IRL Steam railroader here. Couple of things: The signals on the towers that were not one on top of the other shows signals for diverging tracks. If one of them is green, then you can continue. The reason firebox door must be closed when inside a tunnel is because the pressure of the steam exhausting out the smokestack can be reversed inside a tunnel so it will literally BLOW THE FIRE IN YOUR FACE.

Tips for firing a steam loco: Never have the regulator, the injectors and the firebox open at the same time as your pressure will drop drastically. This is due to cold water flowing into the boiler when the injectors are on, reducing the pressure a little. Cold air entering the firebox and cooling down the fire, again, reducing the pressure. And obviously, the regulator uses steam too.

This illustrates how there was and is a lot of skill in driving one of these trains for real.

You are correct about the regulator Sam, the regulator regulates the amount of steam that is allowed to enter the cylinder. On railway Locomotives the regulator mechanism itself is located in the dome on top of the boiler. This is different on other types of engine, on a road engine for example you have a cylinder block which is part of the boiler, and the regulator is located inside the cylinder block.

Yayy virtual trains, pretty good job i guess, i never played it myself but its amusing to watch how Sam's trying to relate how chaotic his plays were.

Hey sam! Nice to see you and Chloe playing train sim and someone new learning how to drive a steam loco in a very basic form, it was very enjoyable to watch. In regerds to your comment about Nottingham's old Railway Network at 21:30, One of the books that may be of interest to you is titled "The Great Central - then and now - Mac Hawkins" I picked it up from the Severn Valley a month ago and it goes into detail about the Great Central Railway and what remains of it as of the time of writing, it contains some really interesting information that I think you might find useful as it talks about the line through nottingham and the various structures and stations that inhabited the line. I'm unsure where you can pick up a copy but I got mine for £5 and it was well worth it! As always, keep up the entertaining content!

Selflapped basicly means zero change, aka if it is applied at 53% it holds it at the pressure that it was , the percentage distribution seems wierd because it is mainly intened for selflapping(self holding)brakes but these are a constant increase of whatever pressure value you choose, so it applies them over time rather than at once like in modern MU's

You actually did tell us you drove a 9F. You have a 9F in your collection that was the one you drove. I remember you mentioning it in one of your collection videos. Great video Sam!

fyi, Nottingham Victoria is now a shopping centre and the line was axed by Beaching.

theres a mod you can get for train sim that allows you to put google maps in the corner of the screen so you can see the route you are driving in real time, its interesting to see whats changed, particularly the area you`re driving round in this scenario

Great video, Chloe is great fun to watch while driving the steam train. But watch out as she may overtake you after a few tries!

This is helpful for new gamers who want to give this a try too!

This was sooo funny lol! Just a heads up that I saw on Rails of Sheffield that Bachmann have upgraded their 9f. They are out, and I can see they have better cab detail, and more importantly, they have wires running between the loco and tender, and I also saw that it now has a next 18 decoder socket, so it sounds like they have upgraded the chassis! I don’t own one myself, and I don’t think I will buy one, but it could make an interesting video. Worth pointing out that their nearly €200 now though…

Visibly you had another train ´ in the section in front of you. But really Chloe did very well. The first time I did TS, I ripped the coupling off between the loco and the tender off a BigBoy 😢😳

Basford: my Grandparents lived on the Estate on the left hand side of the bridge over Valley Road. Whenever I stayed with them in mid 1960s the noise from the traffic along Valley Road was constant and far greater than any noise from the railway. That may be because the railway viaduct was very high above the houses and any noise from trains would have carried up, not down. How long before Chloe starts beating you on the simulator? 😁

Define 'modern'. Cos it could be argued that 'modern' starts with the introduction of the Ringfield motor by Hornby Dublo in 1957-60 (Google isn't certain on the year). But at that point 3-rail operation was the norm, and 2-rail was the proverbial toy dog yapping round yer ankles.

"Anything you can do, I can do better," sang Chloe cheekily. "I can do anything better than you." "What can you do better than me?" asked Sam, a mock frown on his face. "Drive a virtual steamy," came the laugh-a-lot reply. Sam had to admit he was still a bit rubbish at train simulation, although his driving technique had somewhat improved. Chloe had another test run, and this time she didn't need any help. "Clever clogs," said the young man, "how do you do it?" "For me to know and you to find out," answered the young lady. For half an hour, Chloe happily played train simulation. Her tummy rumbled, screaming for food. "Uh, pizza?" Sam wasn't sure whether Chloe would like the unhealthy food or not. "What topping?" asked Chloe, sniffing a bit suspiciously. "Ham and mushroom," echoed the nervous fellow. "I'm allergic to mushrooms." Chloe spoke up. Sam sliced the pizza in half and took the mushroom pieces off Chloe's slice. After eating and using the bathroom, the pair played train simulation once more. Chloe was more confident, and reacted in disgust as.... "AATCHOO!" sneezed Sam, suffering hay fever. He sneezed all over Chloe's T-shirt, and quickly cleaned her up. He apologised. The young lady laughed. "Use a hanky and cover your face will ya?" she giggled. "I don't want your germs thankyou very much." A new day dawned. Chloe, playing train simulation yet again, succeeded without causing wheelspin. "Yay!" She was very pleased with herself. Sam gave her a surprise kiss on the cheek. "Uh, will you marry me?" he asked, turning pink. "Yes," answered Chloe. "I will. I thought you'd never ask." Roll on wedding day. Onboard a 7-coach-train behind a certain GWR steamy named Lydham Manor, that is. Sweet.
