps with my with big toe pain at my right feet. So I think about purchasing Altra Olympus 5 for my peak(dream) race around Matterhorn this summer. They're two negatives: weight and durability. In my size 47 I expect weight 400g for each and I doubts if I can make my expected 400km racing plus 600km training kilometers as I get from North Face and Inov-8 shoes. Hi from Czechia

It took me a while to get used to the weight and bulkiness of the Olympus, but now it's one of my favourite long distance trail running shoes. As for durability, I'm at 250km and they're still looking good 😊👌

How is the midfoot on Ol5 and MB? In many videos I have observed that peoples feet tend to splay out over the midfoot edge on the MB but not on the OL5?

  • @TDMiller

    @TDMiller

    Жыл бұрын

I never had such an issue with that. The upper of the MB is extremely elastic, so I would not be surprised it shows more bulging over the edge. Ollie is quite noticably wider.

@@TDMiller if you watch ginger runner and move more now, you can see the midfoot splaying over the midfoot. It is the same for the LP. I have the same problem, only the OL5 fits my foot. Now I started to run in Vibram Fivefingers, very hard for the feet and calves. But they are much wider and has the shape of my foot.

I would be cautious with the Olympus 5. I had it, and after 120km the outer part of the outsole came off. It might not be an issue if you do not run on technical terrain.
