    Hi. I know this is going to be a long comment and I do apologise. My 24 year old chin Elmo past away 3 weeks ago 😭😭 (honestly has left such a massive hole in my heart. I miss him every feed time. Or just go past where his cage was 😔) and our youngest chin Timmy didn't live in the same cage but they had their cages close to each other. We tried to integrate them but it didn't work. Timmy has become very withdrawn. Quiet and depressed.. He won't come out for playtime. Barely eating and I'm just worried. Is there anything I can do? Chinchllanotebook

    Did you give him some time with Elmo after he passed away? Normally if they see that they passed away and see the body they tend to accept it a little bit better and grief less. For now just keep monitoring him, to see if he is eating and drinking. If he isn't try to hand feed him, and if that still doesn't work after a while you will have to feed him critical care. Try to spend as much time with his as possible, just petting him in his cage. Give him some new chewing toys and maybe rearange his cage interior (that sometimes distracts them a bit about the situation). Try to take him out for playtime as much as you can, and give him some treats. But understand that this is not an instant fix, he will still be grieving but this will definitally ease the proces for him and maybe for you too. If he starts to get sick take him to the vet for extra care. I hope he will feel a bit better soon. And you too hang in there. I'm sorry for your loss

    Many people overlook the 12 hour day/night cycle. That's a great point you make. Insufficient amounts of light/too much can negatively effect hormonal balances, immune systems and serotonin levels to name a few. It doesn't matter if the animal is diurnal, crepuscular or nocturnal a proper day and night cycle is very important to establish. Merlin sure loves his goji berries! So cute!

    Thanks for this video. I keep my central heat at 68 in the winter. Might go to 69 if it's extremely cold out. My bedroom where my chinchilla says. Also my room has 2 vents so I keep them both closed all the time cuz my room gets really hot fast. But keeping the vents closed I get just enough heat to keep my room temp safe which stays around 67-71 71 max

    I have a 9 month old chinchilla and we keep our thermostat right now in the winter at 62, in the summer we keep it at 72. We live in Arizona so if we ever have power outages were prepared so he doesn’t overheat with a marble cooling stone and metal shelves. Also the bag balm is a great for chinchillas, I use it on mine and the smell is a little funky but he lets us and it really helps his cracked or dry feet! So definitely recommend that! Good tips 👍🏼

    My chinchilla is Tulip, the joy of my life. I find that she doesn't seem to eat as much hay as I would like her to. We use Oxbow...also she has lots of snacks, but sometimes she just wants a raisin..not to many..couples 2 or 3 times a week. Could you do a video on healthy snacks/treats, so I can be sure she only has the best and the healthiest... I'd really like to know. Also, she just got her new 4 story mansion, like yours... she's one happy little girl..thanks. I live all your videos. Thank you Jaye Russo

    5 жыл бұрын

    Lily12145 S Bedding is very important and all small pets need it in their cages. The fleece is a type of bedding on its own and I use that instead of say, traditional bedding like wood shavings or paper or something like that. What bedding is supposed to do is absorb the pee and any water in the car along with give them something to walk and sit on. I have a video called All About Chinchilla Beddings that is very useful, as I talk about what kinds are safe and how to use them. It’s an old video but it still has good information. Hope this helped!😉💕

    That’s really bad. They need light so they can determine when to sleep/ play. They are crepuscular animals so most active at dawn and dusk. How is their circadian rhythm supposed to function properly if their is no light to trigger it? Also, is there airflow down there?

    Aka Magic that’s the best you can do I guess in that situation. But taking them out and even going up stairs to the window to just give them a little daylight would be extremely beneficial. Like around 5 pm or even early in the morning. I mean we are animals too. If we were kept somewhere without daylight we’d lose our minds and our circadian rhythm would be wack too. Just be careful

    I have two chinchilla’s for a few weeks now, but i got some troubles one of them is really social and we can let him out for playtime en he wil get in his cage by his self. The other one ( they are not together in a cage for now but i want to slowly introducing them to each other) but he is a rescue chin and he is 6 months old. But he is so scared of me, i can’t get close to him and i don’t want to force him, he doesn’t even take treats from me and i can’t let him out to play because it’s impossible to get him back in it’s cage. I hope there’s somebody who can help me out how to tame him. The other chin is just doing fine and really bonding with me. But the rescue is just so scared and it breaks my heart

  • @Boredchinchilla

    @Boredchinchilla

    5 жыл бұрын

    Damaris Woord it might take a VERY long time to win the trust of the rescue chin. I rescued a 5month old male in 2012, and he has only just begun to let me scratch his chin and ears without biting me in the last 6 months. Every day I would offer him a shredded wheat through the bars, then once I thought he was a bit more trusting I would open the door and give him the treat. It has to all be in his own time.

  • @damariswoord8173

    Did you kept him in the cage until he trusted you? He is sitting scared in a corner all day and i just feel so bad for him. But i guess i should not let him play outside until he is okay with me what did you do?

  • @Boredchinchilla

    @Boredchinchilla

    5 жыл бұрын

    Damaris Woord I couldn’t let him out to play even if he wanted to come out (he didn’t). The person I got Ash from let his giant rabbit try to mate with him, so he would hide in the back of his cage because he thought he would be attacked. I put several hideaways in his cage so he could hide, and I didn’t try to touch him until he started coming to the door (which took over a year for him just to come to the door when I opened it to put food in). I talked to him all the time and I would offer him a shredded wheat daily- first he ignored it, then he came to the door and dashed off as soon as he got it. Then one day I opened the door and he stayed there and waited for his treat. I would put my hand out for him to sniff, but if they are very anxious be careful because he may bite. I still have nerve damage in my thumb from Ash biting me when I put my hand too far into his cage (it’s his territory and he needs to feel safe in there) Be patient and calm, and just keep at it. Eventually you will win him over- how much depends on how much he can learn to trust you. I did buy mine a saucer so he could get exercise, and that seemed to help a lot with calming him down.

He can be sweet sometimes but most of the times he is pretty mean. Can you give me a suggestion?!? I really want to grow a strong bond with him and I want him to feel comfortable with me. (When I first got him I didn't give him time to settle in...is that's what causing him to be distant and angry towards me?). Also he eats but he is light. Help me please. And sometimes his poos are gross and smushy. I tell my mom this but she says he is fine but I don't think so.

    Chinchillas are all very light so unless you see him losing fur over malnutrition he should be fine. Also sometimes chinchillas will have mushy poops and that's okay as long as it's not all the time. As far as getting him to stop being so aggressive, maybe try giving him space and not trying to touch him or be near him when you put your hand in the cage for at least a week. I don't know if that will help but maybe try it because I know when Merlin went through an aggressive phase with me, when I stopped giving him any interaction for a week he got over being so agresscue. Maybe they'll work😊

    My chinchilla use to be more aggressive towards me and I also stopped giving him a lot of physical attention. I instead let him come to me a lot and he eventually got use to me picking him up. Not all chinchillas like to be pet though because they are prey species so they will always have that instinct

    oHiDoThAt you need to take him to the vet if your chin has diarrhea, only feed hay and pellets for a week until his poo hardens it should never really be mushy. It should look the same way it goes in as out. Consistent in size and pretty hard. Make sure they are eating and drinking regularly and playing regularly and if it doesn’t get better in two days, take him to the vet! Chins can deteriorate quickly so it better safe than sorry. They can do a fecal analysis if need be to make sure it’s not a parasite.

    Kelli the Gymnast16 I think I mentioned that I have a video called How To Disinfect Rocks For Small Pets where I talk more in depth about rocks. But basically just choose one that is decently stable and not too round and smooth with no sharp edges. Then disinfect it, obviously. And for tile, I don’t think it really matters which type you get😊

    That would get really cold for the people and even the chins themselves, if they were raised in a hotter environment. I keep my chins at 72 degrees and i've never had temperature-related problems with them!
