As the Winter Olympics takes place in Beijing, visiting athletes have been warned not to speak out against China’s human rights abuses.
From Ecuador to Uganda, China’s surveillance technology has gone global.
In this episode of System Error, we examine how these new tools have made spying easier for both dictatorships and democracies.

I think if ur home remains your sanctuary then anything else is like this then I think it's fine for example in Australia u are allowed to be racist in the privacy of your home but u cant in public. Alot of crimes have been discovered and perpetrators arrested, an interesting example in the UK a man was found to be stabbing cats and was caught on camera a horrible crime in itself what if it had escalated and he decided it was time to kill people? the biggest issue in my experience is the huge amounts of data that has to be crawled through by an analyst so its reactive rather than proactive in terms of finding criminal activity. The con would be is the government uses it against you or trys to discredit you and that happens a lot in any government form. The question is does the good outweigh the bad? I think it does to a degree.

Yep. Funny enough I was explaining this to my classmates when I was 14. I'm really dumb in many aspects but that was something I understood really well early on. It came from my way of thinking about the world where I wonder why things are how they are and why things are where they are. I'd look at surveillance cameras and wonder who was on the other side looking at me. I was in my freshman year of highschool at the time. The early web was really cool because the only incentive people had to put information on there was be nerdy and share it. So.. I could trust a lot of things about the world. I knew 2008 was coming in 2006. That was a really bizarre experience. I of course knew all about the NSA. I remember the very day 9/11 happened. What did except all this would come to?

I was based in the UAE around 2010 and filmed many closed-door meetings for HUAWEI during that time. It was all about future (which is now) government-level surveillance technologies. There were often delegates from the Middle East and African countries attending those meetings. They were demonstrating technologies like VPN tracing, face recognition, biometric data analysis. I had to stop working with them after realizing what was all that about. It's chilling to see many of those have become reality now.

My bosses at my work record all of their employees conversations and activities during all hours. They use this to discipline their employees and find out if people are sharing discontented views on the place I work for. I've seen my coworkers reprimanded for precieved issues that they have been recorded doing and saying when no managers are in the building. One of my coworkers who works with children was reprimanded for not doing her job when in actuality she was just not in view of the cameras when she took the children outside for activities which is a completely normal thing for her to do in her job. Theres a certain Orwellian feeling everytime I enter work even when I am not on the clock. Furthermore, the utter incompetence of the people using the cameras to spy on their employees is very concerning. The truth of the matter is that a lot of the employees are disgruntled with their employers and share those opinions when taking breaks and this has been my experience with every job I've ever had. The difference is is that they are listening. Its oppressive and should be illegal. They are not the government but it is still a violation of our right to free speech. "Oh you dont like it , quit."? Well, most of us need our jobs and are barely hanging on as it is and have no other options as we live in a small town. If you read this and support what I'm saying give a like and tell me how I can get this to stop. I'm thinking full staff walkout in full view of the surveillance equipment.

If only we could unionize.. most of the people who work there are just out of high school and college And those that aren't like myself are too afraid to lose their jobs to take action. The history of making complaints at my work is that if you step up you get manipulated in to thinking you're in the wrong, ignored, or treated poorly for challenging authority. I've even been talked to rudely and treated like a truant child for having to take a sick day due to a serious medical condition I have been battling with for years. This was followed by workplace gossip started by my own boss to make me look disingenuous. Furthermore, my coworker has repeatedly been told that her job is "not really that important" and that they are "really doing you a favor" by letting her keep her position. She goes around every day at work at her wits end hoping that they do not decide to fire her. I've told her that they were probably just trying to mess with her head but she is young and doesnt understand how manipulative employers can be to their employees. They do all this and watch our every move making it any extremely oppressive place to work where everyone fears that they will lose their jobs or have their private lives and conversations become public knowledge. I have talked to my boss about my medical condition only to find out the next day the WHOLE STAFF knew every detail of that very private conversation that was made clear to the listener that is was VERY PRIVATE. I'm scared that if my medical condition prevents me from working I will be fired or have my reputation ruined as it is (as I have sai d) a small town and most everyone knows each other.

I would entirely leave the property to make any personal phone calls. They would watch the video feed obsessively to the point they would call the office when they were out of the country to complain about something they saw when in reality they often had no true reason for concern.

I am not naive about the surveillance society China is developing at the expense of its own citizens but I think the Western democracies are doing the same, sometimes in a more subtle manner, but sometimes not so ; just think about the many restrictions and controls governments have brought in, in the name of the pandemic...

While this is nice in theory, it's not realistic. What happens when the countries that sign decide to break that treaty? What are the consequences? Nothing. Trade/ economic sanctions? Doesn't work when it's major powers like the US or China. Many countries are reliant on them for trade. Many countries which are part of the UN have already broken plenty of human rights agreements. Nothing happens. It's all for show.

I truly think that boycotting China will be so beneficial in the long term. In the run up to the CCP’s 100 year anniversary in less than 30 years, China WILL stretch their tentacles across the globe at an unprecedented rate, and so called free nations WILL follow suit. If we boycott now and stop our reliance on their cheap labour and technology we can ultimately benefit ourselves by keeping manufacturing in country and remain sovereign. I dislike Trump, but he was spot of with regards to Huawei’s 5G use in the west. They want to monitor us. From a country which imprisons and abuses their citizens based on their religion, would you really expect anything else?

You do realize that the economy of the west relies on the cheap labor available in the east? Do you truly think that the big corporations will allow such stuff? The gaming and movie industry are China's bitches already. 90%+ of the world's medical supplies are produced in China, and probably a massive % of the technical stuff, too. China is also the only (or the dominant) country that refines rare earth minerals, which are needed for our tech. China is doing some pretty bad stuff, but some of it is already done by western countries, just not as openly. China is just a part of a global problem. Anyways, the world is too dependent on China atm. They know it, we know it, so nothing will change without a super event.

If you ask why, the answer is quite simple. Actions have consequences. Look at america, shoving the elderly, pushing down people to subway tracks, stolen goods from cargo train, metal detectors in your schools, robbery (even stealing catalytic converters - what?) and unruly passengers in the past 2 years… in china if you’re involved in unruly behaviors like sitting on others on the train and refuse to move, or if you’re driving recklessly or if you’re defecating in public, that’s a menace to society, it will be difficult to get loan or you will be banned from flying. Whats so wrong about that? The most basic human rights for all chinese (including ever growing minorities such as uighur) is freedom from fear. Fear of getting robbed or of dying of covid for example.

I'm specifically talking about the paranoia considering China's social credit score. I never said our societies were the same, I was simply stating how my society in Canada has many ways people are held accountable to a form of 'social credit score'. Here's a few more examples: => car insurance is required to drive a vehicle. The vehicle is required to have a VIN number. The cars owner is tracked at all times, and that owner is responsible for any accident. Your insurance rates go up if you have accidents. (Sounds like a capitalist social credit score) => When you start a job, you must give them your Social insurance number. This will track your employment history, Canadian pension plan, etc. You must have this to work. If you make more money in a lifetime, you are deemed to have a better retirement. => When you travel internationally you have a passport. This passport expires every few years. Unless you make the effort to renew (ie good social standing) than it expires. * I can honestly think of many example... And this is just for fun. I don't mean to get people upset. I am simply thinking outloud to the KZread comment thread for fun. If you aren't having fun, don't worry about it. 🖖 PS I never said that China's behaviour was justified in any way.

I was in Xinjiang in 2016 and then again in 2017. In the space of a year Urumqi changed so so much. The second time I was there, all foreigners were banned from hotels (China often makes sweeping bans on things for periods of time) in the whole province. I managed to find an Airbnb for a week, but on my second day there I was surrounded by about 8 or 9 police in riot gear and after 3 or 4 hours in a police station, send to the airport and asked to leave. The oppression in Xinjiang was so bad and as the CCP ships more of han Chinese in to water down the local culture, it's going to get worse for the locals.

  • @wrux

    @wrux

    2 жыл бұрын

A little more context. The surveillance is really crazy there. There's small police stations on every street corner. There's xray scanners to enter even the smallest of shops. Most of the time, han Chinese do not need to go through the strict security restrictions as the locals. I stayed at a hostel in Turfan and they had riot gear and xray scanners at the entrance. On my first trip to Xinjiang in 2016, I exited the country on the Kazakh border where I met another westener. He had an Android phone and they took special interest in taking his phone to some machine, which I imagine installed spyware on the device. I had an iPhone so didn't get the same treatment, presumably because there wasn't any exploits to install spyware. The blind nationalism in mainland China is horrific. It's really sad to see han people in Xinjiang justifying the treatment of the locals and just spouting CCP bullshit. When talking about the difficulties there, they would say things like "the local people do not want to adjust to modern Chinese life" and were ignorant to the fact that it's not actually China.
