Chocolate Pie
Chocolate Pie
2 1/2 cups sugar
2/3 cup corn starch
6 Tablespoons cocoa
1/8 teaspoon salt
4 cups milk
6 egg yolks
4 Tablespoons butter
2 teaspoons vanilla
Mix, sugar, cornstarch, cocoa, and salt in a large sauce pan. Whisk in about half of the milk to dampen. Add egg yolks, and whisk well. Then stir in the rest of the milk. Cook, stirring constantly, over medium-high heat until thick. Remove from the stove and stir in butter and vanilla until butter is melted. Pour into a baked pie shell. Top with meringue using the recipe below.
MERINGUE:
6 egg whites
3/4 cup sugar
1 Tablespoon corn starch
1/2 teaspoon Cream of Tartar
Begin whipping egg whites with a whisk. In a separate bowl combine sugar and corn starch. Once egg whites are at a soft peak, slowly spoon in sugar one spoonful at a time. Sprinkle in the Cream of Tartar and continue beating to stiff peaks. Spoon onto pie filling, sealing the meringue to the edges of the crust. Bake in 400° oven for eight minutes or until lightly browned. Cool completely before slicing.

Just a tip on saving time to remove lumps from cocoa, cornstarch and sugar: get out your old timey sifter and sift right into your pan. This saves so much time and lump free. Love your recipes. Thank You.

I always sift my cocoa powder with the sugar & corn starch. Helps eliminate any lumps. Also, I like fresh whipped cream on my pie.
Looks delicious. I love how Melissa puts your recipes in description. Wish others would do the same. Thanks for sharing, love your videos.

I just made this pie for my hubby and all he said when he came downstairs to see it cooling was "WHOA!" He licked the spatula clean from the chocolate filling and said he already knows its gonna be amazing! The hardest part of this is gonna be letting it cool completely before cutting into it! Thanks for the awesome recipe!

You can make this into a German chocolate pie by adding shaved chocolate pieces ,chopped pecans , coconut in bottom before adding pie filling. Refrigerate then add fresh whipped cream on top. Just a variation but mybfamily loves it. Yours looks delicious thank you.

Thank you for all your awesome time, energy and recipes. You have found a way to bring all my childhood favorite recipes that have been from my Grandmother's kitchen, into my kitchen. Recipes I never got the chance to get or thought were impossible for me to recreate! Love the cooking classes you give yo all of us. 😊
When I watch you cook it brings back memories when I watched my late Mama cook. It is such a blessing to this almost 70 year old country boy stuck in the city. Thank you for all your recipes.
My elderly neighbor used to make this and she would invite me in for a slice. It was so wonderful! Like a warm hug! 😀❤️❤️❤️ She has a special place in Heaven.

Including the meringue, you put 3-1/4 cups of sugar in that one pie. And six large eggs! Couldn't believe it! One cup of sugar is sufficient for the pie and a couple of tablespoons for the meringue. Two eggs are quite enough.
I so enjoy watching, you and Melissa interacting about the recipes, but you, Tom have a way of making the Video so relaxing, yet informative with tips as well! I am glad I found your Channel. Thank you, and May God bless you and yours
Just like grandma used to make. I’m 80 and always appreciated her pies. Thanks for the memory!
I have been making chocolate and coconut pies for probably 55 years and had my granny show me and then our cafe cooks show me also and never did anyone explain stiff peaks so well! Thank you! I never had trouble getting them but never knew exactly how! We have always made 2 at a time! Via microwave with Pyrex batter bowl Pour out half and add coconut and then cocoa to remaining half! I thought I had commented but maybe not! Microwave 4 min, stir 3 more min stir and 1 min more! Normally ready at this time! Top with meringue and sprinkle coconut on top of the one with coconut! My fav is coconut but my family loves chocolate!
I used to make this a lot some time ago, then for some unknown reason I stopped. And guess what, when I was craving this pie, I had lost my recipe. I searched all of my cookbooks and online to no avail. The recipes were similar but not THE ONE! I don't know how I stumbled upon your channel, but it was providence because, low and behold, you were making THE pie! Thank you. I love your channel and your instruction technique. This is the recipe I have been looking for. This will be my go to for chocolate pie from now on.
This brings back fond memories of Mommy. She wouldn't do anything as fancy as your scrumtious looking pie. She'd cook a box jello pudding and milk on the stove, pour them into premade crusts she baked beforehand and heap cool whip on top instead of your delectable meringe lol. it was chilled and eaten cold and she called them chocolate cream pie . It wasn't fancy but it was Momma :) Thanks for stirring memories of Her and thanks for all of your great recipes.

That is exactly what I have done for years! My husband is very allergic to milk so I have to use a milk substitute. I use a chocolate graham cracker crust though and add chocolate chips to topping. Thankfully milk substitute options have improved so I’m slowly trying new recipes. Ty for posting this great recipe! I also make a butterscotch pudding pie the same way that the whole family insists on having at Thanksgiving and Christmas!

My mother's family had a chocolate pie recipe somewhat similar to yours. I loved that pie. Watching this video brought back happy memories. This pie is a chocolate custard pie because of the milk and eggs. A cream pie is usually refrigerated. I want to give this recipe a try. It sounds rich and creamy.

I have made this pie recipe for a long time my mother bless her soul taught all her girls how to make this pie we always had it all the holidays my son has to have it every Christmas it is a family tradition so it ends up on the table just for him ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I absolutely will! Thank you for the cornstarch ideas! The first one (for a customer) I didn’t have a good feeling about, so I made yours. I bake for a selective group. Keep up good work! Today, two lemon ice box pies and 3 chocolate!
Kentuckian here…this is close to the recipe from my great granny. She always made it in her iron skillet. I’m 55 now so I’ve been the keeper of the pie recipe. Your recipe seems a lot easier so I’m going to give it a try! Love granny but a good chocolate pie is worth a change. I think she’s forgive me😂
