China's Struggle With Domestic Violence: A Potent Patriarchy | Undercover Asia | CNA Documentary

Nearly a quarter of Chinese women suffered domestic violence at some point in their lives. In a society which still binds women with traditional value, seeking help is not easy, as people tend to dismiss what happens behind closed doors as family matters.
We talk to victims of domestic violence to understand their ordeals, some of them highly educated and successful, while others have turned to violence out of desperation. What goes on in the minds of perpetrators? How does domestic violence affect the children in the picture?

Well said. It seems that many Chinese want some special treatment...like they are adopting a victim mentality for pity and special treatment/laws? People WORLDWIDE need protection and should be treated equally, kindly, fairly, justly. We know that many asian people allow their children to be slave laborers and that is heartbreaking to most people, nationality doesn’t matter.

Yes! Exactly. This is *specifically* about China bc they have their own laws and culture that needs to be addressed in order to better protect domestic violence victims. The way the US (for example) handles DV is obviously going to be different from how they handle it in China. So happy you understand this! I hope Chinese activists are heard loud & clear! Pray all the people in need of help can do so safely.❤

As a Chinese girl, I never imagined that a husband would beat his wife until one day I went to my aunt's house and saw my uncle start beating my aunt because of some issues, I was terrified. Their son stopped his father and began to fight with him.In the end my uncle beat his son's head to bleed, and our whole family ended up going to the hospital. Only after that did I enter the real world that domestic violence can be all around us.I sincerely hope that women's rights and interests can be guaranteed in any country.

No matter how good a husband is only God’s love can fully satisfy our thirst for love but when a husband which has become one with his wife hurt her the wound will be so deep. Violence from a member of family causes such a trauma that only Jesus can heal. Perhaps she can ask for the pouring of His love and protection. No amount of counselling or anti depressant would heal her soul, they’re like band-aids on a broken leg. Unfortunately most women grow up to marry abusive men as well. Parents are the biggest and most important examples a child will ever have. When faced with problems and hardship as an adult, you will unconsciously fall into the same patterns your parents did. For women, their mothers examples of not knowing they're worth, staying to long when it goes badly, blaming themselves, and the insane myth that we can fix these men if we love them enough will repeat through multiple generations. Even in American culture It is echoed in every aspect including the twisted ideals and values of the feminist movements.

I was a student in the capital. I fell in love madly with the boy from the capital. Everything was a fairytale. I am European, he was studying abroad before we met, so cultural differences was not as big. But one day..... The demon came out. I didn't know on what planet I am. No one would help me. I was alone in a foreign (this) country, even the police didn't help. They just film him throwing glass bottles at me and my classmate. Stalking me after I ran away, threatening me in the worst possible ways. I was just a student there, no family... He was and is a monster. He crooked my life. I will never forget the blackness of his eyes when the beating started. The last time when I fell into his trap he even abducted me and his own mother helped him to put me, all beaten up in his apartment (with bars on windows, who was in Beijing knows many of building apartments has bars) and locked me in. I don't know to this day how I escaped him. You cant imagine the details. To this day I feel ashamed. To this day my family doesn't know, cept my brother whom I begged not to tell anyone. I haven't believed in evil before i met him. The irony of it all started from love. My life is crooked since but I am grateful he didn't took my life. I can't imagine what would have happened to my family if he did. To this day im silent, as a foreigner to speak out not in favor of a country that gave me much education and many good moments... You know the game. Nevertheless, domestic violence is maybe the craziest thing ever. The one who loves you, destroys you and brake your bones. I hope things will change one day. One day soon. I will never forget the things he did to me. It felt like living in hell. I would cry out what did I do to deserve this? Why did he marry me if he hates me so much? I just didn't understand..... Eventually I had an opportunity to leave, and took it. I have been with my new husband now almost ten years, and he treats me like a queen! Showers me with love, and attention. Last year, a husband tried to murder his wife on Rosh Hashan's eve. They fought and she tried to leave. He didn't let her. He stabbed her 20 times and hit her more than 100 times with a rolling pin she used for making bread for the holiday. She screamed for him to take their 1-year-old child away to the room - but he insisted to let the child see and hear everything. He knocked out her teeth and broke her eye sockets, skull and arms. He tried to choke her. He even yelled "Why won't you die?!" at her. Their kid sat in the pool of her blood, screaming. A neighbor heard the whole thing at practically had to break in into the apartment to make him stop. The police took 20 minutes to get there. He took the child and locked himself in the bathroom. After he was arrested, it was ALL OVER the news. The entire country was in shock. He asked the judge to give him a gag order because he thought the whole ordeal would "harm his good reputation as an engineer". THE JUDGE OBLIGED. Everyone was so angry, that some hackers took the matter into their hands and published his name. She was in the hospital for 4 months. HE STILL HAD RIGHTS over the child and HE REFUSED to give permissions for the child's medical care. Our government had to make a new law to take away his rights (a man or a woman that was accused of abuse - has his or her parental rights temporarily removed. If convicted, permanently removed). The Jewish religious court gave her a divorce VERY quickly. Usually, it takes years. His excuse for doing what he did? "She insulted me" It took one horrible case, for some laws to finally change. | Sad.

Here in the United States; we are still making steps since the 1970's to not only properly handle cases of domestic abuse on the part of law enforcement agencies and the court system but also better care for those who have experienced abuse. A case that brought about this change was the case of Francine Hughes in Michigan. Francine Hughes was abused for thirteen years from 1964 to 1977 and in March of the latter year Francine fought back against her abusive husband (whose name I refuse to say because he doesn't deserve to be remembered) by pouring gasoline around the bed while he slept and set the bed on fire. Francine was acquitted and she became an advocate for tougher laws concerning domestic abuse at both the state and national levels. She passed away in 2017 after setting up a new life in Alabama.

Honestly this really really hits home. Although I live in the US, my father has always been violent and super abusive to me and my mother. He has a horrible temper and would always loose his mind over very simple things. Whenever he couldn't win a fight verbally with my mom, he would raise his hand and hit her. It would be even worse for me because he has a superiority complex and believes the grown up is always right. Since he sees me as a useless child living off of him, he would be even more violent with me. Even looking at him the wrong way would result in a violent beating, it scares me. After he got into a fight with a coworker at work, he broke his arm and couldn't work for awhile. Since my mom is making the income, he hasn't been violent towards her because he understands that she supports the household. But because of quarantine, living at home with him is like living in hell. I hate it everyday and I often lose myself in my room. This traumatic experience has really affected me and I have developed attachment issues which really keeps me from forming relationships with others around me. Sometimes I just wish my parent had divorced right from the get go, that way I wouldn't be in so much pain everyday. Wow, I didn't even realize I was writing this much, I guess I just got carried away with this video and everything. Writing this comment has helped lift some weight from my shoulders I hope I can be freed from this hellish hole.

I don't care that the enabler was "kind", I don't care that they gave me hugs or kisses - how can you do that yet still allow someone to beat on me? and to break me mentally? like- are you mentally ill??? lmao. The enabler parent ostracized all their family and friends and allowed their abuser to isolate them and now they've isolated me away from them too, because they refuse to leave, they refuse to apologize.

I think domestic violence in China is so much common and violent. Watching this video tears my heart. Domestic violence happens anywhere but not as rampant in China. I guess it is cultural. I'm from the Philippines. We have a strong law called, Anti- Violence Against Women & Children. Men are aware of this, so there is less domestic violence in our country. I remember our Dad never laid hands on our Mom but sometimes when he is annoyed about something he would take it on her verbally. But when our Mom is feed up she would angrily reply. Stories like this make me have so much contempt for men in general. I know that's unfair and I take care not to feel like that. But when I keep hearing all the crime, rape, violence, sexism, catcalls, insults, etc..committed by men (and not to say there aren't horrible women out there); but sometimes, I don't feel so bad when I hear a story of a woman wronging a man, cheating, revenge or whatever--yes, I know my thinking is warped sometimes! Sorry to all the good and normal men out there who mostly outnumber the bad...I don't wish harm on you.

A lot of men have an ego problem, all over the world. Edit: Only editing because I see mansplaining. I am stating a statement that men with ego problem but I didn't elaborate nor fully encompassing reasons on why ego is reason on why a men is hitting women. OFC there's others problems PLUS ego that results in men hitting women. Thousand of years of indoctrination of women being below men in many different cultures has led to men thinking that they are above women. Examples of why it is an ego problem + other social constructs such as when a women rejected/leaves him; earns more than him; or cheating on him etc..it hurts his ego, for which they cannot stand it. Why would a woman that has already left a man still have him coming back to gouge her eyes out? The woman left him and he couldn't take it as it has hurt his ego. OFC there's other reasons + ego problems that leads to violence against women. OFC there's women that hits men as well, but this video is on men hitting women so obviously. Anw I said 'a lot of men', not ALL men.

This is a sexist comment and it lacks insight. The problem is not strongly related to men's' "self-respect" or sense of "self-importance." This is more-so a matter of misguided social reinforcement, a dysfunctional interpretation of cultural traditions, and the continuation of inter-generational trauma.

The issue about marriage is (1) being pressured to get married for the sake of marriage due to the glorified status defined by their culture (2) social media glorifies the happy imagery of marriage which influence people to think everyone should get married in order to be happy! However, there's also a third point, (3) there are videos on the Chinese social media where they even joked about cheating on their partners, and this fuels insecurity in marriages/ relationships, which then results to violence. In summary, it's the culture of glorifying marriage as a definition of success and happiness which forces people to marry quickly for the sake of marriage (blind love) and the lack of maturity about healthy relationship.

Those are often low rank men or perceive themselves as such. For example, a man might feel inferior in comparison to other men because his shorter because of this feeling of inadequacy he exercises control over a weaker object, a female partner. This also happens in "rage transfer". For example, the man gets scolded by his boss at work, because boss has power over him he cannot direct his anger towards the boss so he comes home and kicks the dog and punches his wife, like this he feels back "in control". In countries where DV has been criminalized men became pro psychological and emotional abusive. As for the women, their feelings of inadequacy are often projected onto their children.

However, why would this man agree to do this interview and show his face and name, when public marriage records exist and the woman friends/family or the public could potentially convince her to also come back to him after seeing this. He could have done this with his face blurred, leaving personal details out as she did not consent to have her story plastered all over the internet. I feel somehow this is wrong. Imagine ur past abuser is given a platform and is now "reformed", and ppl everywhere believe him.

13:00 great response by the police: he beat you because he loves you and wants you stay. Of course, when a man loves a woman he wouldn’t kiss and hug her, no, the proper way to express it is by punching her in the face and head and kick her in the stomach repeatedly. If the people who should uphold and enforce the law can’t differentiate between true love and abusive relationship I dread to think about how they deal with the rest. Do the women have to lie dead and decapitated for them to see that it’s not love?

I feel like alot of potentially serious abuse is covered up in Asian families because there's this idea that physical punishments are a normal part of traditional parenting and family hierarchal structure must be respected. The parents, especially the father, is never wrong or should be questioned any under circumstance, doing so is disobedience and reason for punishment. There's also a lack of mental health education and it's highly discouraged to talk about your private family affairs with other people. The Chinese way is very much about minding your own business even if it looks like someone is struggling. I was sadly abused throughout my entire youth by my parents especially my father as a Chinese myself and it went beyond general discipline that I knew some other Chinese kids my age had to go through if they were rowdy or something, my father was an extremely twisted narcissist. He constantly made it known how useless, stupid, and hated I was. He enjoyed causing me physical/emotional pain even if I wasn't doing anything and some of the torment was sexualized. My mother was an enabler who was wasn't there for me and sometimes even participated in abusive acts. They constantly fought during my childhood as well. These issues really need to get addressed more because they're absolutely emotionally crippling to the victims long after they're no longer even in the abusive environment. I hope people speak out about their experiences more and are able to get out and live a happier life.

DV in china isn't limited to spousal abuse, but also towards children. My parents are from 2 of the bigger cities mentioned in this video. Both are well educated (PhDs) and have white collar jobs. My mum physically and emotionally abused me throughout my childhood. This I think was an outlet for her. My dad was a meek man who couldn't object to her manner of raising me. Her determination to control me continued well into my adulthood. Needless to say, there are even fewer avenues for children to seek justice or support when the people who are meant to love and protect them perpetrate violence against them. I could speak to no one. She often justified her behaviour as being a widely accepted normality in China. Violent beatings of children in her mind is the only correct way to enforce parental control and in turn garner respect for one's elders. I fear that this issue is even less likely to be addressed within Chinese society compared to spousal abuse.

Comparing to physical abuse, mental abuse or so-called cold abuse in the marriage is so hard to get an evidence for the court! I saw and heard so many husbands/boyfriends said to their wives “you are useless” “you have no value to the society” etc. I am not sure in this situation, how can the law protect the ones being abused? Sometimes mental abuse causes the equal level of damage or even longer-time damage as the physical abuse!

I'm glad my father didn't inherit my grandpa's bad attitude.. My father never hit my mom ever even if they fight and at the edge of being physical.. My mom is the one hitting my dad and provoke him and worsen the fight instead 😂 but if my father was hit he would just chuckle and laugh

It is a scale of abuse, the worst being physical abuse by the strongest person to the weakest person in a relation. Even verbally putting eachother down in a mean way or using bad language to eachother are forms of abuse. Then there are things like ´stonewalling´, ´gaslighting´, ´passive-agressive´ behaviour, and all kinds of pyschological manipulations that break people´s heart and soul. Since the average man is physically much stronger than the average woman, men should learn to disciplin themselves. Once they start beating girlfriend or wife in a rage (with or without alcohol, drugs etc.) it is too late. It will happen again, and again, and again. It is `normal´ to have conflicts in relationships, but we should learn how to deal with it in a non-abusive way. In contrast we should learn ways to help heal eachother from wounds we bring with us into the relationship. (I am editing when I see typing or language errors).

These women are so brave and they deserve to be love by a real man . A man who will love them , protect them , respect them and even give his life to them . This is the meaning of a real man . He will love his wife , his family and give all that he has and all of himself for them to have the best life possible . This is love between a man and his wife . It is my hope for these women that one day they will find this kind of man to be there love and husband . It is true that they are out there ladies just do not give up and keep looking and you will find true happiness !!!!

Child who living in this kind of family background most likely growing up with lack of love from the family. back then i hated my dad so much, but my love to my mum always 1000000000% will never deplete til now. i hated myself at my young age why i born in this family, and always feel like i don't belong to the family, pillow always wet with tears, stage of depression. i will remember those memories of getting beaten up by my dad as well til my age of 18. those who gone through the same as me, i totally felt you, i hope you are still going through your life strong, but i want to love myself more now.

Domestic abuse is a vicious circle. It is EVERYWHERE on Earth. It's most often generational. The abuse happens to women, children and men. It's bullying in government, domestic locals, within industries, the laws. It is the nature of the beast, our lower selves. Honor God First. Respect, Kindness, Patience, Education, Fairness used consistently WILL make a difference in healing our tortured Souls. It might start with, "I love you. Let us be friends."

I’m shocked that someone even stopped to help. China has a culture of not stepping in to help someone in need because they are either scared that they will get in trouble too or if it’s domestic abuse they think it’s not their place to step in. I’ve seen/read literally dozens of stories about sometime needing help and people just keep walking by.

Good for him but what about the people he hurt? He should not be allowed to remarry. There must he consequences otherwise what stops him from doing it again and others from following in his footsteps? I would put a blinking collar or anklet on any man who commits abuse and domestic violence after he serves a jail sentence (death penalty would be preferred). Shame is the only way to stop this. Or better yet, brand his forehead with 'abuser' ' You don't go so far as to seriously hurt people as a 'mistake.' Weak men. Cowardly men.

A suggestion for those suffering from violence: try to discreetly film them on camera when a fight is about to erupt, and use this as evidence if possible when the police asks for evidence. If they don't believe you, you need to find ways to protect yourself, just like you do when you're harrasses (like mace sprays, self defence moves etc.) But ofcourse, be careful not to let them get back at you for defending yourself in these ways. If things get worse, you need to find a place to stay, like a secret HQ. It will be worth the hassle. Sending prayers to those in sufferring🤲

Thank you so much for voicing out. I remember my great granny told me when she was young and want to go to school. Her mother told her boys are treasure, the girls are stool, what are you going to school for. And she was chased into kitchen to cook breakfast. She never went to school until at 19 when she met her first husband who supported her. When ever uncle did something bad or have accidents, great granny will get blamed and get beaten by her parents. I think the main reason of male chauvinistic so wide in China is because of favour boys over girls. Chinese culture still follow the ancient teachings woman must listen to father, listen to husband, and when son grow up listen to the son. Woman largely have no right in saying. I’m really glad there are many ladies and activists speaking out and seeking women rights. Especially in rural areas. This domestic violence happens across the whole world. But it’s most importantly the survivors comes out and speak about their experiences.
