Chlorate Cell at home

Ғылым және технология

Chlorate cell. Titanium + platinum anode and titanium cathode. Current up to 80 amps/ formation of hypochlorite then chlorate. Gross reaction as: NaCl +3H²O-- NaClO3 + 3H² Definitely the way to go. Theoretically 500 amp hours to produce 1 kg of Sodium Chlorate easily converted to Potassium Chlorate by ion exchange with 750 g of Potassium Chloride. Very low solubility of KClO3 in cold water makes recovery relatively easy by precipitation.

How much salt did you have to use to produce 1kg of sodium chlorate?

Can't remember, that was quite empirical.

uhhhh 12V thats a tad bit too high!! and 80 amps but whats your total anode surface area. these things shouldnt be run above 200ma/cm^2 for pH buffered/controlled cells. and should not be run above 150ma/cm^2 for non pH controlled cells. also electrode distance is a little far which leads to loss of product and reduced efficiency. I hope those electrodes are still alive!!

You are probably right, however my anodes are still perfect. Titanium plated with platinum. The cahodes are probably SS.

@@Frogmobile52 surprisingly they held up despite the conditions. how many times did you run it IE how many hours was it in the cell. because if you onlyudid like 10 runs with like 3 day runtimes then it would be fine. but longer usage like 30 runs maybe not.

@@CatboyChemicalSociety Donno! Done only less than 10h.. I find reducing sodium hypo just as easy and when I have 1 kg of KClO3 it lasts me a long time (primers for percussion pistols and guns and also some "boosted" black powder)

@@Frogmobile52 well my cells make about 500g of chlorate per day running 32 amps. I only have to run it for 2-3 days every few months

Direct 12v from the battery bank, massive 80 amps! Cannot sustain for too long unfortunately..
