Scholarly Article Suggests Subterranean Tunnels Beneath Three Man-Made Islands in the Contested Spratly Archipelago to Alleviate Overcrowding. Researchers from China’s Ocean University Assert They’ve Surmounted Coral Sand Excavation Challenges with Innovative Techniques.
China’s Artificial Islands in the South China Sea Could Alleviate Overcrowding with Tunnels, Suggests Chinese Ocean Engineering Team. They Claim to Have Devised an Excavation Technique to Surmount the Challenges of Soft Coral Sand. Following a swift expansion in the disputed Spratly reef chain over the past decade, China has recently scaled back construction to placate neighboring countries. The artificial islands, particularly the three largest - Meiji (Mischief), Yongshu (Fiery Cross), and Zhubi (Subi) - hold substantial military and economic value for China, forming a triangular defense against US bases in the Philippines. However, the facilities on the islands are struggling to keep pace with China’s burgeoning economic and military might, leading to overcrowding, as per the research team from the Ocean University of China, led by Chen Xuguang. The researchers, in a peer-reviewed paper published in April by the university’s journal, stated, “As the islands or reefs’ required functions increase, more personnel are stationed on them, leading to a shortage of living facilities.” China has transformed seven reefs in the Spratlys into artificial islands as part of its expansion strategy, using a unique process that extracts coral from the reef’s core, pulverizes it, and piles it up to create a ring of artificial land, meters above sea level.

This is a fantastic idea and probably the world's biggest undersea tunnel ever built in human history. If China succeeded, this will put a lot of pressure to the US navy and the Philippines. Is China going to build this tunnel as suggested by the scientists? What are the challenges that you think China will face with this monolithic project? Please share your thoughts down in the comment below. Thank you for watching!

If this is built, US navy and the Philippines will be extremely worried.

China will build this because this is a strategic location and to fend off any intrusion directed from the Philippines.
