My sister and I “made” a cake something like this about 60 years ago. I could read and she couldn’t so we were something like 6 and 4. I think all we did was take all the ingredients and threw them in a cake pan. My saintly mother came home and gave I a stir and baked it for us. (We weren’t allowed to turn the oven on.) It came out more like a brownie than a cake - I think we forgot the baking soda - but it was the best cake ever! (To us.) My mom said we somehow used every bowl in the kitchen.

Just tried this today. Simply amazing! Moist melt in your mouth delicious! Has a rich chocolate flavor. The only thing I did different is add a cup of freshly brewed coffee instead of water to enhance the chocolate flavor.
I made this cake; it was amazing! I tweaked it a bit by adding 1/2 cup of flour dusted dried raspberries, currants, strawberries into the batter, then topped the cake with chopped roasted walnuts, after frosting! I also brushed the cake with 1/4 cup of 'Chambord' raspberry brandy, before frosting. It was my take of a Black Forrest Cake!

This is my go to recipe for chocolate cake. I use Guinness beer in place of the water and I add the warm chocolate mixture to the eggs and then the dry but it looks like either order works fine. This cake is so moist, rich and the beer makes the chocolate somehow more. I also flour my metal bundt pan with cocoa powder instead of flour. Doesn't need frosting.
I think I cried a little while watching this masterpiece being created. Bravo!
I have made a cake similar to this in the past, the only difference being instead of water, I add coffee. It really takes it to the next level, without adding any difficulty to the recipe! Thanks for the gorgeous video, as always :)
I really love the texture of this cake. I don't have a bundt pan, so I usually make it in a regular 9" round cake tin or cupcakes. I top it with a nutella sour cream ganache--BEST THING EVER

Thanks Chef John, your recipes helped me express the inner Chef in me to my friends and family. 😉 Thanks again!!! ❤
god bless you!!! this was the only chocolate cake we could prepare when I was a kid, back in the 80's in romania. I haven't kept the recipe, and haven't prepared it for decades!! and then, when I wanted to bake it for and with my kids, 8-9 years back, I couldn't remember it. I asked everyone in the family, friends from back then, any romanian I could find - and no one remembered the recipe. I just about gave it up, when surprize-surprize! you again have the recipe!! you are a gift!! thank you!
I made this for a friend and her husband who had done some work for me. They raved about it. The husband repeated several times that "this is the best cake I've ever eaten." They both said it was moist and not too sweet but sweet enough. They LOVED it. It's one of the easiest yet most delicious cakes I've ever tried. Thanks Chef John. This is a sure keeper.

Looks delicious! Also, John, you're hilarious!
This is one of my favorite dessert recipes. It’s so easy but most importantly tastes amazing. I think that bit of acid from the sour cream makes a huge difference in the texture. And I love a bundt cake because it’s a cake I don’t have to decorate. Just smear on that ganache and it will look awesome.
Chef John, you posted a cake recipe on my birthday! How nice of you.
Chef John, I believe the center of a bundt pan is called the tube. Excellent recipe!! I use half butter, half olive oil - and plain yogurt :-)
thanks for the recipe,i'm gonna to make this weekend cause i have family coming in.

Hi, did your cake smell eggy?? Mine did :(
@sn5784
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Priyanka, No it didn’t smell eggy. My shortcut is that I beat eggs , vanilla extract and the sour cream or creme fraiche depending on what I have at the moment together in a bowl before adding it to the other ingredients. That ensures that there is no eggy smell and everything is evenly distributed

We made it, and guys, this is one of the most delicious cakes we have ever eaten. We used way less sugar because the ganache makes it sweet enough. Used less butter too. But the result was perfect. Thanks for the recipe!

@@FaerieDust I just saw your comment. Actually you can feel free to experiment with it. We used the metric system, so I can only refer to that. The recipe says 1 3/4 cup of sugar which is appr. 225 grams, we used 150 grams of it. 1 cup butter is 225 grams, we used around 200. You can play and add less than this but more of sour cream or greek yogurt to keep the cake moist enough.

Hi, would you mind telling if the cake turned out smelling eggy? I did reduce the sugar. Texture etc was spot on. But the eggy smell kind of ruined it :( was wondering if only I had this issue.
@kekszem55

@@priyankasingh-yv3cj Hi, maybe the problem was the quality and/or quantity of the cocoa you used in it? I always use holland cocoa powder since it is high quality and easily accessible here where I live. You should smell the intense cocoa smell even though the sugar is reduced, depending on how much you put in the mixture.
Chef, this really is the best chocolate cake I've ever made. Thank you!
I look forward to this chef's recipes so easy and look so delicious
This cake has become my de facto cake to make, especially when using really good chocolate in the ganache. The creme fraiche in the cake in place of sour cream turned out really well, if anyone was wondering!

I have made this recipe several times. It yields a delicious moist, rich cake. I used this batter for cupcakes as well. Made about 18 cupcakes with this recipe. Chef John, I made this cake (albeit without the Bundt-tower) some time ago and must hand it to you, it is, despite its simplicity, the very best chocolate cake I’ve eaten. I admit to having eaten a bunch of different chocolate cakes in my lifetime and this is still the best. Funny how “simple” can become “the best”!
Let me add my 2 cents. To avoid the baking soda taste in the final product, mix the soda with the sour cream (or yogurt) before adding to the rest of the ingredients. It will start bubbling up and might "boil over" so use a deeper container to do this in.
instructions not clear. hands stuck shoving cake into mouth
