The Chinese migrants risking it all for the American dream | 101 East Documentary

Traversing Latin America to the US has become a well-worn path for those seeking new lives.
But now would-be migrants are coming from further afield - China.
This year, thousands have already made the trip known as “zouxian” or “the route”.
Their goal: asylum in the US.
Migrants cite a host of reasons for leaving China, from economic uncertainty, to Beijing’s harsh COVID-19 policies, to human rights.
But they can fall prey to human traffickers, corrupt officials, even drug cartels.
Despite the dangers, more and more Chinese are risking it all for the American dream. 101 East investigates.

Thank you for watching this episode of 101 East, which is the first part of an investigation into the 'zouxian' phenomenon, where record numbers of Chinese nationals are taking a dangerous route through Latin America to seek asylum in the US. In the next episode, we explore what happens to Chinese asylum seekers once they reach America and investigate the shadowy industries profiting off them: kzread.info/dash/bejne/omV_k9eOfcKbqbA.html

I met some of these people in Thailand after COVID. There was a small group of Chinese who kept to themselves at our hostel. One day I overheard them in Chinese repeatedly talking about my country Mexico which got me to talk with them. They were quite happy to learn I could speak Chinese but more excited to learn I was from Mexico. They started asking me a bunch of questions about crossing the border into the US to which I bluntly told them I had no idea about and discouraged it. I asked where they got these crazy ideas from and they said that people were posting videos and tutorials of how to cross into the US online. The Chinese government hard handed approach to COVID was what made them leave. They wanted to go both for the freedom and economic benefits but they had a very naive and overly optimistic view of the US. They saw the high wages US workers were making but had no idea as to the incredibly high living costs associated with living there. I tried explaining that there was a housing shortage and that their expectations for life in the US would set them for disappointment but they either didn't believe me or brushed off my criticism. I also tried encouraging them to go to German or Australia instead (places which I feel would be better and easier for them to enter) but they seemed dead set on just going to the US. Unfortunately I don't know where they are now as Wechat is blindly and constantly blocking and deleting accounts in SE Asia without reason🙄.

They will struggle especially if they don't speak English and I'm sure they know that so the fact that they're willing to endure tells you how bad it is for them in China. I think they would have a better understanding than say you, especially when over 600 million still live on $138 dollars a month, high youth unemployment, FDI flowing out, stagnating economy, repressive government, lack of freedom. I do think there is an element of misguidedness to this migration, i think that chinese who flee stand to lose a lot by leaving. They also gain other "freedoms" but ive been wondering what freedom even means. I am mexican and while we can profess religion here freely, i (de facto) do not have the freedom of mobility. I cannot go outside at night by myself because it is unsafe and 11 women daily are murdered in feminicides. Maybe in china you lose some freedoms, but you have others that you take for granted. The federal minimum wage is $7.25. If they manage to make $20 an hour as a fast food worker in California they would end up spending all of that due to high cost of living. After tax they're really only getting paid around 15$ per hour and that's about $2.2k per month. With rent going for around 2k for a small apartment that leave them with about $200 to live on each month. It sounded good until you factor in the expenses and you realized you're living just to work.

Under normal circumstances, various aspects of life in China are not restricted, it's just that censorship of speech and behavior is relatively strict, especially after the pandemic. As long as you don't speak out in government settings or joke among friends, it's fine. Most people here may have been subjected to political persecution or have a strong dislike for the Communist Party. It is also possible that they lack the ability to live in China and have an overly idealistic view of American utopian society.

Even if these immigrants don't have a college degree or skill for labor jobs, they are willing to do whatever work possible (from personal experience working with immigrants). The sort of religious suppression, freedom of speech, fears of safety to the people in China has made no more sense when so many foreigners who have chosen to live in China today suprise the world with their real experiences of how enjoyable, dynamic and safe, harmonious and affordable living the country can provide to its people.
