Chinese Character Expert! Why this American Doctor So Fascinated by Chinese Characters?

In 1999, Sophia Kidd left her hometown in the United States and began to learn Chinese. Later, she got her PhD in ancient Chinese literature at Sichuan University, and even offered courses to teach Chinese classical literature to Chinese students. Her passion for Chinese culture over the years not only makes her an expert in ancient Chinese literature, but she also becomes more and more fascinated by Chinese characters during her research process. What kind of charm makes such an American love Chinese characters so much, and how much exactly does she know about Chinese characters?

Most of the words or characters in the Chinese language evolved from drawings. Each character represents one or more meanings. In the era of typewriters, Chinese lost out to English because it was impossible for any typewriter to print Chinese characters. But technology has greatly helped the Chinese language. We can now type Chinese characters using a simple normal keyboard and print Chinse characters using a normal printer. Furthermore, if you look at the screen of your mobile phone or computer, all apps are mainly represented by icons. It looks like technology is favoring icons and characters instead of alphabetic letters. On the other hand, knowing Chinese may help in grasping science and technology.

"No one's really alone, but exists in a relationship with other characters." What a wonderful way to end this exposition, with a pun on 'character' meaning the writing system but also the people whose culture and identity is so dependent on it, as well as on their relation to other human beings - inside and outside of China. So it is sad that, since this video was made, the number of people in the West studying Chinese language and writing has plummeted. This writing system could help bring the West and China closer together, just as it brought many Asian people together as she says. Sadly, our politicians lack the good will to help encourage such communication.
