Chinese Pre-Built PC Review: ZhaoXin CPU + Knock-Off Windows OS, ft. NeoKylin

Ойындар

We're reviewing a pre-built computer bought in China, the THTF TZ561-V3, which features a custom Linux build (NeoKylin) and a ZhaoXin X86 CPU.
Sponsor: Thermaltake Toughram on Amazon (geni.us/YzpA5B)
Watch our ZhaoXin ZX-C+ 4701 CPU review here: • "Trillion Core" Chines...
Our review of the THTF system goes a lot deeper than just talking about the pre-built's component quality and pricing: We deep-dive on Chinese Linux distributions and Windows knock-offs, talking about NeoKylin, Ubuntu Kylin, Linux Kylin, Galaxy Kylin, and the differences between them. We also resurrect the topic of the ZhaoXin CPUs, an x86 CPU made in cooperation with Via and Centaur, cutting AMD and Intel out of the conversation. The THTF system can't be bought in the US, but it's not a particularly good deal in Asia, either. This system is clearly targeted at future government use, as Intel and AMD will soon be barred from the systems in use by officials. Consumers can still buy parts from foreign companies, but the agencies will be unable to do so, and so we see the emergence of ZhaoXin and boxes like the THTF TZ561-V3.

Got to give them; They have the right idea with the NeoKylin / Ubuntu Kylin etc. Make it as windows like user interface as possible at first to minimize learning. Once people get accustomized with it and the backend, they can start slowly changing it. This is what is missing on the linux world, i know i could get tons of people to move to Linux if there was very precisely similar UI to windows available so people don't have to re-learn basic usage at first, just package management / how to install apps would be initially odd and weird. These days for gamers it would be super simple too with steam + proton :)

@@catriona_drummond There are plenty of ways to make Linux look like Windows already though. For example for KDE Plasma there are Windows 10 skins. Personally my first experience with Linux was in school, we were using openSuse, which I later installed on my old laptop to revilatize it and... it was a nightmare. Recently though I got interested in Manjaro, installed it and I've been using it for about a year now exclusively, I was AMAZED how much easier it is to use than Windows is (not saying that Manjaro is the only one that's simple to use, plenty of Linux distros are). Want to install something? Just type in what you are looking for in package manager and everything is downloaded and installed for you, no need to search through websites! Oh, and searching for stuff actually works, so that's nice. Basically unless you absolutely require certain programs that straight up don't work on Linux (like PhotoShop), Linux can offer a smoother experience than Windows

Manjaro had absolutely the smoothest integration of KDE I've ever seen, but it's also by far the least stable distro I've tried. That's including Arch, SUSE Tumbleweed, and Debian Sid; all three of which are true rolling releases unlike manjaro. I'm a lot more curious about how secure it is than about benchmarks honestly. Like, I suspect this was developed specifically with that in mind - they even manufactured a chip without the Management Engine or the Platform Security Processor. What I'm most curious about: - Will it accept a TPM (Trusted Platform Module)? And Which versions? - Does the CPU have any Chinese equivalent of a Management Engine/Platform Security Processor? - How secure are any network interfaces that may be built into the system? - Does it come without wifi functionality? If it does come with wifi capabilities, is that something you can remove? - Same question as before, but about bluetooth - What is the bios like? What security options exist there? - Is it possible to install other operating systems on it? Specifically, what about an OS designed around security? It'd be interesting to see someone try to install qubes on there. Probably wouldn't work though lol.

5:49 That is a GreatWall GW T-200SHA PSU. There is a chance that it will work on 120V with a different fuse. While they don't have this specific model, all of GW's T-series PSU's on their website work on 100-240V. (Note that A and B series and some server ones do not). They do advertise all the various protections, so if you plug it in to 120V the worst that'll happen in that it will blow the input fuse (under load) (since it's expecting half the current and twice the voltage). Their server power supplies that have dual SKU for each voltage range appear to only differ by the input fuse. Since it's outputting less than 50% load, I expect the default fuse to be fine for 120V use. One non-fuse-related reason it might not work at 120V is the max on-time requirements in the MOSFETS in the 12V rail (3.3 and 5v are derived from 12V so no issues there) Note that it will likely get worse efficiency at 120V. If you do a teardown of it, I would like to see the construction.

The funny thing is Kylin isn't even the first Chinese Red Hat derivative designed to ape the appearance of Windows, the entire Kylin series was predated by another CCP-backed Linux OS called, in a rather appropriate irony, Red Flag. Red Flag started development in 1999 by the Chinese Academy of Science and had a couple moments of prominence in the Chinese computing scene, in 2000 many CCP government agencies were told to replace Windows 2000 installations with Red Flag, and in 2008 internet cafes in Nanchang were being ordered to swap to it from Windows XP. Its development kind of fell by the wayside in the latter half of the 2010s, with many people reporting its discontinuation around 2014, although the specifics are a bit less than clear due to the usual pitfalls of finding information on CCP government projects.

Every time Cyrix gets a mention or graphic, I get nostalgic. I use my Cyrix 686 MX T-Shirt as a dust cover for a printer.

(NOTE: POST HAS BEEN EDITED WITH CORRECTION.) ~1000 USD Sounds like China's stuck in the 90s where PCs cost around or even *north* of that. Yeesh. And by that, I am leaning towards whoever decided to make this by scratch... if that is even *really* true. Because that CPU looks like an Athlon XP or Sempron.

It's $1000 USD. At least get the price right. Yes, it's way too much, but you could at least not spread misinformation.

@@GamersNexus My bad. I thought I heard $1,700. It's an honest mistake. I edited the post with that correction.

Almost all desktop CPUs looks like Athlon XP if you remove IHS.
